iTunes And Windows XP SP 2

iTunes And Windows XP SP 2

iTunes And Windows XP SP 2 08/12/2004 09:21 AM

Conspir acy theory from a MacDailyNews reader: Microsoft is starting an online music service. Microsoft releases an update to Windows. Their largest competitor's software no longer works. Raise your hand if this is a shock to you.
iTunes didn't "no longer works." What happened is that the firewall in Windows is warning the user that, hey, iTunes is sending out and receiving data into your computer. If you trust iTunes and Apple, then just press this "OK" button to allow the network traffic.
Which is precisely the correct behavior of a firewall. If Microsoft's firewall didn't do this, I'd say that Microsoft has failed in SP2.
One have to remember that there are quite a bit of network traffic for iTunes: Rendezvous. (This is what iTunes is using to share music, and find other users that are sharing music.)
Sorry, but if you are going to post in a forum accusing Microsoft (or any other companies) of doing illegal things, firstly, get your facts straight.

iTunes 4 Windows 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
Hell has indeed frozen over - Apple have made iTunes 4.1 available to Windows users. It's building up to an interesting time in the music sharing sphere (?!). As competition to the iTunes Music Store, Dell and Napster are also rolling out their own music sharing services within the next few weeks. It'll be interesting to see how iTunes is received within the Wintel crowd. I'm confident that the product speaks for itself - the only problem might be making enough Window's users aware of it. There may also be a negative effect simply resulting from it being an Apple product, though the reverse of this argument doesn't hold when you take into account the popularity of Microsoft software on the Mac (Outlook, Word, Excel etc.).

The Many Faces Of iTunes For Windows

The Many Faces Of iTunes For Windows 12/22/2004 01:13 AM

Microsoft Windows have a philosophy, it seems, to offer one thousand and one UI choices to do any single thing. This may not be the best UI implementation, but, hey, it's interesting that Apple's iTunes is taking this philosphy to heart.

On the Mac, you can show iTunes as a full-fledge window, as a mini-window, or hide the iTunes window.

On Windows, here's what you can do...

1) Display as a full-fledge window, just like the Macintosh version.

2) Display as a mini-window, just like the Macintosh version.

3) Minimize the window, so that it appears as a button on your task bar.

4) Also show the iTunes icon on the system tray, so that you can right-click on it to access common iTunes menu items. (To enable this option, open the preference dialog, choose "Advanced", and select "Show iTunes icon in system tray." Now, minimize the iTunes windows.)

5) Show the iTunes icon on the system tray, but don't show the iTunes button on the task bar. (To enable this option, open the preference dialog, choose "Advanced", and select both "Show iTunes icon in the system tray" and "Minimize iTunes window to system tray." Now, minimize the iTunes windows.)

6) Don't show the iTunes icon on the system tray and don't show the iTunes button on the task bar. Instead, show a mini-mini player on the task bar itself. (To enable this option, open the preference dialog, choose "Advanced", and unselect "Show iTunes icon in the system tray." Right click on an empty area of your task bar, select the "Toolbars" sub-menu, and then select the "iTunes" menu item. Now, minimize the iTunes window.)

If Sony supports the DRM schemes from Apple and Microsoft, the NAS-CZ1 will be the first device I can recall that is able to play both types of DRM-locked music. Of course, they could just be talking about streaming unencumbered media files—we don't even have a proper list of specifications or price yet. (Thanks, Matthew!)

Now that Apple is offering iTunes software and access to its music store to Windows users, the company has a significant opportunity to increase its marketshare of downloadable music.
