12/08/2003 12:53 PMSun Microsystems' StarOffice 7, released November 12, offers
significant advantages in performance, usability, and stability over
rival commercial office suites, including Microsoft Office. However,
when the comparison is to OpenOffice.org version 1.1, the open source
project from which StarOffice takes its code, it's harder to say where
the advantage lies.

the largest StarOffice 7 delivery in North America. As a result, about

04/09/2004 06:34 PMQwest's claim of being first telco to offer DSL/Wi-Fi gateway bundle
contradicted by SBC's offering: Alert reader Chester Cade, an SBC
customer, contacted us to provide details about SBC Yahoo!'s DSL
offering for residential customers noting that the offer of a $149 or
$179 Wi-Fi/DSL router/modem bundle (with $99 off for service
commitment) has been available for months. Qwest's press release
claims bragging rights: Qwest is the first major telecommunications
company to offer customers a wireless-ready modem, and the company
also has decided to make this the standard modem for all of its new
DSL customers. The latter part may be true, but it would appear SBC
beat them (quietly) to the punch. The device that SBC is offering
appears to be the HomePortal 1000HW, which is a DSL router with

Sun's no-op announcement
Sun's no-op announcement
02/01/2005 08:49 PMLast year IBM took a significant step forward in cooperation with the
free software community, by offering blanket licenses for 500 of its
patents to all free software developers. This does not cover all of
IBM's software patents, which must number in the thousands. And there
are other areas where IBM does not yet cooperate with the free
software community--they have not provided the necessary information
to port a free BIOS to ThinkPads, for instance, and they are still
pursuing Treacherous Computing. Nonetheless, this is a real step.
Recently Sun made an announcement that superficially seems similar. It
said that Sun had given us "free access to Sun OpenSolaris related
patents under the Common Development and Distribution License." But
those words do not really make sense. The CDDL is a license for the
copyright on software, not a policy for licensing patents. It applies
to specific code and nothing else. (Copyright and patents have
essentially nothing in common in the requirements they impose on the
public.)

There are three basic features for the tool: inserting graphical data
objects into PowerPoint, saving graphical data objects for future use,
and retrieving saved graphical data objects for reuse. Because the
Data Assistant creates a connection between PowerPoint and the host
application of the data object (Excel or Visio), you have the option
of inserting the data object as it was saved or refreshing it to
reflect any changes that were made to the data object.

11/05/2003 02:29 PMSTLtoday: "The Matrix Revolutions" is awful. It's
not merely hapless or disappointing - it's a total catastrophe, an
apocalyptic waste of money and talent that obliterates its very
purpose, which was to resolve the cosmological questions that were
posed by that misbegotten middle child, "The Matrix Reloaded."
Daily Trojan: "by the time the long awaited
denouement is delivered, which reveals the power behind the Machine
World, the "Deus Ex Machina," most viewers will already be looking
at their watches."

Tri-City Herald: "If this is
what big-budget freedom does to filmmakers, they should be kept in
chains. Louder, longer, more expensive and dumber than its
predecessors, "Revolutions" is a mediocrity that will provide escapism
only to those who head for the theater exits."
CBS News: "Revolutions" eats all of the goodwill built up by
"The Matrix," and then some. It isn't just bad moviemaking -- it's
a bizarrely self-destructive film."
BBC
NEWS: "No-one really expects sequels to be better than the
original, but Matrix Revolutions is a crushing disappointment in
almost every way."

The new Doctor Who
series has been airing on BBC Television for three weeks now. And it
is "good TV" Most all of the reviews are startlingly positive, far
more than I've seen for a television series in a long, long time.
What is most striking is that many of the commentaries about the
"New Who" state that it is just plain ole' good television
that combines something intelligent, something scary, something
mysterious and something balls-out fun. In our world of reality
television, what other series would you classify as being "good
tv"? What makes for "good TV"? (Link goes to a fan

War of Reviewers: Amazon accidentally posted the real names of
anonymous book reviewers on their site, and in the process, revealed
that the whole user-submitted review process is garbage.
But even with reviewer privacy restored, many people say
Amazon's pages have turned into what one writer called "a rhetorical
war," where friends and family members are regularly corralled to
write glowing reviews and each negative one is scrutinized for the
digital fingerprints of known enemies.
One well-known writer admitted privately — and gleefully — to
anonymously criticizing a more prominent novelist who he felt had
unfairly reaped critical praise for years. She regularly posts
responses, or at least he thinks it is her, but the elegant rebuttals
of his reviews are also written from behind a

Danny Gregory has reviewed a bunch of pens, accompanied by his
drawings of the pens.
"Rotring Rapidoliner: I am really in love with this pen
these days and I never would of thunk it. I first tried Rapidographs
when I was a teenager but they always clogged and leaked and were a
pain to fill. I was forever dismantling the nibs and washing them in
the sink and finding ink blots on my shirts. This pen is perfect. My
nib is the finest they make and the pen just won’t clog or skip.
The guts are disposable, for $4 you get a fresh new nib and supply of
Indian ink. I have been drawing with this pen every day for two months
and am still on my original cartridge. The pen’s feeling is
ultra smooth, a little creamy and a little brittle, like icing on a
cupcake. The best $10 I ever spent."
