Microsoft Joins Law Enforcement to Track
Perpetrators of Emerging Worm Attacks
against Computer Users
05/03/2004 05:15 AMA recent increase in malicious activity on the Internet, including the
development of attack tools and exploit code, has resulted in an
automated attack against computer users in the form of a worm
identified as "W32.Sasser.worm" ("Sasser"). Through this worm, the
attacker is attempting to exploit systems that are not protected
against the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS)
vulnerability, which is mitigated by the use of a firewall and fixed
in Microsoft Security Update MS04-011 on April 13, 2004. There is
additional malicious activity in the form of variants of a worm known
as "Agobot" (or "Agrobot"), which similarly seeks to exploit systems
not protected by a firewall or the installation of MS04-011.

Xeni Jardin:
In North Korea: an explosion, a giant crater, and a "peculiar cloud."
Both the South Korean government and the US government say they don't
believe North Korea conducted a nuclear test.
President Bush and his top advisers have received intelligence reports
in recent days describing a confusing series of actions by North Korea
that some experts believe could indicate the country is preparing to
conduct its first test explosion of a nuclear weapon, according to
senior officials with access to the intelligence.
While the indications were viewed as serious enough to warrant a
warning to the White House, American intelligence agencies appear
divided about the significance of the new North Korean actions, much
as they were about the evidence concerning Iraq's alleged weapons
stockpiles.
Some analysts in agencies that were the most cautious about the Iraq
findings have cautioned that they do not believe the activity detected
in North Korea in the past three weeks is necessarily the harbinger of
a test. A senior scientist who assesses nuclear intelligence says the
new evidence "is not conclusive," but is potentially worrisome.

Jargon: The Biggest Computer Security
Threat
Jargon: The Biggest Computer Security
Threat
04/04/2005 01:54 PMIf you're online these days, computer security problems come in all
sorts of flavors including viruses, worms, phishing, trojans, zombies,
spyware, malware, adware, DDoS, spam, spim, spit, buffer overflows and
many others... and, of course,
most people have no
clue what most of those mean -- which leads them to (a) freaking
out about the insecurity of using computers while (b) having no idea
how to really protect themselves. While some may question this
particular study, it does make a good point that a lot of the jargon
used to describe security threats can sometimes be more confusing for
non-techie computer users. What this means, though, is that many less
savvy users are simply going to
expect their ISP to keep them
secure, which may be quite a challenge for ISPs who aren't prepared
for that sort of thing.
