02/01/2005 08:20 PMWe've been looking at predictions for what's going to happen in the
identity management area in 2005, and the returns from Nova Scotia are
now in (hey, it's winter up in the Maritime provinces and it takes
longer to get to the mail box!). Abridean CTO Greg O'Malley has
chipped in with what his crystal ball is showing for the near future.
Among the things O'Malley sees happening this year:

Digital Performer 4.51 available for download. This upgrade to the
MIDI and audio sequencer adds performance improvements as well as some
new features, including dynamic CPU management, which disables
processing for plug-ins when they're idle, saving processor cycles for
use by the application. Digital Performer 4.51 also enables saving of
bounce-to-disk settings and adds a new location number column to the
Marker window for quicker marker access.

policy-based mgmt. via Windows
09/24/2004 03:41 AMA couple of months ago I enthused (some might say "gushed") about
Vintela Authentication Services, which enables you to efficiently -
and securely - manage a single logon/password for Unix, Linux and
Windows applications. In essence, it integrates the Unix and Linux
platforms into Windows' Active Directory. The boys in Linden, Utah
didn't rest on their laurels very long, though. Just last week came
the announcement of a new add-on to VAS - Vintela Group Policy, which
provides a framework for Unix and Linux policy-based management
through the Windows Group Policy system. All integrated, of course,
through Active Directory.

Vintela enables single logon, password
mgmt. for Unix, Linux and Windows
07/28/2004 04:30 AMYou've got a smooth running Windows network. Now some exec decides
that a Unix/Linux application has to be brought in as a
business-critical platform. Not that they know it's a Unix/Linux app,
just that they went to a conference and someone told them (or they saw
a presentation) and it was just the application your organization
needs to achieve some corporate goal. It just happens to only run on
Solaris or Red Hat or SuSE or AIX. You know that it's fruitless to
argue that introducing a non-Windows box will create some management
issues, some technical issues and, possibly, some security issues. The
only answer you'd get would be a directive to solve the issues.

04/09/2004 04:03 PMAs noted
earlier, a pinched nerve in my neck is making it very hard for me
to type - in fact, for the past several days I haven't been able to
type for more than five minutes at a time. Somehow, though, I'm
almost caught up with my email, but many questions in the support
newsgroups remain unanswered. I hope to handle them all this week,
but it all depends on how much longer it takes to recover.
I've been seeing a physical therapist for a few weeks, but the
results haven't been good so tomorrow I'm visiting a chiropractor for
the first time in my life. Wish me luck :)

Catching up with Harry
Catching up with Harry
02/17/2004 11:57 PMI'm not sure how I missed this, but Harry Fueck's new book The PHP Anthology
was published by SitePoint back in December, as a hefty 2 volume epic.
Harry is the guru behind PHP
Patterns and really knows his stuff. While the book is at
first glance a cookbook for solving web related problems, Harry also
uses it as a
platform for teaching sensible development practises:
Between the lines I've focused on teaching OOP by example, partly
by developing classes in the book and also by taking advantage of Open
Source class libraries I'm familiar with; in most cases projects from
PEAR.
That's also where I'd say The PHP Anthology is unique, in it aims
to get readers to avoid re-inventing wheels already done many times in
PHP. Although many of the subjects have been seen before (often
online), the focus here is either to use an Open Source class library
or put one together, solving a problem once and for all, as opposed a
hacked script that goes half way.
Sample chapters from the books are available online, including an
excellent
explanation of caching techniques. Harry is also one of my
co-bloggers over at SitePoint where he writes about (you guessed it)
PHP in Dynamically Typed.
