In my previous blog I complained about a behavior in Mozilla where overflow:hidden on the body element is actually applied to the viewport rather than to the body element itself. This is done even in strict mode.

I thought this was a quirk, but then Ian Hickson pointed me to this section in the CSS2.1 specification. It contains the following highlighted green text (presumably this means a proposed change to CSS2).

"HTML UAs may apply the overflow property from the BODY or HTML elements to the viewport."

I think this is ridiculous on several levels. First of all, the language says HTML UAs, which means XHTML UAs are not allowed to do this. So the CSS spec is in effect implying that this quirky behavior in HTML UAs is acceptable by adding this sentence.

I also fail to see the point of using language like "may" when WinIE and Mozilla both implement this quirk. It's obvious that browser makers have no choice but to do this for HTML in order to be compatible with WinIE.

I don't see why the spec should be amended to condone this obviously quirky behavior, especially if it isn't going to apply for XHTML.

Google is dying: I think the title of this bit may be a little dramatic, but the author points out an interesting phenomenon with Google pages lately.

On sites with more than a few thousand pages, Google is not indexing anywhere from ten percent to seventy percent of the pages it knows about. These pages show up in Google's main index as a listing of the URL, which means that the Googlebot is aware of the page. But they do not show up as an indexed page.

When the page is listed but not indexed, the only way to find it in a search is if your search terms hit on words in the URL itself. Even if they do hit, these listed pages rank so poorly compared to indexed pages, that they are almost invisible. This is true even though the listed pages still retain their usual PageRank. [...]

Google is dying. It broke sixteen months ago and hasn't been fixed. It looks to me as if pages that have been noted by the crawler cannot be indexed until some other indexed page gives up its docID number.

World's first civilian space shot launches from Mojave Desert: No confirmmation on their altitude yet, but everyone is home safely.

SpaceShipOne pilot Mike Melvill was aiming to fly 62 miles above the Earth's surface. The exact altitude reached was not immediately confirmed by radar.

The ship touched down at Mojave Airport to applause and cheers at 8:15 a.m. PT, about 90 minutes after it was carried aloft slung under the belly of the jet-powered White Knight.

The mission announcer said the mission had been successful.

New Scientist says that the Second Mars rover, Opportunity, has landed successfully on geologist's dream location on Mars. Nasa is two for two with the previous rover Spirit landing successfully! Although, there is less fanfair, Opportunity is already pleasing the masses by sending back great photos of Mars' surface. Unfortunately, the Spirit rover has already stopped communicating. Hopefully, Opportunity will last longer. ESA's Beagle never did respond, and Japan's Nazomi was directed away from Mars. Perhaps in the future, according to Bush's plan we may someday have humans on Mars.
