Businesses Want Software Companies To
Take Responsibility For Security Holes
05/19/2004 12:03 PMThe debate has gone on forever about just how liable software
companies should be for security holes that are later found in their
software products. Both sides make compelling points. Those who are
constantly patching and dealing with the security holes say that the
software makers should be held responsible for their poor product
design. Software developers point out that designing without any bugs
or security holes is simply impossible - and making the company liable
for any problems would destroy most software companies (especially
small, independent developers). Either way, companies are
sick of taking the blame for not patching security holes and are
saying that software developers, even if they don't accept liability
for vulnerabilities, at least need to accept some responsibility for
making the situation better. The Business Roundtable, a trade group
of CEOs, is calling on software companies to do a better job building
in security, while also making it easier to update and secure systems
when new vulnerabilities are found. They're also calling on the
companies to continue to support older versions of their software
after newer versions are on the market. They admit that companies do
need to be vigilant about protecting their IT - but they want more
help from the software developers. It seems like this is an obvious
opportunity for managed security vendors to step up and offer
solutions in the middle. The security problems are not going to go
away - if anything, they're going to get worse. What needs to be
done, however, is to look for a better solution to forcing an in-house
IT staff to be ever-vigilant about patching every single application
every time a new vulnerability is found.

Companies Forget To Protect Against
Internal Computer Security Threats
09/23/2004 11:18 AMRemember the good old days when the majority of your computer security
threats came from inside the company? That went away as the internet
became the domain of more organized attempts at breaking down security
walls of almost every IP address imaginable. However, that doesn't
mean there aren't still threats from inside the firewall -- and it
looks like
many
companies still don't take insider threats seriously. Once again,
it sounds like a more
hybrid
approach to computer security might make sense. Rather than just
watching in one direction, keeping track of things both inside and
outside the network is becoming more important.

Security Watch Special: Windows XP SP2
Security Center Spoofing Threat
08/27/2004 02:05 PMWindows XP Service Pack 2 promises to raise the security bar for the
sometimes beleaguered operating system. Unfortunately, one of the new
features could be spoofed so that it reports misleading information
about system security, or worse, lets a malicious program watch for an
opportunity to do damage without being detected. The feature is the
Windows Security Center (WSC), which displays the status ( (Figure 1)
)of the key elements of your defenses: Firewall, Updates, and
Antivirus. If your firewall has been disabled, or your antivirus is
out of date, that news will display here. The information is stored in
an internal database managed by the Windows Management Instrumentation
(WMI) subsystem built into Windows.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-025:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet
Explorer (867801)
08/02/2004 01:10 AMThis update resolves several newly discovered public vulnerabilities.
Each vulnerability is documented in this bulletin in its own
Vulnerability Details section.
If a user is logged on with administrative privileges, an attacker who
successfully exploited the most severe of these vulnerabilities could
take complete control of an affected system, including installing
programs; viewing, changing, or deleting data; or creating new
accounts with full privileges. Users whose accounts are configured to
have fewer privileges on the system would be at less risk than users
who operate with administrative privileges.
Microsoft recommends that customers apply the update immediately.
