police state
I
've been browsing, with great unease, some of the neocon sites discussing what they should do after the upcoming US election.

One of the most frightening thing about Bush's first term has been his massive deregulation by deliberate neglect -- simply ignoring and not enforcing social and environmental laws and regulations put in place by previous administrations, giving carte blanche to corporations and security forces to simply ignore existing laws with impunity. This is easily accomplished by starving the authorities and agencies responsible for enforcing these laws of budget and information, and by putting zealous hands-off neocons in charge of them.

All this is likely to change, one way or another, after the November US elections. If Kerry wins, which is looking increasingly unlikely, the corporations will have to deploy their armies of lawyers to entrench the de facto deregulations and discourage the 're-enforcement' of social and environmental laws. The strategy for this would appear to be to argue that what Bush giveth away, rightly or wrongly, Kerry has no right to take back.

But if Bush wins, the strategy will be to permanently entrench the gains made by non-enforcement of the laws by either eliminating the laws entirely or, even better, eliminating the social and environmental regulatory authorities or agencies. The new mantra of the neocon corporatists is self-policing. In Bush newspeak that means, of course, no policing. We all saw how effective this approach was with the spectacular corporate frauds of the last decade, led by Bush buddy Ken Lay's Enron. Nevertheless, we should not be surprised to see a flurry of eliminations of laws, regulations and regulatory authorities, positioned as cost-cutting, streamlining and 'self-policing' initiatives, in the early days of a second Bush presidency.

The second thrust of the new neocon agenda is indemnification of corporations against consumer litigation. Bush will be encouraged to use a few big-headline egregious abuses of contingent-fee and class-action litigation to ban these recourses outright, to put strict caps on individual settlements, to provide corporations with more power to intimidate consumers with devastating countersuits, and to put certain privileged industries and groups out of the reach of the courts entirely. The test case for this is the California ballot initiative entitled Limitations on Enforcement of Unfair Business Competition Laws. This initiative, if successful, will prohibit consumer groups from suing corporations to prevent fraud, false advertising or other deceptions. Business groups have poured millions into this, led by Nike, which failed in its earlier attempt to establish a legal right to lie to consumers about its sweatshop operations.

Next on the agenda is expansion of the war in the Mideast with a 'pre-emptive' attack on Iran to curtail its nuclear weapons capability. Financing such a war will require severe cuts to government services. Services of a regulatory nature will be replaced by self-policing. Other services will be privatized to corporations that will have free rein to make them profitable. Services that can't be offered privately at a profit will be simply eliminated. More important than paying for the war, however, will be manning it. There are no countries willing and able to provide significant numbers of troops for a long war against Iran and then Syria and, inevitably, Saudi Arabia. And US voluntary recruits are maxed out, so a reinstatement of the draft is clearly in the cards. Of course, those with money, power and connections will be able to avoid active duty, as Bush did in Vietnam.

Patriot Act II will certainly be back on the agenda if Bush is re-elected. Kerry is so terrified of alienating moderate 'swing' voters that he is not making a big issue of this draconian, terrifying legislation, which would effectively suspend many civil liberties that Americans take for granted, and, worse, would give Homeland Security vast new powers and immunity from disclosure or justification of their actions. Those powers would be applied arbitrarily at the absolute and unrestricted discretion of individual officers, with no recourse to the victims. This is a flagrant abrogation of the US Constitution and of the fundamental rule of law. Just as in Latin American and Asian countries under juntas with similar unrestricted powers, American citizens who dare oppose or protest the actions of the government of the day will simply 'disappear'.

And finally, the neocons are furious at the suggestion that the UN should have suprarnational authority over acts of misconduct carried out by Americans, including war crimes (under the International Court of Justice) and execution of foreign nationals for crimes committed in the US. The US has exercised its executive veto in the UN so often in the last four years that it has become a laughing stock, and these vetos completely undermine the credibility of the UN as well. The simple solution, in the eyes of the neocons, is to withdraw from the UN, to make it clear once and for all that the US does not recognize its authority and considers itself above international law. Expect a re-elected Bush to conveniently present this as an ultimatum to the UN when it invades Iran -- join us or we quit.

Repeal of social and environmental protections, prohibition of consumer litigation against corporations, massive elimination and privatization of essential government services, more hugely expensive and dangerous wars in the Mideast, reinstatement of the draft for the poor and middle classes, abrogation of civil liberties, and withdrawal from the UN. This is the worst case scenario if Americans are foolish enough to re-elect Bush. If it comes true, America will have alienated itself from the rest of the West, and evolved into a corporatist state, a rogue nation. If we ever needed proof that the political and economic systems of society are incapable of solving the problems that threaten the survival of our planet, we will have it.

How Dotster cost me days and days of
downtime: stay away from this registrar

How Dotster cost me days and days of
downtime: stay away from this registrar
08/12/2004 07:36 AM
A year ago, the DNS for craphound.com disappeared. Which was weird, because I was paying for DNS with Dotster, my registrar.

I called them up and spoke to their tech support people. "Oh yeah," they said, "your paid service ended a month ago but our billing system was broken so we didn't send out a notice. So we terminated you for nonpayment. But dude, you're lucky! We gave you a free month's DNS!"

Lucky lucky me. I got a free month's DNS and to pay for it, I was bouncing mail all over the Internet and my Website wasn't resolving. Bastards. I bought two years' worth of DNS and vowed that when the domain came up for renewal, I'd switch away from Dotster. I sent them an email telling them as much and got an email back apologizing and saying that they would certainly never terminate my DNS wihtout notice again (you see where this is going, I trust)

Craphound.com is up for renewal at the end of August. Not wanting to leave things to the last minute, I changed over early this month, switching registrars to Domain Direct, who are now the registrar for all of my domains, and boingboing.net besides.

I didn't move over the DNS -- I figured I'd paid Dotster for another year's service, I might as well get it. Instead, I left myself a reminder in my iCal for next July to set up DNS at DomainDirect a month ahead of the service running out on Dotster.

This morning, Dotster terminated my DNS. Without warning. And when I called, they told me there was nothing they could do about it. Even though there's nothing in my DNS contract that says that DNS is provided to domains registered with Dotster and no others, that is, apparently, their policy. And they can't make exceptions. Not even for 48h while I effect a graceful change to DomainDirect (who have been fantastic throughout and now have 100 percent of my domain registration and DNS business).

Bastards.

The Ship Shape

The Ship Shape 10/29/2003 01:15 AM

Up on The New Yorker site, you can find Our Perfect Summer, a new story by David Sedaris.

We actually heard Sedaris read this story back in April when he made a stop at the San Francisco Opera House during his last book tour. Then, the story was called "The Ship Shape," (I think this is a better name) and immediately after hearing it, it rose to the very top of my Sedaris personal favorites lists. I, of course, have been anxiously awaited the print version since then.

It was especially great to hear him read this story live since it's so terribly bittersweet and he does an incredible job delivering it. It's moving without being over-the-top sentimentality (this is still Sedaris, after all) and the amount of humor in the piece is just right. No one plays the fool; instead it's a story about hope and disappointment amidst the sort experiences we all have as a kids.

It's a great piece and definitely worth the read.

We also met Sedaris at the signing he was doing before the event. He was sitting at a table, alone, sort of behind a pillar. Us being us, we made some horrible small talk and I embarrassed myself fully. As we were leaving, I put my hand out to offer a handshake and then quickly pulled it back, not knowing if he even likes to be touched. (Based on his books, who'd think he'd like strangers touching him?) After I asked if it was alright to shake, he laughed and probably thought I was a nutcase.

This is why you should never meet the people you admire.

The Shape of Pharrots to Come

The Shape of Pharrots to Come 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
John Coggeshall mentions that the PHP on Parrot project has been named "Pharrot" by the php-con conference attendees. Here's my take on things. Now I don't have any inside info, so the following is entirely guesswork, and any resemblence to reality is entirely your imagination: Although Sterling and Thies are very modest, given the fact that they were given the closing keynote and the amazing performance improvements - Pharrot will probably be PHP 6. The speed of the JIT means that PHP will become a general programming language. A high performance application server written 100% in PHP becomes practical. A high performance anything becomes practical in PHP. The tribes using Parrot will probably include Python, PHP and Perl. Code sharing between different programming tribes will become a reality. This does not mean that there will be full interoperatability between all languages, because (a) there is no common runtime library (yet), (b) and no consensus on what will be the default PMC's (Parrot's language extensions) installed. There will be battles fought over the run-time. In PHP4/5, after execution, we throw away the opcodes together with the bath water, or store them in shared memory. Parrot gives you more choices. See the end of Dan Sugalski's Parrot internals presentation (ppt). The Zend API is dead - big deal. Parrot is a big opportunity for companies with skill and resolve. The tools market for open source programming languages suddenly becomes much larger because you are able to support so many more languages effectively. My prediction: the first beta of Pharrot will be out in 2006. PS: Selkirk was prescient about parrot. Smart chap.

University Switches to 802.1X

University Switches to 802.1X 04/09/2004 03:57 PM
University of Tennessee switches to 802.1X, but leaves gateway-controlled segment for older systems: The university first tried a proprietary method of authentication in 2002 that left behind users of the latest operating systems (XP and OS X). The latest incarnation uses 802.1X, which is well supported in Windows XP (Service Pack 1 with wireless rollout for best results) and Mac OS X 10.3 (PEAP, EAP-TTLS, EAP-TLS, and other flavors). Because the university opted for TTLS (the reasoning isn't explained), it's not noted but they would have had to install a third-party client on Windows systems. However, TTLS is supported by Funk and Meetinghouse for a wide variety of Windows platforms as well as Solaris and certain Linux flavors. The non-802.1X segment requires a gateway login and is locked by MAC. The staff use tools to monitor MAC addresses to ensure that legitimate authenticated sessions aren't being hijacked. It's clearly a transition stage for them, too, as they can't have a complete .1X switchover, but they'll gradually have less reason to run a gatewayed system. Their current system doesn't offer session-to-session authentication, but requires re-entering credentials each time a laptop is awoken from sleep. But given the state of .1X clients, this should still be simpler (clicking a button in most cases) than a repeated gateway login....

From the St. Petersburg Times:
The threatened resignations...reflect a belief among many in the medical establishment that chiropractic is a "pseudo-science " that leads to unnecessary and sometimes harmful treatments...

The list of critics include FSU's two Nobel laureates - Robert Schreiffer, a physicist, and Harold Walter Kroto, a chemist - and Robert Holton, the chemistry professor who developed the cancer-fighting drug Taxol, which has brought FSU tens of millions of dollars in royalties. In recent weeks, more than 500 faculty members have signed petitions against the chiropractic school, including about 70 in the medical college, said Dr. Raymond Bellamy, an assistant professor who is leading the charge against the proposal.

Can A University Ban WiFi Networks? 09/09/2004 11:16 AM
Slashdot is running a story about The University of Texas at Dallas banning independent WiFi networks to avoid interference with the university-run WiFi network. There's just one (big) problem. The FCC has made it clear that only they have the right to regulate unlicensed spectrum. That was the point of the ruling they made just a few months ago telling airports they can't stop anyone from setting up WiFi networks within the airport. At the same time, though, this does demonstrate some of the issues with unlicensed spectrum. As great as it's been for generating massive growth for things like WiFi, interference is still a problem -- and one that not enough people have paid attention to.

University of Texas Removes Wi-Fi Ban 09/16/2004 11:29 AM
The University of Texas at Dallas, which recently set a rule forbidding students from building their own Wi-Fi networks, rescinded the policy: The action of forbidding the networks created quite a buzz online. University officials referred to an FCC notice posted in June that makes it clear that the FCC is the only body that has jurisdiction over the airwaves. While universities have some control over what students do in student housing, in this case, the student building is not owned by the university. That means the university has less rights to control what students do there. [link via Frank]...
