GM plants change color in the presence of landmines.
The genetically modified weed has been coded to change color when its roots come in contact with nitrogen-dioxide (NO2) evaporating from explosives buried in soil.

Within three to six weeks from being sowed over land mine infested areas the small plant, a Thale Cress, will turn a warning red whenever close to a land mine.

Canadians Are Less Stingy 12/19/2003 07:34 PM
A recent study shows that 10 percent of Canadians use hotspots. That rate jumps to 17 percent for the 18 to 34 year old age bracket. Canadians also say they prefer to pay a flat monthly fee of around $25 rather then by the day or the hour. Only 2 percent thought access should be free. Another recent study amongst Americans showed that the vast majority of Wi-Fi users choose a free hotspot over one that charges for access. Decima Research did the study but I couldn't find details on its site....

Radio guy Tod Maffin just wrote up an impending redraft of Canadian copyright law. If this turns into a futile attempt to shore up failed business models by forcing the development of user-unfriendly technology, I’m not going to take it lying down. Other places to look are Michael Geist’s site and the Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic, which he founded. Canadians, please take note and get in the loop. With a minority government in Ottawa, we may even get some leverage.

Canadians Can't Tax iPods... For Now

Canadians Can't Tax iPods... For Now 12/19/2004 03:47 PM
Almost exactly a year ago, Canada started taxing MP3 players. They had already been taxing things like blank CDs as a sort of "tax to cover unauthorized music copying" and the idea was to extend it to MP3 players... even for those who were using the players for completely legitimate purposes. Now, a Canadian Court has ruled that this tax is illegal. The reasoning is basically that the wording of Canada's Copyright Act clearly doesn't cover things like MP3 players. What this really means is that Canadian politicians are likely to change that law soon. If anything, certain Canadian politicians will probably use this as an opportunity to try to make the law much more entertainment industry friendly.

Canadian-funded research should be
available to Canadians

Canadian-funded research should be
available to Canadians
09/27/2004 07:12 AM
Cory Doctorow: Writing in the Toronto Star, Michael Geist argues that when Canada gives public money to scientific researchers, that it should require that the research be made available to the public through open-content publishing, rather than locked up in expensive journals that require Canadians to buy the research they've already paid for.
Late last month, a group of Nobel prize winners in the United States (which faces the same dilemma) issued a public letter calling on their government to link public research funding with public dissemination of the results. Canada should jump at the chance to adopt a similar model that would tie free, public dissemination to all publicly funded research. Such an approach would still leave room to commercialize the research results, while providing Canadians with an unprecedented innovation opportunity and a more immediate return on its research granting investment.
