20,000 Leagues ride fan-site

20,000 Leagues ride fan-site 08/11/2004 12:08 PM

This incredibly exhaustive fan-site for the old Disney World 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ride was created by a die-hard who only orode the ride once, when he was three (". All I remember clearly is a porthole, a whole lotta bubbles, and OH MY GOOD GOD THERE’S A GIANT SQUID ATTACKING THAT SUBMARINE!" Now he's collected a ton of media related to the ride, including transcripts, videos, stills, and interviews with various crew-members. Link (Thanks, Caines!)

20,000 Leagues Site 08/11/2004 01:46 PM

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - The Ride: Thanks to Boing Boing for this pointer to a site devoted to the "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" ride that used to be at Disney. I rode it three or four times as a kid and loved it. Never read the book, but I understand it's a classic of science fiction.

I like sites like this. Done well, for a narrow subject, not updated — just a tribute to something that will stand forever (or until hosting fees come due...)

eBay my ride

eBay my ride 06/05/2005 10:50 PM

It's not entirely surprising to see cars from the show Pimp My Ride being sold on eBay for cash. I think this newest one makes it five or six of the featured cars that have been sold.

The show's premise is kind of flimsy: kids in SoCal in rough situations get a crazy $30k car makeover that is supposed to change their life for the better. Speaking as someone that once owned a highly customized car in Southern California, they're more trouble than they're worth, making you constantly worried about them getting stolen or broken into.

When you hear about the kids on the show, it's most often money problems, and having a playstation in your dash doesn't quite solve that, though they frequently point to improving these kids' self-esteem as some sort of benefit making the show worth it. So many end up on eBay, which will probably help these people out, so I guess the ends justify the means and we get some entertaining television out of it.

The long bike ride

The long bike ride 08/03/2004 02:44 PM
The Long Bike Ride is a cross-country charity ride (which is short of its goal, kick in a few bucks) by two guys that have never ridden a bike more than 15 miles in one sitting. They're already halfway done, having ridden 50-75 miles everyday for the past couple months, probably thanks to riding high-end ultralight recumbent bikes. Their tour updates are extensive and looking at the photos they look quite relaxed. Then I realized if you're getting your 50-75 miles done in about 4 hours, the rest of the time you can just party! party! party! Still, a pretty amazing feat to do this entire route, especially considering their lack of experience and training.
