Give it up for Pam!

Give it up for Pam! 08/12/2004 08:09 PM

If you run a web site and you've ever been mentioned in the New York Times, you probably have Pamela LiCalzi O'Connell to thank. Her weekly "Online Diary" column in every Thursday's Circuits section was filled with many a reference to weblogs, webloggers, and the stuff weblogs link to. Today's column is her last and although she has mentioned me or my sites dozens of times, I still get a little thrill each time she does. It's time to say thanks (and double thanks for the double plug of MetaFilter and Ticketstubs), so thanks Pamela, for sharing the wonderful world of weblogs with a wider audience.

How Much Data Are You Willing To Give Up
For What?
01/07/2004 06:33 PM
This shouldn't really be much of a surprise at all, but the article is written as if it's completely out of the blue that people shopping for groceries have no problem being tracked by RFID, if they receive discounts. There is a limit, though, as it depends on what information is being collected about them. This is the exact same thing as people who use "frequent shopper cards" at supermarkets, so I don't understand what's so surprising. Also, the article says that people balk at "more personal information" being collected - but doesn't say what kind of information people consider too personal. Still, the article positions this as "shifting attitudes" towards RFID - which isn't true at all. It's just that people see it as being similar to a frequent shopper card (which, in many ways, it is).

Give it up for the Gonz

Give it up for the Gonz 12/09/2003 03:49 AM

When I lived in SF, my supervisor was Matt Gonzalez and my experience with his office was great, as he responded to my comments in a timely manner. I also remember following the local news and frequently seeing him getting press for following common sense instead of party politics. I recently learned he's the only mayoral candidate that has roommates and rents in SF, so he's probably got more in common with 3/4 of the voters than anyone else.

I'd love to see Matt win and steer the city back on the right path. Vote for him if you can.

What rights will you give up in order to get some work? We are guaranteed certain protections against the tyranny of the State, but what's to stop private companies from ignoring those protections, so long as they can require us to agree to forego them in order to receive employment?

Dana on Ev Williams: Give It Time

Dana (over at Moore's Lore) thinks we should hang Ev Williams because of the recent Blogger release. I haven't yet fooled around with the Picasa integration (see yesterday's story) but it looks like the push is toward mass market appeal, as opposed to more features for weenies like us.

The jury will have to remain out a while on that one, and perhaps it will be better to look at the next series of releases, to see if the numbers creep up and if defection rates (always very high for blogging tools) go down. [Get Real]

BUT OTHERS DISAGREE

Blogger's RSS Decision: Atom Only.

(Geek alert: This may be boring to people who don't care about the innards of technology.) I'm sorry to see that Blogger's latest incarnation doesn't support multiple kinds of syndication formats, and is going with Atom only. It would be trivially easy to do so. (Blogger Pro users can still create RSS 1.0 feeds, as I understand things.) A couple of months ago, someone from the Blogger team suggested to me that this was a server issue -- that several million users creating more than one kind of XML file would somehow be problematic from a resources standpoint. Really? A problem for the company with (best guess) 100,000 servers and plans to offer anyone who wants it a gigabyte of disk space for e-mail? Google has a right to do this, just as UserLand has a right not to support Atom (and Movable Type not to support RSS 2.0 and so on). It would be nice to see a resolution to this fork in the RSS road, though.

[Dan Gillmor's eJournal]

I myself kind of wish Blogger did support RSS - but then again, you have to see it from their POV.  By ONLY supporting Atom, they'll help force Atom adoption.  Nothing wrong with that.

Develoeprs are like stubborn mules.  But Atom is here to stay - they might as well bite the bullet and support it.  But that doesn't mean RSS goes away.

I have some Gmail Invites to give away 06/20/2004 10:00 PM

Google has given me a number of Gmail invites to give away and I thought I would offer them up here. Being this is a technical site I am looking for technical resources so the person that suggest to me the best resource will get an account. I will give everyone 3 days to come up with suggestions and you are not limited from only commenting once you can put in as many suggestions as you want.

I currently have a pretty huge resource list that I cull information from so you better dig deep.

I already have the MT-Blacklist plugin installed, but manual updates to the blacklist aren't cutting it--too much would've-been-caught crap's making it through. Time to break down and automatically update the blacklist. Luckily someone's already got a tool. (Yeah, it's python, but I honestly don't care what's in the Happy Fun Ball so long as it works) At least I get comments mailed so the crap gets seen quickly and doesn't linger, but I'd rather it not be up in the first place....

Gmail Give away round 2

Gmail Give away round 2 06/24/2004 06:22 AM

Someone asked during our last round that I donate some Gmail accounts to the gmail4troops.com site and I have done that. I know what it is like to have piss poor e-mail service while overseas.

Anyway for this round of Gmail giveaways same rules apply as last time. I am looking for Tech Links everyone has a juicy site that they like to visit that they try and keep under their hat. Those that participate can give me as many links as they want just make em good links. The winners announced today from round 1 provided me with a bunch of great sites they did not limit their submissions to one site.

Also if you send me to a personal non technical site as a couple of people did that will not gain you brownie points, it will result in getting your comment removed for being link spam. I will announce the winners on Saturday or Sunday. If you have a idea for a contest for a Gmail account that would be stacked in your favor why don't you send me a private e-mail with your idea.

Musicians That Give Away Music

Musicians That Give Away Music 01/02/2004 06:19 PM
Well, it's a start. We're pretty harsh here on folks in the music industry who can't seem to figure out how to use music for promotional purposes, but at the same time, we should encourage those who do understand how the world is changing. Thus, it's nice to see the San Francisco Chronicle put out a big list of well known musicians who offer up some downloadable music for free. It's not at all comprehensive, but it does prove a nice counter point to the recording industry's insistence that "if you didn't pay for it, you stole it".
