It's Crazy Sock Day at SLS, and you can see the entries on our terribly unofficial moblog! All of the pictures were taken with my Treo 600 or Kate's Samsung VGA-1000.

We're having great fun playing with Kate's new phone. It's got a camera with a flash, fun ringtones, Java for games, and a 14-day free trial of iKTV television! I took some pictures of the screens and posted them on my moblog.

Friday the 13th: Bad Luck

Friday the 13th: Bad Luck 02/14/2004 02:26 AM

Today was definitely Friday the 13th.

I don't post about the office on this weblog very often, but today was just one of those days. I'm a sales manager at work, and today, my "star performer" told me she had been offered a job at another company.

That means she's leaving.

Ugh... can't tell you how hard that hit me.

You see, I've been trying to build a new business around online advertising sales for my company for the past year and a half, and I've spent a lot of time teaching, training, and learning. I've really put a lot into getting my "star performer" to the level that she's at right now. When I started at the office, this person was pretty green. I had to mold her into the sales person I needed her to be, and she took it well. Very well, and she's become successful.

This year, my company gave her an award for improving so much. That made me feel very good about what I was doing and where we were heading.

Then, today, she tells me she's leaving.

As her friend, I can't help but be happy for her, and excited about her opportunities... but as her boss, I can't help but feel overwhelmed and stressed about the pressure this will put on top of all of the rest of the pressure I've put myself under trying to build this new part of our business.

We'll get buy without this "star performer" but this sets up back a few steps.

I'll post a note on Monday about the opening I need to fill, but, if you know someone in Austin that wants to sell online advertising at a local media company, please send me their resume.

Coffee Houses Cross Paths with History,

Coffee Houses Cross Paths with History,
Again
01/07/2004 02:37 PM
From the There's Nothing New Under the Sun Department, coffee houses in the 17th and 18th centuries were the Wi-Fi hotspots of their day: The Economist writes (without byline, as is its wont) about the parallels between the political and editorial foment that occurred in 17th and 18th century coffeehouses in England and, to a lesser extent, France, and how these centers of iquity (as opposed to iniquity, Wodehouse might write) led to the foundation of insurers and publications. In fact, coffee houses were often the mailing addresses for folks before street addresses were common. It all sounds awfully familiar, doesn't it? Wi-Fi hotspots in coffee houses thus have this excellent pedigree. The author of this piece is the same fellow who write the charming and excellent The Victorian Internet, which relayed the development of the telegraph and its effect on the planetary infosphere, and how it paralleled (and predicted) Internet trends, including the bubble. The author is working on a book now about the coffee house/Internet cafe overlap....

ourobourosI'm going to do today what I almost never do, and that is talk about another blogger, one who I've never met and, until a few days ago, had never heard of. Mark Brady at Fourobouros (the name is a play on the alchemist's symbol of a dragon devouring its own tail, representing a state of constant flux and reinvention, and the search for value and values) came to my attention while researching my post on Corporate Anorexia. Recently he has been writing about this and also about -- surprise! -- George Lakoff (as have I), and the Wal-Mart Dilemma (as have I). His recent post on Lakoff included the phrase "Don't tell me, show me", while my recent post on teaching children about nature included the phrase "we learn what we're shown, not what we're told".

What intrigues me is that I'd never heard of Mark or his blog, I suspect he's never heard of How to Save the World, and our blogrolls have only two common links. And when I looked at his bio, I found this remarkable passage:

After 2 years of ulcerated struggle, I left the last [ad] agency and helped cofound a boutique business development consultancy called Alchemy LLC, consisting of an architect, an organizational specialist, and me--an ad guy, along with a few alliance relationships in finance, process management, head-shrinking and cultural anthropology. We're problem solvers, what the French call Bricoleurs, cerebral when we have to be, but ferocious simplifiers when at all possible. We help small to mid-cap companies get healthy, and push healthy ones to get outrageous. It's great fun and very rewarding. Our clients are usually up aganst the wall and looking for fresh thinking. We aim to please. People have come to us looking for a business plan or marketing and we designed them a better distribution system or sales approach, instead. We get angry neighbors to find common cause with commercial real-estate developers, we help get VC's to see beyond less than attractive balance sheets, and we teach kids in elementary schools how to think creatively and middle schoolers to become balanced leaders. We design work places, make TV commercials and help people make nice and make money. People say we do these things well. One long-time client introduced us to a CEO retreat by saying we're "at the top of an industry that doesn't exist--yet." We like that. We're immensely curious and, humble. We speak very candidly. We don't take our selves too seriously. If you'll notice, all these things have one element in common: moving people, figuratively and literally. That's the real stuff. The rest is just tactics. I love what I do. I like to share, hence this blog. Life is good.

Great, eh? Wouldn't you just love to work with these guys?

All of this, besides letting you know about a great blog and a fascinating company, is my round-about way of making a point that I'm going to blog about next week: The Next Economy, whether that be a World of Ends Economy or a Support Economy, in which entrepreneurs will find and associate with each other to provide innovative, deeply valuable services to customers in a way that multinational corporations can never hope to match, depends utterly on the Internet providing us with a powerful means to find like minds and experts on anything under the sun. The bit of serendipity that I described above that allowed me to find Mark is a perfect example of how impossibly difficult that is with the tools, and shortage of knowledge, we struggle with today. The issues are:
  1. How do we get people to post to the Internet (and keep up-to-date) sufficient information about themselves in an appropriate format to allow us to find them, easily, when we need them?
  2. What kind of tool is needed to filter, qualify and leverage that information and (ideally, proactively and organically) connect us with like minds and needed experts, kind of a context-rich audited Yellow Pages of millions of people's individual interests and expertise. We know that search engines and first-generation social networking tools aren't up to the job. We need something completely different.
Time for some creative, very innovative thinking. Time to think how nature would solve (or does solve) this complex problem -- I'm thinking of the thousands of spring peeper frogs in my pond all calling out for the perfect mate. The solution probably lies in that place where parallel paths converge.

(Off for the long weekend -- back Tuesday. Take care of yourself.)

RESURRECT
FRIDAY FIVE?

RESURRECT
FRIDAY FIVE?
05/15/2004 12:50 PM
friday five logoA long-standing and very popular tradition in the blogosphere -- The Friday Five -- in which you were invited to answer the week's five questions on your blog and then link back to the home site, so participants can browse everyone's answers -- is no more. Heather, the woman who established and ran Friday Five single-handedly, has stopped asking the weekly questions so she can concentrate on her Globe of Blogs directory.

Every once in awhile when I needed something light for a Friday (or more often, a Saturday) post, I would turn to this site for inspiration. I participated about a dozen times. Once I had my five questions accepted as the questions of the week -- and with 600-700 people participating each week it was great exposure for my then-fledgling blog. Heather wisely decided not to turn the reins over to anyone else, since such sites always take on the unique flavour and style of their owner. Many people found a lot of the questions inane, but hundreds also protested when the questions were "too hard". So the questions stayed mostly lowbrow and the popularity (it's one of the 25 most blogrolled sites, with 2500 inbound blogs) stayed high.

I, for one, liked the highbrow, "too hard" questions. Their answers provided an insight into the mind and heart of the blogger that often could not be gleaned from their daily, impersonal posts. So my proposal is to create a Friday Five type weekly question (or at most two -- five is too many to allow time and space to elaborate on your answer), which we'd solicit, post, and aggregate answers to, through a Google Group (to save having to set up a separate place and buy bandwidth and server space for it). I'd further propose we run it Saturday (quietest day of the week on the blogosphere), and that it be called That's Awfully Personal, to reflect the fact that the answers should be revealing, more than just an off-the-cuff opinion poll or survey.

thst'd awfully personalHere's some examples of questions that might qualify:
  • Your home is aflame and burning out of control. All living creatures have been safely evacuated. You have time to go back in quickly and save one possession from the flames. What would it be, and why?
  • Your spouse/loved one has come down with an inexplicable and terminal illness. Their last request of you is to (re-)marry someone as soon as possible, and not unduly mourn their passing. Do you honour this request, and if so, who is the first person who comes to mind as a possible spouse?
  • You are one of five finalists in a winner-take-all $1 million lottery being decided by a reverse draw. A stranger offers you (and this is allowed) $160,000 now for your ticket, and says if you decline he will offer $200,000 if yours is one of the last 4 tickets, $267,000 if yours is one of the last 3 tickets, and $400,000 if yours is one of the last 2 tickets (each offer being 80% of the 'expected value' of the ticket at that point). One of the other finalists offers to split the million with you if yours and theirs are the last 2 tickets remaining, provided you agree to this irrevocably now with 5 tickets remaining. Which, if any, of the offers do you take, and why?
And here's the simple instructions that we could use:
  1. This Google Group has four sections: One for the Question of the Week, as selected by our Awfully Personal Panel and posted each Friday evening, a second for your permalinks to where you've answered the Question of the Week, a third for your suggestions for future Questions of the Week, and a fourth for general discussion about That's Awfully Personal.
  2. To participate, just look for this week's Question of the Week, copy and paste it into your blog post, along with your answer (usually a paragraph or two), then return to this Google Group and post your permalink (the URL where you've posted your answers) in the second, My Answers Permalink section. And feel free to browse others' answers and learn more about them -- maybe even find like minds and hearts.
  3. If you have a suggestion for Question of the Week, post it in the third section and our Panel will review it and, if selected, they will acknowledge you as the author with a link to your blog. Questions should ideally be challenging, so that the answers will be revealing (when answered honestly). But this isn't Truth or Dare -- we want people to want to answer honestly and to have to think a bit before they do.
  4. If you have questions or comments, please post them in the fourth section -- our Panel will read them and reply promptly.
  5. Thanks for playing!
What do you think of the idea?
