07/27/2004 04:32 PMWe mentioned the
non-surprisi
ng, non-groundbreaking nature of Motorola's expected announcement
concerning a WiFi-enabled mobile phone last week when the company
conveniently leaked the info they'd first announced a year and a half
ago. Now, after pumping up the PR efforts, it seems that everyone is
writing about this WiFi-cellular phone, without bothering to look at
the details. However, looking at those details make the phone
appear... not that interesting. It's really a
very limited device that can only be used with special 802.11a
hardware. So, don't think you'll be using the phone at Wi-Fi
hotspots any time soon. This is really just a gimmick to try to sell
a new mobile phone to business users.

The Myth of Seamless Integration
The Myth of Seamless Integration
03/14/2003 01:28 AMIntegration of enterprise applications is not a pretty process.
Despite all the tech advances of recent years, it is still costly and
time-consuming, with a less than stellar return on investment. But a
new era is upon us, enterprise software developers say, and the
monolithic integration problems of the 1990s soon will crumble into
dust.

Near-Seamless Handoff for 802.11 Roaming
Near-Seamless Handoff for 802.11 Roaming
04/14/2005 10:03 AMTwo University of California San Diego scientists have developed a
better way of seamlessly handing off 802.11 roaming, making it
possible for people from one hotspot to another without dropping
connections. That's important not so much for data, which can handle a
dropped packet here and there, but for streaming audio, video, and
voice-over-IP.
The SyncScan solution proposed by Savage and
Ramani is a method to continuously monitor the proximity of nearby
802.11 access points. Instead of looking for surrounding access points
just when the current signal is running low, a Wi-Fi device with
SyncScan regularly checks signal strengths nearby -- but only for very
short periods of time. These times are picked to precisely coincide
with regularly scheduled "beacon" messages sent by all standard Wi-Fi
access points. The process eliminates the current need to start from
scratch when looking for a stronger signal, and replaces the long
scanning delay with many small delays that are imperceptible to the
user.

01/28/2004 10:17 AMMicrosoft founder Bill Gates expressed his vision Wednesday for a
future in which advanced software will seamlessly connect personal
computers with mobile phones, watches and other small devices. The

decade, would also be smart enough to let users know if and when it
should alert them -- and on which device -- with new information such
as weather forecasts or sports scores.

So I
almost skimmed past this while reading a rumor about the MPx (that
I'll talk about after the jump), but boy, I'm glad I didn't. According
to information gleamed from the FCC site, Motorola's new CN620
clamshell is coming to town, and by town I mean 'the town where you
can transfer Wi-Fi Voice-Over-IP calls to GSM, also known as
Awesomeville.' The quad-band GSM phone supports all three major Wi-Fi
standards and is targeted towards corporate users.
Our sources at Motorola said to expect an official announcement
later this month.

03/17/2005 03:45 AMSuccessFactors today announced via a news release over US BusinessWire
that the company successfully completed a software implementation at
MasterCard International in a record-setting, two weeks time. In
addition, SuccessFactors also provided MasterCard's 4000 worldwide
employees with a seamless shift to our software while simultaneously
reducing performance review-related help desk calls by approximately
25%. - Prior to SuccessFactors, MasterCard was using a workforce
performance management technology that was severely limited in
functionality. Specifically, there was limited reporting
functionality, minimal visibility into each employees' performance
history and multiple forms used across their worldwide organization
that were unable to be tracked within one system.SuccessFactors was
selected to unify the multiple HRMS systems in use at MasterCard,
streamline the peformance management process and begin shifting HR's
role away from a transactional agent to a more strategic partner
driving business at the executive level. The decision to implement
SuccessFactors technology was weighted heavily on the company's ASP
business model, expansive reporting tools and ability to function as a
business partner. [PRWEB Mar 15, 2005]

Microsoft Announces Windows Media
Connect Technology, Enabling Seamless
Media Transfer Between Windows XP-Based
PCs and Consumer Electronics Devices
01/08/2004 07:36 PMToday at the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES),
Microsoft Corp. announced Windows® Media Connect, technology designed
to enable hardware manufacturers to easily develop devices such as
Digital Media Receivers (DMRs), which have rich functionality for
playing digital media files stored on personal computers over home
networks. A broad range of industry leaders have announced their
support of this upcoming technology, including leading PC OEMs and
consumer electronics device manufacturers including Arcadyan
Technology Corp., Creative Labs, Dell Inc., Mediabolic Inc., PRISMIQ
Inc., Rockford Corp., Roku, Simple Devices Inc. and Toshiba. Leading
content service providers such as LAUNCH Music on Yahoo!, MusicNow
(formerly FullAudio), and Napster also endorsed Windows Media Connect
for its ability to extend the reach of their content and services to a
new range of consumer devices. Available in 2004, Windows Media
Connect technology will overcome two critical hurdles faced by
networked media devices today: compatibility between proprietary
devices and ease of access to content stored on the PC.
