Sony SCD-DR1 Super Audio CD Player

Sony SCD-DR1 Super Audio CD Player

Sony SCD-DR1 Super Audio CD Player 08/13/2004 11:04 AM

SCD-DR1.jpg imageSony's new "SCD-DR1" Super Audio CD/Audio CD player is apparently the pinnacle of high quality audio playback - or at least we hope so with its $11,000 price tag. Sporting audio interfaces you probably haven't heard of, such as the "High Quality Digital Audio Transmission System," the player can output using optical, coaxial, balanced digital, and even i.Link (Sony's FireWire flavor) ports. The latter should help you with those 200Mbps Super Audio CD DSD (Direct Stream Digital) transfers.

Sounds expensive. Oh, that's right, it is expensive. Let's hope you get what you pay for.

You know how sometimes you think up a gadget but you figure that no one will ever build it? Well, the Omnifi is one of those gadgets, except that it's real. The Omnifi is a digital media player for your car with a 20GB hard drive and an 802.11b WiFi attachment which actually makes it possible (assuming your car is within range) to wirelessly beam your music directly to your car from your PC. You can also set it to automatically transmit all sorts of information to your car, like the weather, news, etc. The hard drive can also detach and be connected to a PC (sorta like the Phatnoise system) if your car is parked too far away for WiFi. Sony MZ-NH600 Hi-MD Player Reviewed

Sony MZ-NH600 Hi-MD Player Reviewed 06/30/2004 09:23 AM

sony_mz-nh600.jpg imageSony's new Hi_MD MiniDisc players are creeping onto the market, and while most of us have passed over MiniDisc for bigger and presumably better things, the Hi-MD will let proponents of the standard eke along for a while longer, with 1GB of storage per disc and up to 45 hours of music at the lowest, crappiest compression rate. I don't feel like I have to throw up a bunch of MiniDisc disclaimers at this point -- if you're interested in the new low-end Sony MZ-NH600 player, for instance, you probably already know what you're getting into. Australian IT has the review, and except for the overly complicated 5-way controls, they give the plastic player a generally passing grade.

Another Hard Disk Sony Video Player?

Another Hard Disk Sony Video Player? 08/02/2004 10:25 AM

nextsonyhdd1.jpg imageSo there's stink about this one possibly being a fake, but there's a new Sony hard disk-based video player on Japanese website CD Report that claims to have a 20GB hard drive crammed into a unit just a hair bigger than the iPod mini (hence, the fake rumors). If it is legit, it is supposed to be released sometime around Christmas for a price in the neighborhood of $450 - not a bad price if it ends up being the real deal.

Of course, Sony learned from the HMP-A1 that people might actually like players that could support native MP3 playback, so the new unit is rumored to have only ATRAC support (that means, basically, that this thing will be a dud as a music player).

Item! I have it on good word that Sony is planning on launching another hard drive-based music player, called the Sony NW-HD1. It's all rumor at this point, of course, but according to my source it will be branded under the Walkman name and has "far better styling than the Vaio offer." Sony is apparently shopping it around to various outlets now to see what people think in preparation of an autumn launch. If anyone can grab me a picture of this mythical new unit, I would bake you the most delicious cupcake man has ever baked. Developing!

07/01/2004 08:41 PM
Engadget: Sony’s Network Walkman NW-HD1 - the world’s smallest 20GB ATRAC3 player. "The Network Walkman is supposed to be able to get an astounding thirty hours of battery life on a single charge." Dell has been advertising "twice the battery life of iPod" on the radio lately, but the fast talk at the end of the commercial says they assume 64kbps files. Most people probably have 128kbps files on their iPods, so the Dell DJ probably accesses the hard disk half as often -- voila, twice the battery life. And if you use 48kbps audio, like Sony does, then you get three times the iPod's battery life -- around 30 hours. When everybody's using the same parts, the only way to get a 2x or 3x advantage is to cheat.

compressor
09/14/2004 07:23 AM
Elemental Audio Systems on Tuesday introduced Neo dynium, a plug-in for RTAS, Audio Unit and VST-compatible audio software designed for compression and dynamics processing. It uses an "I/O Map" visual interface that helps audio pros optimize and direct their efforts, rather than relying on more common transfer curves and displays. Neodynium costs US$159 (and is available for $139 for a limited time). It works with Digidesign Pro Tools, Emagic Logic and other software. System requirements call for a G3 or faster with Mac OS X v10.2 or newer and a compatible host application.
