Dances with Robots

Dances with Robots 02/10/2004 03:00 AM
MIT student Sommer Gentry and her husband Dorry Segev have developed a highly evolved system of robot communication and control via haptic signaling. The system is better known as "Swing Dancing". They started with two human swing dancers. From there they progressed to "Jedi Swing Dancing" in which two blindfolding humans dance (thus proving that haptic communication alone is sufficient for human-to-human dancing). Now they've progress to a human-robot dance in which the human communicates with a robot arm haptically. The robot or the human can lead. Read more in the MIT press release. Or for the full story see Sommer's research papers on Haptic-only lead and follow dancing and related subjects.

BT Dances Around Convergence

BT Dances Around Convergence 02/01/2005 09:13 PM
Peter Judge at TechWorld reports that BT may be introducing a combined Wi-Fi/cellular service, but it's not what you think: When customers make calls in their homes using a combined GSM/Wi-Fi phone, the call is carried over Wi-Fi between the phone and the access point. But the access point is backhauled over the GSM network. Instead of realizing the cost savings of carrying a call over IP over a broadband fixed connection, BT chooses to use the more expensive GSM network. The service becomes, in essence, a method for improving cell phone coverage in the home. The idea doesn't make sense in any context, but you might understand it if the offering was being made by a cell phone operator that stands to benefit by keeping calls on its network. But this is BT, which doesn't have a cell phone network and will supply the cellular link via resale agreements with a mobile operator. It would make so much more sense for BT to backhaul the access points using its own wired network, using voice over IP and charging customers slightly reduced rates than the cell phone networks for the calls that use the system. That sounds like it could be a profitable service and would allow BT to beat out cellular operators that don't own their own landline networks. This service is basically an update to the previously announced Bluephone initiative and shouldn't be available until 2006. Given the track record of the Bluephone plan, which was initially set to be introduced using Bluetooth instead of Wi-Fi in 2003, it might not be surprising if the whole plan changes again....

Not many successful comic strip artists can say they have a degree in physics. Nor can most of them admit that they're successful despite a rudimentary art education. Bill Amend can lay claim to both of those statements, however, and in 2003 his comic strip, FoxTrot, marked its 15th year of stories chronicling the hilarious misadventures of the Fox clan. 2003 brought another milestone as well: three years since Amend's decision to simplify the laborious aspects of comic strip creation with his Mac.

What Dell Support Thinks of Dell

What Dell Support Thinks of Dell 03/30/2005 04:59 PM

In an InfoWorld Gripe Line Blog, anonymous Dell employees are asked to make their feelings known about working for Dell. As we all know, Dell moved their tech support to India and they have employees in other parts of the world now too. It sounds like the new users dumb questions and working with Windows constant crashing and errors have driven even the Indian support workers to the brink of giving up. Here are a few quotes from the above story..

Back about eighteen months ago, the comments started off pretty apologetic about the Dell support gripes readers were airing. A poster who said he or she had just resigned after six months with Dell support in Hyderabad said that Dell technicians would sometimes know right off that a problem required a replacement component, "but we are bound by company policy which prohibits us from dispatching components until we finish the script given us by Dell management," the poster wrote. "I basically felt really bad in situations wherein I had to make really old people open up their computers, and I did in fact meet people on the phone who would be in tears if we told them that they need to open their machines.

"I too am working in Dell tech support," the poster said, saying his job had been to route calls to the proper support group. "The great thing is that tomorrow is my last day here. Great because this by far has been one of the least gratifying and frustrating positions I have ever held. Yes, there are extensive and considerable problems with Dell tech support. Their outsourcing to India is not even the least of them. Every day is a continuous assault by absolutely clueless and irate customers and an ineffective phone-based support system that is enough to make anyone crack. I'm saying that it all sucks: Dell's systems and their support and the morons who purchase them ... So many times I've had to restrain myself from telling customers who are whining about what a piece their Dell is that, hey, guess you should've bought a Mac. Goodbye, Dell!"

Only in the public sector 01/18/2004 03:51 PM

Only a government agency would have hours like this. Not only can a real business not get away with something that complicated, I don’t think it would occur to anyone to do that in the first place.
