Warez spammers discover Linux

Warez spammers discover Linux

Warez spammers discover Linux 08/12/2004 09:25 AM

We Linux users have probably gotten a collective total of at least 32 trillion pieces of spam email trying to sell us Windows warez. But until now, we were always frozen out of these bargains. Unless we ran CrossOver Office, what did we need with a pirated copy of Photoshop or Microsoft Office? (Not only that, most of us use free, open source alternatives anyway.) But now we have arrived. There is finally enough commercial software for Linux that the pirates and warez spammers want our business, too.

It looks like the various spam laws that help legalize spam are making the spammers extra litigious. Following a lawsuit in the US by a spammer against an anti-spam operation for still block their email, some spammers in the UK are threatening Spamhaus with lawsuits for still having them on their blacklist. The problem is that, just because the law now gives them the permission to spam, it doesn't mean people aren't allowed to make their own private efforts to block them. The laws may allow them to send their spam, but there's nothing in these laws that require people to receive it.

After the FBI raid five pople's homes (and the offices of one ISP) seizing their equipment for operating a "network" sharing the equivalent of 60,000 movies or 10.5 million songs (according to Mr Ashcroft) as part of Operation Digital Gridlock's attempts to crack the "organisation" known as The Underground Network (and perhaps to rail against the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals' recent decision backing up the legality of P2P networks) one of those raided - "The Answer Man" - contacts P2Pnet, to give the inside scoop and talk about the distortions created by the media reporting of the case. Cory Doctorow: Bram Cohen, the creator of BitTorrent, notes, "I'd like to point out that although a number of very large BitTorrent-based web sites have been taken down recently, downloads of BitTorrent have only gone down slightly. There's a widespread belief that BitTorrent is used almost exclusively for warez, probably a perception of people who themselves use it almost exclusively for warez, but that impression is simply untrue." An update to the earlier story we had on a schoo ls being raided by the FBI for sharing music files, here's the news on a larger FBI operation to shut down a larger software, music and movies warez group. This makes more sense than just going after file sharing, but it still makes you wonder. There is this huge terrorist threat thing going on right now, and you would think that it might make more sense for the FBI to protect us from being blown up than to worry about people sharing music files that they can probably get on file sharing networks anyway.

Cellphone Warez Has Hidden SMS Dialer 08/09/2004 09:46 AM

trojan-mosquitos.jpg imageA cracked version of the popular "Mosquito v2.0" game for Symbian phones has turned out to include a special trojan payload: a dialer that sends a text message to the UK number 87140 with a charge of £1.50 (about $2.75) a pop. So yeah, that sucks, but you shouldn't be downloading phone warez, either.

Fortunately, if you're one of the unlucky ones who has been stung by the malware, removing it appears to be as simple as deleting the offending file. And while this is notable, and a little bit scary, maybe it should be a sign to mobile OS developers to start locking down the dialing functions of their phones a little more securely?

Major DoJ warez crackdown -- Operation
Fastlink
04/22/2004 04:08 PM
Covert DoJ investigations into online swapping of copyrighted materials have identified over 100 people in the USA and other countries involved in the distribution of music, movies, and software valued at over $50 million. The initiative is called Operation Fastlink, and targeted warez groups like Fairlight, Kalisto, Echelon, Class and Project X. Excerpt from DoJ press release:
Attorney General John Ashcroft announced today the most far-reaching and aggressive enforcement action ever undertaken against organizations involved in illegal intellectual property piracy over the Internet. Beginning yesterday morning, law enforcement from 10 countries and the United States conducted over 120 searches worldwide to dismantle some of the most well-known and prolific online piracy organizations.

"Intellectual property theft is a global problem that hurts economies around the world. To be effective, we must respond globally," Attorney General Ashcroft said. "In the past 24 hours, working closely with our foreign law enforcement counterparts, we have moved aggressively to strike at the very core of the international online piracy world."

The NYT has run a goofy Red-scare piece on Internet Relay Chat, with hysterical, alarmist bushwah like "It is still possible - though sometimes a bit difficult - to find mature technical discussions among the tens of thousands of I.R.C. chat rooms" -- I mean, how "difficult" is it to type "/join #unix"?
When I.R.C. started in the 1980's, it was best known as a way for serious computer professionals worldwide to communicate in real time. It is still possible - though sometimes a bit difficult - to find mature technical discussions among the tens of thousands of I.R.C. chat rooms, known as channels, operating at any one time. There are also respectable I.R.C. systems and channels - some operated by universities or Internet service providers - for gamers seeking opponents or those who want to talk about sports or hobbies.

Still, I.R.C. perhaps most closely resembles the cantina scene in "Star Wars'': a louche hangout of digital smugglers, pirates, curiosity seekers and the people who love them (or hunt them). There seem to be I.R.C. channels dedicated to every sexual fetish, and I.R.C. users speculate that terrorists also use the networks to communicate in relative obscurity. Yet I.R.C. has its advocates, who point to its legitimate uses.

Micorosft, AOL Discover That The
Internet Isn't TV
04/11/2005 11:42 PM
While some in the media and tech worlds are trying to turn the internet into television so they'd have more control, it appears that Microsoft and AOL are finally realizing that the two act quite differently. While both companies should have realized this years ago, it only cost them a few million dollars each to realize that there's absolutely no benefit to signing deals with Major League Baseball to allow MLB content to be streamed on their sites. Apparently both have cut short multi-million deals with MLB Online after realizing that most people simply went straight to the mlb.com site anyway, and there was almost no benefit at all to paying millions of dollars to have the identical content hosted within their own gardens since surfers don't distinguish. They know they can go wherever they want online, so why would they look for MLB content on AOL or MSN rather than just going straight to MLB? Apparently ESPN (owned by Disney) hasn't realized this, because they're about to make the same mistake and shell out millions to MLB for the privilege of mirroring the same content. Meanwhile, AOL is recognizing that their money and effort is better spent building up baseball fantasy league offerings where users actually participate, communicate and interact with each other (what the internet is good for!). Of course, what's unclear is whether or not the folks at MLB.com (the same people who said they owned all data and facts associated with MLB games) realize this, because if this sort of cash is part of their expected revenues going forward, someone may want to inform their poten tial investors of trouble ahead.

Whither TopStyle?

Whither TopStyle? 04/23/2004 12:05 PM

I've had a number of questions lately concerning the future of TopStyle, which is understandable given that it's been a year since TopStyle was updated.

The short answer: TopStyle will certainly be updated. Even though FeedDemon is getting more attention these days (since it's new), the truth is that TopStyle sells more copies. And besides, I use TopStyle every day to maintain my site - so even if sales dried up, I'd keep it updated for my own use!

So why has it been so long since an update? My recen t surgery aside, the biggest reason for the delay is that I spent several months working on TopStyle 4.0, and it was a disaster. The primary features I worked on were these:

  • Scripting (automation) through an exposed object model
  • Unicode support in the editor
  • Collapsible code sections
  • Extensible syntax highlighting and code completion for PHP and ASP
  • Extensible palette of snippets
  • Completely redesigned projects
Each of these features had been requested many times by customers, so I wanted to add all of them to version 4.0. Unfortunately, every one of these features - especially Unicode support - required making huge changes to TopStyle's foundation. Adding them all at once to the existing code base was too much, and resulted in a ungodly mess of code that even I couldn't use, let alone hand over to paying customers. In short, my first attempt at TopStyle Pro 4.0 was a failure.

So what now? Well, once I return to work I plan to continue development of FeedDemon 1.10 in parallel with TopStyle Pro 3.11, which will be a free upgrade from the current version. As the version number suggests, 3.11 will be primarily a bug-fix release. Once that's out the door, I'll start over with version 4.0, only this time with a more manageable set of improvements.

In the meantime, I'm just cocky enough to point out that despite the long delay, other web authoring tools are still playing catch-up with TopStyle Pro 3.10 even though it's over a year old :)

The first beta of TopStyle Pro 3.12 is now available to registered TopStyle customers. My apologies for taking so long to get this beta out - I had intended to release it a couple of months ago, but needed to delay it until the acquisition by NewsGator was completed.

Note that feedback on this beta should be posted in the TopStyle 3.12 BETA forum on NewsGator's site, so you'll need to register in NewsGator's forums to gain access. We had hoped we could simply import forum members from my site so that registration wouldn't be necessary, but unfortunately this turned out not to be possible.

Enjoy :)

TopStyle 3.12 in the Works

TopStyle 3.12 in the Works 03/14/2005 06:24 PM

I hadn't planned to release a new version of TopStyle so soon after coming out with versi on 3.11, but I've decided that one is necessary to resolve a few remaining bugs (including this one).

It will be a few weeks before I'm ready to post a beta of TopStyle 3.12, so it's too early for me to state exactly what will be in the new version. But among the other issues I'll address is the oft-reported problem of Mozilla "swallowing" the focus away from TopStyle's editor (describe d here). Although this bug is actually in Mozilla rather than in TopStyle itself, I'm assuming that it will never be corrected in Mozilla (after all, the Bugzilla report of this problem has existed for almost two years), so I'm going to code a workaro und in TopStyle.

The beta will be available only to existing TopStyle customers, and will be announced here when it's ready.
