ADHOC Conference Report
ADHOC Conference Report
07/24/2004 04:19 PMI've been at the
ADHOC Conference, formerly known as MacHack, since
Wednesday.
Although the conference had fewer attendees than previous years, it's
still the same conference and all of this year's sessions were Mac
related. We had as many high quality sessions as previous MacHacks,
plus cocoa training from
Big Nerd Ranch. We also had a great keynote by
David Pogue. I've posted a picture album
here.

Spam Conference Trip Report
01/18/2003 10:48 AMSpam Conference Trip Report
Yesterday was the first ever Spam Conference and it was held at MIT.
First off I have to give huge kudos to Paul Graham the organizer. In
a little over a month he put together a truly outstanding conference
--- and the interest level was astonishing. They expected "50 to 60"
and instead 560 signed up. And since the room was basically full and
it held 566 by number of seats, I'd say roughly 520 to 540 actually
made it. And don't think that these were all local MIT geeks either;
I sat next to a researcher from IBM Zurich, had lunch with people from
Cloudmark (San Francisco), met the founder of pobox (Philadelphia),
spoke with Tony Bowden at length (England) and others. Presentations
came from BrightMail, Popfile, Microsoft France, MIT, Mitsubishi
Electric Research Lab, ShopIP, MessageLabs and others.
Most of the discussions focused on "Naive Statistical Bayesian
Classifiers" such as iFile and Popfile (although many other systems
were represented including other types). If I can find the papers
online I'll post links to them. Otherwise Google for them from the
info at the Spam Conference page. More on the conference later or
tomorrow.

A report summarizing the findings of these discussions is presented

New York: Report
06/22/2005 02:41 AMCollaborative technologies are changing the way people interact,
and key elements of successful implementations will have both presence
- to allow communities of people to interact with “one
click”- and persistence - which will enable a memory or
continuity of that interaction. Already, collaborative technology has
enabled productivity increases, but the true transformational changes
will be evolutionary from today’s contextual collaborative
through the year 2020, when a variety of social factors combine with
technology. Among…

ATI's X800 All-In-Wonder Launch
ATI's X800 All-In-Wonder Launch
09/07/2004 10:52 AMThanks to jerry for posting in the BPN.
In an announcement that’s unlikely to surprise anyone, ATI
has launched a new member of its All-in-Wonder multimedia graphics
cards based on the Radeon X800 XT GPU. The new card will be the first
to use ATI’s new purple and gold livery, intended to
distinguish its multimedia products.
This is also the first card to incorporate ATI’s own TV
tuner chipset, which still uses Philips-sourced components but is now
integrated directly onto the PCB. It’s a lot smaller than
the outsourced units on previous AIWs, making for a much more
streamlined card. ATI has also included FM radio as well as a TV
tuner. Radio programming can be paused and time shifted using the
FM-ON-DEMAND feature in a similar fashion to TV.
The new AIW will include an updated ‘Identity’
connector which can be used to attach the new stackable I/O modules.
Instead of having to connect everything at once, or have two break-out
boxes (one input, one output), ATI now gives you the best of both
worlds. You can have only input, only output, or both clipped
together. SCART output is also now an option for Europe, plus
component output for use with TVs that support the connection.
The new Remote Wonder II RF remote control will be included in the
bundle, although this depends on the specific OEM package. The RW II
has an increased range of 60 feet and better mouse control functions.
The package ships with Multimedia Center 9.02, which can also be
downloaded for existing Radeon AIW cards. With the launch of the PCI
TV Wonder in Europe, MC 9.02 will now support MULTVIEW in the UK,
enabling owners of a TV wonder and AIW in one system to record and
play back video simultaneously, or watch two programs at once. TVTV is
used in Europe to provide EPG (electronic programming guide), but
it’s Web-based and not built in like Windows XP Media Center
Edition’s EPG.
In its initial form, the Radeon X800 AIW will be an AGP adapter. It
will be available from the usual ATI AIW partners –
Sapphire, GeCube, Connect3D, Club3D, Hightech, and TUL (formerly
PowerColor). Pricing had not been set at the time of launch.

ATI's Answer to Nvidia's MXM: Axiom
05/28/2004 12:44 PM
Rumor has it that ATI will
be announcing their answer to Nvidia's MXM laptop videocard
specification with a standard of their own called 'Axiom,'
which they may officially announce as soon as next week. While modular
videocard options for laptops is a Good Thing, it's almost certain
that the MXM and Axiom will not be interoperable, meaning you'll still
be stuck with one vendor in your upgrade path.
That picture is totally not real, but it amused me to think of tiny
fans mounted to tiny video cards.
