Power Mac is "best personal computer" 11/19/2003 09:18 AM
Apple's Power Mac G5 has been named best personal computer in PC Magazine's annual Awards for Technical Excellence. Calling the machine a "dazzling display of disruptive technology and processor independence," PC Magazine cites backward compatibility, the PCI_X slots, Firewire 800 and USB 2.0, and innovative, effective and quiet heat management as major reasons for giving the Power Mac the title. Performance was also a major contributor. "The G5 performed significantly...

AMD's Computer Chip Power Play 03/20/2003 01:05 PM
It is tempting to look at the numbers and dismiss the notion that chipmaker AMD could ever challenge Intel. According to market research firm Gartner Dataquest, at the end of 2001 Intel controlled 78.7 percent share of the PC processor market. But the smaller company could be narrowing the gap.

Andy Rooney Yells At Bill Gates For
Computer Power Button Placement

Andy Rooney Yells At Bill Gates For
Computer Power Button Placement
11/17/2003 02:06 AM
Andy Rooney is known for complaining. That's his schtick. He's not known for always getting the complaint right, however. In his latest set of complaints he's blaming Bill Gates for making his computer suck. He might be completely right on that front... However, he has two specific complaints and one of them has absolutely nothing to do with Microsoft of Bill Gates. He complains that the power button on every computer he's bought has been in a different spot. That may be true, but it's certainly not Bill's fault. His second complaint is an old joke that has been forwarded around by email for ages, about how odd it is that you need to press the "start" button to "shut down". He does have one good quote concerning the fact that you need to keep buying new computers, while typewriters would last forever: "I had one typewriter for 50 years, but I've bought seven computers in six years. I suppose that's why Bill Gates is rich and Underwood is out of business."

Blogging the climate

Blogging the climate 12/31/2004 12:46 PM
RealClimate.org defines its purpose this way: RealClimate is a commentary site on climate science by working climate scientists for the interested public and journalists. We aim to provide a quick response to developing stories and provide the context sometimes missing in mainstream commentary. The discussion here is restricted to scientific topics and will not get involved in any political or economic implications of the science. Inevitably, because this is a blog with a voice and a point of view, the discussion is far from dry, with entries such as these: George Will-misled and misleadingHow do we know that recent CO2...

Bush's climate-change Lysenkoism

Bush's climate-change Lysenkoism 06/09/2004 01:52 PM
Sterling's latest Wired column is a good comparison of the government-mandated pseudoscience in the Bush climate policy and the "totalitarian hucksterism" of Trofim Lysenko, Salin's number-one bad-science guy.
Presidential science adviser John Marburger complained that the UCS's account sounded like a "conspiracy theory report." That's because it is one. As the report amply documents, the Bush administration has systematically manipulated scientific inquiry into climate change, forest management, lead and mercury contamination, and a host of other issues. Even as Marburger addressed his critics, the administration purged two advocates of stem-cell research from the President's Council on Bioethics.

When politicians dictate science, government becomes entangled in its own deceptions, and eventually the social order decays in a compost of lies. Society, having abandoned the scientific method, loses its empirical referent, and truth becomes relative. This is a serious affliction known as Lysenkoism.
