Microsoft Readies Web-Based Communicator
06/22/2005 02:18 AMMicrosoft is looking to extend the reach of its Office Communicator
2005 instant-messaging (IM) client via a new version that will be
completely Web-based. Microsoft is set to kick off on July 15 a first
private beta release of what it's currently calling the "Office
Communicator Web Access" client, company officials said on
Tuesday. The company expects to ship the final version before the end
of calendar 2005, officials said.
Communicator Web Access is similar to Microsoft's Outlook Web Access
product, said Anoop Gupta, the corporate vice president in charge of
Microsoft's Real-Time Collaboration Business Unit. "People need
reach and access from a lot of places," Gupta told Microsoft
Watch, in explaining why Microsoft decided to do a Web-based version
of Communicator
Office Communicator 2005, code-named
"Istanbul," is Microsoft's integrated client for IM,
voice, video, telephony and Web conferencing.

01/08/2004 07:36 PMToday at the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES),
Microsoft Corp. announced Windows® Media Connect, technology designed
to enable hardware manufacturers to easily develop devices such as
Digital Media Receivers (DMRs), which have rich functionality for
playing digital media files stored on personal computers over home
networks. A broad range of industry leaders have announced their
support of this upcoming technology, including leading PC OEMs and
consumer electronics device manufacturers including Arcadyan
Technology Corp., Creative Labs, Dell Inc., Mediabolic Inc., PRISMIQ
Inc., Rockford Corp., Roku, Simple Devices Inc. and Toshiba. Leading
content service providers such as LAUNCH Music on Yahoo!, MusicNow
(formerly FullAudio), and Napster also endorsed Windows Media Connect
for its ability to extend the reach of their content and services to a
new range of consumer devices. Available in 2004, Windows Media
Connect technology will overcome two critical hurdles faced by
networked media devices today: compatibility between proprietary
devices and ease of access to content stored on the PC.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-050:
Vulnerability in Microsoft Word and
Microsoft Excel Could Allow Arbitrary
Code to Run (831527)
11/13/2003 12:36 AMA security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Word that could allow
malicious code execution. This vulnerability exists due to to the way
Word checks the length of a data value (Macro names) embedded in a
document. If a specially crafted document were to be opened it could
overflow a data value in Word and allow arbitrary code to be executed.
If successfully exploited, an attacker could then take the same
actions as the user had permissions to carry out, such as adding,
changing or deleting data or files, communicating with a web site or
formatting the hard drive.

Musicians Making Lots Of Money, Money,

09/03/2004 02:40 PMJeremiah writes
"Amidst the public ballyhoo about how rampant P2P piracy is costing
the music business its very life (gasp! NO!), BMI announced it collected a record
level of revenue and royalty payout to its artist members. From
their press release: "BMI has reported revenues of $673 million for
the 2004 fiscal year, an increase of nearly $43 million, 6.8% over the
prior year. Royalties of more than $573 million were distributed to
our songwriters, composers and music publishers, an increase of $40
million or 7.5% from the previous year, and the most ever paid by an
American PRO." Another interesting tidbit: "During the period
1995-2004, BMI had an average annual revenue growth rate of 9%..." If
I read this right, BMI has been reporting solid growth over the last
nine years, which makes me question the industry's claims about P2P.
Either P2P ate into their growth (not mentioned), they found a way to
cope with it (plausible), or it may actually help music sales.
Whatever. Reminds me a bit of a spec I did for a life-insurance
company's radio ad: Money
, Money, Money (mp3 file)."

Helps People Make Sense of Their Money
09/21/2004 08:41 AMMarking the largest development effort for Microsoft(R) Money since
the personal finance software was launched 13 years ago, Microsoft
Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) today announced Microsoft Money 2005 Premium,
Deluxe, Standard and Small Business. Completely rebuilt to simplify
daily financial tasks, Money 2005 is designed to answer the growing
number of consumer requests for a simple solution that addresses the
three primary areas of financial concern: tracking account balances,
monitoring spending and paying bills. Consumers today have less time
than ever to spend managing their finances, which has contributed to
the number of American households banking online -- due to its
convenience and efficiency -- reaching nearly 33 million.(1) Money
2005 builds on this trend by helping people access all their accounts
in one place and providing automated tools that reduce or eliminate
the manual entry required by traditional personal finance software.

New Blog Gets Big Bucks
Ad Age (reg req): Sony Pays $25,000 a
Month for Gawker Blog. Sony Consumer Electronics e-Solutions Group
is the exclusive sponsor for the launch of LifeHacker, a blog that
goes live today about the software of personal gadgetry by Gawker
Media, according to the online company. The deal, which also includes
placements on Gizmodo, Gawker's earlier gadget title, will cost Sony
in the range of $25,000 a month, according to a source close to the
deal. The sponsorship runs for about three months.
Well, there go the pay scales at Nick Denton's company...
I'm not nuts about the sole-sponsor ad model, but it's obviously going
to be a wave of the future in personal journalism.
Lo
ic also said that John Battelle mentioned in Davos that Boing

That's serious money. No wonder Jason
