Office 2003 Tool: Local Installation
Source Tool
05/28/2004 01:48 AM
The Local Installation Source Tool is a wizard to help manage your Local Installation Source (LIS) on computers running Microsoft Office 2003. The LIS Tool allows you to enable or disable LIS, and to move the MsoCache folder to a new volume. This download is intended for use by customers and network administrators with LIS issues who contact Microsoft Product Support Services. Local Installation Source is a Setup feature. When a user installs Microsoft Office 2003 from a CD or a compressed CD image on the network, Setup copies any required installation files to a hidden folder on the local computer. Microsoft Windows Installer uses this local installation source to install Office, and the local source remains available for repairing, reinstalling or updating Office later on. Users can install features on demand or run Setup in maintenance mode to add new features without their original media.

No-Shopping Christmas

No-Shopping Christmas 10/29/2003 01:15 AM
I would like to propose a change. This change would be very large, yet not difficult. It would dramatically reduce the stress in our lives during the most stressful months of the year. It would save us money where money would normally be thrown away to debatable purposes. It would save gas, electricity, paper, plastic and, on some level, your soul. I propose a No-Shopping Christmas.

Shopping for Don Park

I searched myself on Web's Biggest (via Ross Mayfield) and got this ad-sponsored search result:

Shop For Don Park Large Selection

Hmm.  Apparently I am on sale.  So I followed the link and got:

Dog Park at Amazon.com
Amazon.com/dvd
Save up to 35% on top sellers. Qualified orders over $25 ship free

Ergo, I am a dog park available for 35% off at Amazon.  I wonder if being a dog park is better than being a fire hydrant.

Google Shopping? 10/15/2002 07:15 AM
The German news site "heise" says Google is working on a new "product search" (English translation) with partners like Amazon, eBay and CDNOW. It should be interesting to see how this ends up. On shopping with MacUser...

On shopping with MacUser... 03/06/2004 01:55 AM

This is the second time it's happened and it's as weird as the first. On the bus this morning I was reading the latest issue of MacUser (nice magazine redesign, shame about the old-style Mac typeface in the logo) when I find myself reading about myself.

Back in the real world, Tom Coates has been blogging from his trip to Los Angeles, lamenting the lure of the Apple Store and that all-so-familiar dilemma of need versus want. "The shoes that I needed to replace last year at ETCon are still firmly on my feet. And I have no new clothes of any sort. I do, however, have an enormous pile of stuff from the AppleStore and a desperate salivating urge to go back and blow another £200 on a new iPod. I only wish I could claim to be surprised by this turn of events.

Weird. In case anyone is interested, I did not buy an iPod after all, although I kind of wish I had. I bought an iSight, which I can recommend whole-heartedly, some Apple earbuds that sucked ass with such commensurate skill that they should set themselves up with a business catering to the needs of Hollywood celebrities, and some rather useful and not-available-here Apple-oriented screen-wipes. Since my return I have bought myself shoes by the same company as my last pair (I'm not a great shoes man) and basically the same green as my last pair went after a couple of years. So in the end, everything worked out OK, I guess...

Shopping Cliche

Shopping Cliche 08/22/2004 09:18 PM

Yesterday, my family went to Palo Alto IKEA store to get a new desk for my son because he will be starting junior highschool this fall.  Last IKEA I visited was in Berkeley, so this was my first visit to this store.  Parking was confusing but we had fun; chief Don leading his tribe through the jungle of furnitures and people.  Desks were cheap so I let my son have his pick.  Thankfully, he chose a corner desk that costs only $129.  Chairs, however, weren't cheap and there weren't many choices in the 'reasonable' range.  So we punted on the chair for now.

Today, my wife and I put the desk together.  Hmm.  The desk looked much bigger than it seemed at IKEA.  Maybe they should put warning labels around IKEA showrooms:

Furnitures May Be Bigger Than They Appear at IKEA.

While recouperating from IKEA Aftermath, I ordered some Moleskine notebooks from ShipTheWeb, one for each member of the family, to complete the shopping cliche.  Frankly, I immensely enjoy not shopping but I don't mind sacrificing my virtues to make lasting impressions on my son.
