05/10/2004 07:10 AMSo it's been a little while since something has sucker punched me
right in lust gland, but good job Sony for sneaking this gorgeous new
Vaio VGN-U70 tablet hybrid PC onto the scene. The U70 isn't an
official Tablet PC, but operates without a keyboard most of the time,

Tight Systems has 'The Secret Store,' where they
sell things like the DVX-POD to keep their head above water as they
try to develop the TAZI media player (hint: it's not that secret).
Well they somehow got a hold of a box of U2-edition iPods that they're
going to sell at $250 a pop—$100 cheaper than they go from
Apple. Since iPods are in such short supply this week, I thought it
might be something that you're interested in. Bear in mind, only 10
people a day can buy them, and you have to be subscribed to their
newsletter/spam list, but it's a better shot than you've got going to
Best Buy or something. (Thanks, Steve!)

The Race To Catch The iPod
07/23/2004 12:47 PMApple's portable iPod music player has revolutionised the way in which
music is delivered to consumers. However, as Apple launches its iPod
mini worldwide, the brand is under attack on two fronts: from copycat
products from the likes of Sony, and from subscription services, which
will soon be helped by software from Microsoft. By The Economist (via

Will WiFi Phones Catch On?
Will WiFi Phones Catch On?
05/10/2004 05:49 AMThe press is finally catching on to
the concept of Voice over WiFi (or as
we, at Techdirt, prefer to call it: VoWiFi). This seems like an area
that is destined to go through the typical wireless hype cycle where
the press will push it like crazy, well before most people will use
it. Early offerings will be buggy and difficult to use or set up.
Also, while it sounds neat, a major stumbling block is that wireless
carriers are still quite nervous about selling any WiFi-enabled phone
- which takes away the benefit of the hybrid phone that's both a
mobile phone and a WiFi phone, depending on the available wireless
signal. Sure, it's likely that wireless VoIP will become popular at
some point, it's just not likely to catch on as quickly as the press
would have people believe.

NASA prepares to catch a falling star sample: This is
awesome. It's rare that the world of geeks and the world of action
movie stars collides so enjoyably.
To increase understanding of the sun's composition, NASA in 2001
launched the $264 million Genesis mission to collect samples from the
solar wind — electrically charged particles blown out from the
sun at up to 2 million mph. [...]
To prevent contamination and damage to the fragile silicon wafers
that collected the star dust should the Genesis capsule hit the
ground, NASA will try to snare the capsule in midair as it
descends.

Microsoft Searches for a Way to Catch Up
Microsoft Searches for a Way to Catch Up
04/01/2005 06:56 AMIn February, Microsoft released a revamped version of MSN Search, its
first search engine based on its own technology. To get the word out,
it did something you'd expect from a powerful market leader with very
deep pockets: It dipped into that $34 billion cash hoard. Spending a
reported $150 million, it blanketed network TV with fresh MSN
advertising spots during high-profile broadcasts such as the Academy
Awards, the Grammys, and the Super Bowl. The company also bought
online ads at CNET, CNN.com, Weather.com, WSJ.com, and dozens of other
heavily trafficked websites. Microsoft says the campaign has reached
as many as 90 percent of U.S. consumers and several hundred million
other people around the world. "It's one of the most significant
marketing campaigns we've ever done," boasts Justin Osmer, MSN's
product manager.
That marketing onslaught moved the needle. According to Internet
measurement firm Nielsen/NetRatings, MSN's share of the booming
search-engine market jumped in February from 12.8 percent to 14.2
percent. That gain came at the expense of market leader Google, which
saw its share fall from 47.1 percent to 45.9 percent. (Yahoo held
steady with a little more than 20 percent of the market.) MSN says its
internal numbers, for both market share and total users, also show
strong gains. And Brand Keys, a New York-based consultancy
specializing in consumer loyalty, says that while Google remains the
category leader, the company's loyalty measures have declined 4
percent since last year.
