David Pescovitz:
The Data Fountain is an ambient display that translates streaming
currency rates to streams of water. From Koert van Mensvoort's
description of the project:
"In the morning
paper, I can read the weather report as well as the stock quotes. But
when I look out of my window I only get a weather update and no stock
exchange info. Could someone please fix this bug in my environmental
system? Thanks."

Of course, the Data Fountain comes six years after pervasive computing

Want built a fountain at Xerox PARC that trickled or gushed based
on the company's stock price.

Recording Industry Thinks The UK Doesn't
Understand Exchange Rates
05/20/2004 01:05 PMWe've already had stories about how the recording industry is looking
for any possible way to
raise
prices on digital downloads (showing just how little they
understand the concept of an emerging market), and now we find out
that the standard $1 price is really more for marketing reasons. Now
that Napster has launched in the UK, they seem to think that it's a
good idea to use the "1 standard unit of currency" as the main price -
probably because it looks better in advertisements. So, in the US, a
track is $1.
In the UK
it's £1. Now, while the recording industry couldn't be
bothered, most users understand exchange rates, and realize that
£1 = ~ $1.77 (with some fluctuations). In other words, for the
sake of being able to use the "1 standard unit of currency" pricing,
the recording industry gets to nearly double the price in the UK.
This doesn't seem likely to encourage much adoption - but may
encourage plenty of resentment. Of course, by this point, it appears
the recording industry thrives on resentment.

Historical origins of obesity
Historical origins of obesity
05/27/2004 02:52 AMLong, interesting Harvard Magazine article about the historical shifts
in diet and lifestyle that led to America's obesity epidemic.
"We are not adapted to handle fast-acting carbohydrates," Ludwig
continues. "Glucose is the gold standard of energy metabolism. The
brain is exquisitely dependent on having a continuous supply of
glucose: too low a glucose level poses an immediate threat to
survival. [But] too high a level causes damage to tissues, as with
diabetes. The body is designed to keep blood glucose within a tight
range, and it does this beautifully, even with extreme nutrient
ratios: we can survive indefinitely on a diet of 60 percent
carbohydrates and 20 percent fat, or 20 percent carbohydrates and 60
percent fat. But we never [before] had to assimilate a heavy dose of
high-glycemic carbohydrates."

Recreating Historical Monuments,

02/12/2004 02:16 PMI'm sure similar projects are being worked on elsewhere, but it's nice
to know that people are creating
virtual
replicas of historical monuments that let people "go back in time"
at the click of a mouse. From the article, it sounds like the team in
this case is paying great attention to detail, making sure that the
representation is as accurate as possible. While not taking away from
the value of actually visiting historical monuments, it would seem
that this makes for a nice complement for people who want to compare
what may have been with what's there today. Also, it allows people
nowhere near these historical sites to check them out.

Disneyland ride scheduler uses
historical wait-time data to cut queuing
12/27/2004 10:39 AM
Cory Doctorow:
This Win-only app uses historical wait times and a "scheduling
algorithm" to help you plan your day at Disneyland to minimize your
wait-times and maximize your rides.
RideMax allows you to specify the attractions you wish to ride during
your visit, then uses a sophisticated scheduling algorithm to order
your attractions so that the amount of time you spend in line is
minimized.
Using historical wait time statistics for each attraction as a
foundation, RideMax analyzes millions of different ride sequences in
order to create a minimum-wait-time itinerary. This schedule is
tailored to the expected crowd patterns on the day of your visit, for
the attractions you want to ride!

It's probably not going to
give you the same sort of visual fidelity of a nicer camera, but for
$230 the new AIPTEK PocketDV 4100 looks like a fun diversion, with a
4-megapixel sensor and a 1.8-inch color LCD screen. Keep in mind that
the 4100 doesn't use tapes. Instead, it has a Compact Flash slot that
supports, well, as much Compact Flash as you can afford. I suspect
that the 4-megapixel sensor is actually 4-megapixel this time, instead
of the 2-megapixel CCD that's in the SD-card-based PocketDV 4500 that
is just interpolated up to 4-megapixel. (Thanks, Mike!)

In which Tom visits PARC...
In which Tom visits PARC...
06/24/2005 09:22 PMIn what is definitely a highlight of my weirdest holiday ever,
today I got to travel to California Ave on the Caltrain and visit PARC to talk to them about my
stuff around Social Software for Set-Top Boxes and the work
that Matt Webb and I
did over the last couple of years at the BBC. It was possibly a more
exciting trip for me than it strictly should have been, I fear - I
think even I was surprised by how nerdy I turned out to be. Trevor F. Smith was looking
after me - he took a few embarrassing fanboy shots of me lurking by
the PARC sign and then gave me a bit of a tour around the floating
earthquake-secure buildings, past the self-assembly robot room and
around the back of the laser experiments suite. As you do.
Having a native nerd show me around was beyond cool. At a certain
point we ducked into a room with an enormous photocopier in it, Trevor
pulled back a little door and pointed inside. "That's the world's
first ethernet cable", he said. I'm embarrassed to say that this
got a little sincere 'oooh' noise out of me. But that was nothing
compared to when we passed the door with the 'Smart Matter' sign on
it. The door was very firmly shut, and all the windows had blinds so
you couldn't see inside, but secretly I knew they were developing Flubber. Trevor
refused to confirm or deny this speculation.
The session itself went relatively well - I got some interesting
questions about some of the work we did on Phonetags and some
useful directions to investigate in terms of more formal directions in
tagging and hypertext research. I also got to hear a bit about the
research that they've been doing, and was delighted to see that we
were coming to some very similar conclusions from very different
directions.
After our chat, Trevor was decent enough to drive me back into San
Francisco. The views along the way were completely stunning and he
took me up to pose by this really
grotesque statue of Father Junipero Serra that points out over
Crystal Springs lake. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the
pictures, but only in as much as I like to have a record of what I've
done, not because they're good pictures of me. Trevor seems to have a
particular knack for making men look like shabby balding transexuals
in his photographs. I'm not entirely sure I'll be sharing them with
the world.

a 4-megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom, 1.6-inch LCD and--in a rare
return to early digicam form--14.5MB of internal memory. The Coolpix
4100 will also take SD cards for additional storage and should be
price around $300. One thing I love about Nikon is that they tend to
release their own underwater housings for their cameras and the 4100
will be getting one, as well. Even though many 3rd party housings are
just as good or better, it's usually a lot easier to buy from the
