Defending the Great White Tax
12/12/2003 04:17 PMAs noted previously, the Copyright Board of Canada has approved a
tariff on digital audio recorders. Devices like Dell's DJ, Apple's
iPod and other MP3 devices will increase in price from $2 to $25. The
move mirrors the Canadian policy of additional taxes for blank media
such as cassettes, minidisks and CDs. The tariffs are collected on
behalf of musicians, songwriters and other copyright holders in order
to compensate them for non-commercial distribution of music.

The Great International White Van

The Great International White Van
Speaker Scam
04/11/2004 05:05 PMAn interesting scam has resurfaced in the last few years, taking the
world by storm. It is at least a decade old scam, remarkably well
organized, bordering on mafia-like proportions. There are many slight
variations, but the scam is mostly the same- two guys, in a white
truck(hence the name) approach you in a mall or store parking lot.
Perhaps at a stop light, or they wave at you frantically as you drive
down the highway. "Hey buddy, wanna buy a set of speakers?" Sounds
absurd, but all manner of people fall for it all across the world.

Melbourne, Australia, there's
allege

ing not quite right swimming around in a humble trout farmer's

Nessie?
Some selected quotes from the linked articles.
A giant eel, believed to be around 13ft-long with a
head the size of a football has been spotted at the trout farm at
Warburton.
It is believed the eel washed into the farm's ponds
during this month's record breaking storms.
"We hope to catch him alive and take him to the
Melbourne Aquarium."
I reckon it's true. Might even go and throw a line in myself, hey.
It's just a shame that there are no pictures or film evidence thus
far.

02/15/2004 10:44 AMJD's got a nice
piece about Australia's caving to US pressure re copyright. The
result: Australian film and culture will be harder to spread and

Australia's national welfare agency
mulls move from NetWare to OES
04/22/2004 03:48 AMI was reading "The Australian," Australia's national newspaper, last
week (well, the online version at news.com.au). It's a general purpose
paper (like the "New York Times" or "The Washington Post") but one
which devotes more space to IT than any other general news source I've
come across. What struck me this time, though, was a report that
Australia's national welfare organization, Centrelink, was considering
scrapping its 400 NetWare servers in favor of a different server
operating system.
