The Manglefreuzer Switch

The Manglefreuzer Switch

The Manglefreuzer Switch 08/11/2004 11:40 AM

For everyone who has ever struggled with interm ittent problems, the truth has finally l eaked out.

...there's always the chance the mangelfreuzer switch will trip - which would be a problem."

"What's a manglef.. r."

"Manglefreuzer - as in Mangle-Froy-TSir. It's a switch or other device that hardware manufacturers put into their equipment to detect unuathorised access to a box - and makes the system act strangely."

"Strangely?"

"Yes, you know, the odd memory error, harddisk write error, machine crashes, etc. To encourage you not to tamper with the box. And generate revenue for the maintenance provider of course."

"Are you serious?!"

"Of course. Some of our major outages have been those exact same problems."

"You mean they're all caused by a manglefreuzer?"

"Some of them, yes. Obviously no sane vendor would build in something which could be conclusively linked as the source of a problem, so they make the outages sporadic and hard to track down..."

"And people know about this?"

"Technical people, yes."

"And you're ok with that?"

"We don't really have that much choice in the matter, do we? Anyway all the vendors do it - and not just in computers."

And all this time I've been blaming the problems on interference from low-flying cloaked alien spacecraft. Those PC-building dirtballs!

One Less Reason Not To Switch

One Less Reason Not To Switch 05/11/2004 01:45 PM

Novell has announced in a p ress release that they will release the Exchange Connector for Ximian Evolution, previously a $75/seat plugin, as open source.

Novell today announced its Connector for Microsoft* Exchange Server will be integrated into EvolutionTM 2.0 and made available as open source, beginning today with the current Connector 1.4. Evolution is Novell's award-winning e-mail and workgroup client for Linux* systems and is the most widely used collaboration suite on Linux. Evolution Connector allows Microsoft Exchange Server 2000/2003 users to easily manage their e-mail, calendars, group schedules, address books, public folders and tasks from Linux desktops.

I was thrilled to hear this. Evolution (particularly the current betas) is the equal of MS Outlook in features, but without many of the problems. The only downside was that you had to pony up the cash to natively connect with an Exchange server. My guess is that Novell feels that having this out there will speed the adoption of Linux, and that will provide them more revenue than they had been making by selling the plugin. A positive side effect of Ximian being purchased by Novell.

It appears that Novell has recognized their increasing irrelevance in their old niche, LAN products, and is jumping in to open source with both feet. Could this approach put them back into dominant position?

Flip-switch day

Flip-switch day 11/16/2003 08:29 PM

Lots of changes today, but ones with (Murphy-willing) very small impact on the user interface. In fact, unless they don't work, you shouldn't see any difference at all. Since this is Scripting News, and not Knitting News, we'll go ahead and say which switches got flipped.

First, www.scripting.com now resides on the east coast instead of the west. The new Monster servers, the 3GHz meat-eaters that climb skyscrapers, are now both managing the content and doing the serving for everything on scripting.com.

A
picture named kong.gifThe picture of King Kong to the right will appear when the new server is visible through DNS to your browser. If you see a broken image and want to see what the picture looks like just click on it.

Second, a big change in the way the outliner works. We used to have to tell it how to format a day of weblog posts using Rules, a great feature if you want a lot of control over how things look, but a pain in the butt if every day looks exactly like every other day, as is always true in my weblog.

Third, this is going to be a product, not one that I plan to sell (although I may give it to UserLand and they might sell it). It's a new kind of outliner-based Web CMS, that does weblogs and all the other stuff you see popping up here on Scripting. I spent much of the day exploring ideas for how to package, test and then ship this. Should it be a Manila plug-in? Or something that's linked to Manila on a sort of peer basis? Or should it be completely independent of Manila? I want to deliberate on this decision, because I expect to live with it for a long time.

Yes, But When Can I Switch Off From
Work?
04/14/2004 10:37 PM
Welcome to the modern "always on, always connected" work world. It's gotten to the point where Microsoft discovered, after handing out smart phones, tablet PCs and broadband connections to employees that they needed to give their employees special instructions on how to turn off work. This isn't a new problem, and it's certainly been discussed before. While some people can handle the work/life balance without a problem - it's not so easy for everyone else. Even for those who can switch off, it's made more difficult by their colleagues who can't - and who contact them at odd hours with work requests. This is going to become a bigger issue for modern companies to deal with. There are, obviously, some advantages, but people need to learn their limits.

Vivato's 802.11g Switch Has FCC Approval

Vivato's 802.11g Switch Has FCC Approval 04/16/2004 06:33 PM
Vivato's filings for its VP2200 802.11g switch were approved by the FCC today: Filings show the antenna has a maximum 48.1 dBi EIRP which is a measure of its effective signal strength. The VP2200's manual says that it supports receiving Power over Ethernet. The Ethernet ports are just 10/100 Mbps, not gigabit Ethernet, which is slightly surprising. It appears to have six separately configurable wireless interfaces, each of which can be set to a unique channel or which can be set in multiples to the same channel. The VP2200's manual also shows the full command-line interface, including configuring multiple VLANs, but makes no mention of WPA at all, only WEP and 802.1X/EAP. You can review Vivato's exhibits here, including the tentative user manual and photos of the unit's internal and external parts....

Colubris Supports Voice

Colubris Supports Voice 05/10/2004 05:35 PM
Colubris Networks, the maker of fat APs, introduced support for voice over Wi-Fi: The new system will support SpectraLink's voice over Wi-Fi solution. Colubris is touting its ability to isolate voice and data services so that each can have its own security parameters and quality of service profiles. The company says that previously companies would have to either resort to the lowest common level of security or deploy separate networks for each application. However, a number of WLAN switch vendors support voice and enable the separation of traffic based on the application. Voice traffic is often treated differently than data traffic because most voice over Wi-Fi handsets don't support VPNs. Enterprises that want to secure data transmissions using VPNs must treat that traffic differently than voice traffic....

Colubris Challenges Switch Vendors

Colubris Challenges Switch Vendors 01/22/2004 02:13 AM
Colubris has come out with a new generation of products that it says work better than a wireless LAN switch platform: The new system consists of a fat AP coupled with a central management console for configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting. Colubris says its architecture can be installed for one-third less cost than WLAN switch platforms. STSN may agree because it will add Colubris' access points to the list of gear it uses to build hotspots in hotels and conference centers. Colubris' access points have embedded VPN servers and come 802.11i-ready. While the WLAN switch makers like to say that the fat AP vs. thin AP debate is over and the thin AP has won, that's really not so. There are good reasons to put some intelligence at the AP to save on the backhaul required for communication between a thin AP and a backend switch. Ultimately both types of architectures may survive, each serving different groups of customers....

Vivato has an interim CEO but is looking for a permenant leader. The spotlight fell on Vivato when it laid off 34 workers starting in the summer. Biba's resignation as CEO encouraged speculation that there was trouble at the company. Vivato has 54 customers. The interim CEO says, in this article, that Vivato doesn't come up against much competition as it chases university customers. That's very funny as I know of a handful of other switch or gateway makers that have university customers. Vivato has plenty of competition for university customers. Vivato Deploys at Lincoln University

Vivato Deploys at Lincoln University 11/03/2003 02:35 PM
Vivato's switches save years and dollars at university: This installation would have been challenging for conventional wireless LANs, the press release notes, because the university spans many buildings across 400 acres. Many of the 40 buildings are historic, which probably translates into "no wiring closets" and an aging electrical physical plant. The backstory of a press release like this is that Vivato finds it necessary to promote the installation of their equipment at institutions with unique characteristics rather than announcing the sale of their gear to Fortune 5000 companies or wireless ISPs....

Vivato's equipment will be used by ICOA to provide Wi-Fi service at the Spokane airport: The airport handles about 1.2 million passengers (counted once for enplanement/deplanement) per year. ICOA seems to be specializing in smaller but high-volume airports like Sacramento, Savannah/Hilton Head, and Fresno that require very little hardware but reach a million or more passengers a year. Extrapolating from Concourse's figures for usage at Minneapolis-St. Paul, these smaller airports should see 20 to 30 sessions per day....

Sometimes it sucks to be a Geek

Sometimes it sucks to be a Geek 09/20/2004 02:53 AM

My wife and I went to a work related party last night which turned out to be pretty boring. So much for the $70.00 spent on tickets. We left early and knew that the sitter was good to go decided to drop in on a friend of hers.

We get to her house and I am admiring her house and see a big Master Degree in Education hanging over her computer. I was surprised to see it actually as we have known her for a while and she had never mentioned it. Anyway to make a long story short she says hey my PC is having problems can you look at it.

You guessed it 2 hours later and much under breath cursing I give up and tell her I need to take it home or we can just pull the restore disk out and start from scratch. I get this deer in the headlights look when I explain that her computer has been hijacked and is infected with nearly every piece of spyware known to man.

1. Virus Definitions 2 years old
2. She had never run Windows Update.
3. Systems is plugged directly into cable modem
4. No Spyware detection software
5. No Firewall

Remember now she has a Masters Degree in Education. She commented I should open a business and fix peoples computers like hers. I guess my 21+ years working with advanced electronics now makes me qualified to fix computers. I suppose I could charge her $750.00 for a days worth of work. All I could do was smile and say drop it by the house and I will get it fixed for you...

All my wife could say when we left was sorry. I hate stupid educated people. Sometimes being a geek sucks.

Unconstitutional? Maybe. But not sufficiently so for the NY ACLU to say much anything about it. Maybe the Judge could have recommended the same sex-ed scheme that shows, in parts of England and Wales where it [called A Pause] was trialled in 104 schools, sexual intercourse among 16-year-olds fell by up to 20 per cent. Now that may mean we have to have more discussion of oral and manual, with less genital-genital emphasis. Anything that promotes the right to say 'no' amongst vulnerable young folks is alright by me.

How do I turn on the screensaver with a key combination!?! I don't want to use the hot corners (I already have them overloaded with Exposé and I want to have the top left corner free so I don't have to worry about counting pixels when I try and access the Apple menu), but so far the best way to lock the Powerbook is to go and turn the lid down and then back up again. which turns on the screen saver (and stops iTunes, BTW, since the computer goes to sleep for a second).

I know there are Mac people reading me, so please: tell me which key combination I have to use, or which freeware application I have to install to just be able to press Apple-F12 to lock the computer! I've been trying to find the info from Google, but apparently I haven't been able to figure out the right keywords.

Frustrated now!

(Sorry for the headline, just wanted to grab your attention there. My Mac Powerbook does NOT suck, it is a wonderful little machine and I grow more attached to it every day. It is by far the best computer I've ever owned. I just need this one thing to make it perfect. Please?)
