Distance Doctoring, Distance Nursing And
Distance Learning... All Coming Back
Distance Doctoring, Distance Nursing And
Distance Learning... All Coming Back
05/12/2004 03:58 AMThe internet makes it easier to communicate with people over large
distances, and for years we've been hearing about the power of
"distance" everything. More recently, some of that talk had died down
after the early promises of distance learning/doctoring/whatever
failed to live up to its early hype. However, it appears that the
distance concept is coming back into fashion. One after the other, we
just came across three such stories. First, is the news of a hospital
in Michigan that is using a
robot with a video screen for a head to let remote doctors talk
to and examine patients. The doctor's can control the robot from
another location (such as home) in order to look over a patient
without being there in person. Of course, the idea isn't to replace
the need for the doctor to be present, but to make it easier in
situations when the doctor is away and is needed quickly (such as to
look over something in the middle of the night when they're home).
Meanwhile, over in the Netherlands, it's not the doctors who get to
stay home, but the patients, who can now use a
webc
am system to communicate with nurses. The idea is to help out the
elderly who are confined to their homes but can't afford to have a
healthcare worker visiting them on a regular basis. Meanwhile,
outside of the healthcare field it appears that even
e-learning is making a comeback, as companies are using it more
strategically, to help keep employees up-to-date and trained - but not
relying on it as a full replacement for training programs. No matter
what, it looks like another bunch of concepts discredited during the
boom and bust years are now making a comeback.

06/14/2004 04:21 PMOn Saturday morning, Alaina and I met in Central Park to run the
Circle of Friends NY Mini 10K. Don't let the word "mini" in the title
fool you, this was a full 10K (6.2 miles). To my surprise, Alaina
greeted me with the news that she hoped to break her time set last
year and that she was looking to run 9:05 miles.
I've been running for close to four weeks now, after taking time off
for illness. But I haven't been training that hard. I told her I'd see
what I could do. We stayed together through 5K, crossing the half-way
mark in something close to 27 minutes. But at the top of the hill past
The Ravine, I bade her farewell, told her to run fast, and fell behind
into the pack of slower runners. I was hot and tired, and couldn't
believe I had half a race left to run. Never had 3.1 miles seemed so
long.
But slow and steady it was, with stops at 4 and 5 miles for water. And
about a minute and a half after Alaina, I crossed the finish line. My
time was 1:00:11, with a pace of 9:42 -- quite a bit off 9:05. But I
did it, and I've never been so happy to get a silly medal in my life.
From here on out, I'm doing more speed work so I can get faster. I
think I've said that before, but this time I mean it.

Systems That Keep Track Of Stuff
07/08/2004 12:33 PMThe Pentagon certainly isn't known for efficiency in their business
processes, and no one ever said they needed to be run in the same
manner as a profitable business, but the fact that they
can't
even track the thousands of different databases and logistics
systems that are supposed to keep track of all of their purchases
and assets is a bit worrisome. At the very least it's a huge recipe
for fraud, with plenty of already greedy enough defense contractors
clearly abusing the system for great profit to themselves -- at the
expense of our own tax dollars.

Wearable Robots
Wearable Robots
06/14/2004 06:03 PMRemember the scene in the first Alien movie where Ripley fights the
Queen baddie using a semi-robotic lifting machine? Well, it looks like
that technology is getting closer to real-world applications. Inventor
Steven Jacobsen is s
howing off a prototype of his device, and is working with robotics
gurus Sarcos to make it a
production reality.
Strap it on, go for a walk on the treadmill or up and down stairs
while carrying a 90-kilogram load on your back, and it feels as if
you’re carrying nothing, says Jacobsen. You can even balance on one
foot with a person on your back and barely feel any more fatigued than
if you were standing by yourself, he adds. The exoskeleton adds
strength because it stays in parallel with the user’s legs and pushes
on the ground.
Military uses seem to be first in line for this device, but I can
think of lots of other uses for it in industry, construction, even in
nursing homes — anywhere lifting and lifting-related injuries
are involved. I don't think they'll have one ready for my backyard
landscaping project though.

One Step Closer To Wearable Displays
05/07/2004 05:44 PMPeople have been talking about display technology embedded in a pair
of glasses for years, and it's looking like
they may not be that far away. Microdisplay
companies are doing good business building mini-screens for digital
cameras and mobile phones, but the idea of wearable heads-up displays
is where they expect the big money to come from. They're already
being used in military and medical environments, but they're moving
one step down the latter to industrial uses as well. From there, it's
not that much farther to go for more general purposes. Right now,
most of the heads-up displays are still bulky and ugly (though, not
nearly as bulky as they were a few years ago), but the companies
clearly realize where this is headed, and are working hard to make
glasses with embedded displays that are both functional and "cool"
looking. Combined with a phone or a personal mobile gateway device,
and you could have full internet access all the time. As someone in
the article points out, at that point, what we use internet access for
may change in completely unexpected ways.
