The primary mission of the Library of Congress is to
serve Members of the Congress and thereafter, the needs of the
government, other libraries, and members of the public. The Library's
staff will respond to reference and information requests in accordance
with this mission. Correspondents are encouraged to use local and
online resources. For those seeking further assistance from the
Library of Congress, the staff will respond to their reference and
information needs to the extent possible. Because the Library
participates in a global network of librarians working electronically
to answer questions, your online reference question may be submitted
to this global network for reply. Please note that the scope of the
services does not include: compilation of extensive bibliographies,
requests for information connected with contests, completion of school
or work assignments, translations or research in heraldry or family
history. This has been added to Reference Resources

UC Digital Library Changing Scholarly
Publication
05/29/2004 04:49 AMUC Digital Library Changing Scholarly Publicationhttp://www.syllabus
.com/article.asp?id=9357In response to rising -- "out
of control" -- costs of scholarly publications, the University of
California Digital Library's eScholarship Repository (
http://repositories.cdlib.org/
a>) offers faculty a central online location for everything from
technical reports to peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes, says
Catherine Candee, director of scholarly communication and publishing
initiatives at UCDL. It provides university departments, centers and
research units direct control over creation and dissemination of the
full range of scholarly output, from pre-publication materials through
journals and peer-reviewed series, and -- beginning in May 2004 -
posting of legally available UC authors' commercially published
articles. In addition to practical, day-to-day benefits and savings
(in a little less than two years, the repository has seen almost
500,000 downloads of entire papers or articles), serendipitous
benefits have surfaced. For example, the UCDL now boasts an
infrastructure that allows administrators and faculty to focus on
creating systemic change in the way authors and readers work. "We have
technologies that allow broader, freer, more creative uses of text and
data and we can begin to fashion badly needed services for the
classroom, office and lab," says Candee. This will be added to Academic Resources
2004 Internet MiniGuide.

The John W. Kluge Center occupies inspirational and
capacious study and meeting spaces within the Library's magnificently
restored Thomas Jefferson Building. The Center seeks to bring a group
of the world's best senior thinkers - the Kluge Scholars - into
residence, to stimulate, energize, and distill wisdom from the rich
resources of the Library and to interact naturally over a period of
time with political Washington. There is great flexibility in the
interaction between the scholars and Members of Congress within the
Jefferson Building, where lawmakers find a haven for serious discourse
only a short walk from the Capitol. This has been added to

Zora Neale Hurston Plays at the Library
of Congress
01/07/2004 03:00 PMThe Zora Neale Hurston Plays at the Library of
Congresshttp://memory.loc.gov/ammem
/znhhtmlThe Zora Neale Hurston Plays collection at the
Library of Congress present a selection of ten plays written by
Hurston, author, anthropologist, and folklorist. Deposited in the
United States Copyright Office between 1925 and 1944, most of the
plays remained unpublished and unproduced until they were rediscovered
in the Copyright Deposit Drama Collection in 1997. The plays reflect
Hurston's life experience, travels, and research, especially her study
of folklore in the African-American South. Totaling seven hundred
images, the scripts are housed in the Library's Manuscript, Music, and
Rare Books and Special Collections Divisions.
Zora Neale
Hurston (1891-1960), the author of the ten plays (with co-authors
Langston Hughes on Mule-Bone and Dorothy Waring on Polk County),
deposited these scripts with the United States Copyright Office
between 1925 and 1944. Included in the scanned materials are four
very short plays (sketches or skits) and six full-length plays. Most
are
light-hearted if not outright comedies, and several include
song lyrics without the associated music. Hurston knew the songs and
the subjects of these plays from her own upbringing and her
professional folklore research in the African-American South. She
identified as her hometown Eatonville, Florida, the first
African-American incorporated township.
During the 1920s, 1930s,
and 1940s, Hurston traveled the American South collecting and
recording the sounds and songs of her people, while her research in
Haiti is reflected in the voodoo scenes and beliefs woven into several
of the plays.
With the exception of Mule-Bone, the plays
presented here were all unpublished when they were rediscovered in the
Library of Congress in 1997. At that time, only Polk County was at
all familiar to scholars on the basis of copies in other repositories.
Little was known about Hurston's theatrical career until 1998, when
scholarly publications began to reflect the drama discoveries
announced by the Library of Congress. The discovery of the scripts,
added to those Hurston plays already known, firmly establishes their
author, an African-American woman, as a significant dramatist of the
twentieth century.

Library of Congress deletes
whistle-blower's comments
04/01/2005 03:43 AMCory Doctorow:
Joe discovered that when the Library of Congress posted the comments
it got on the "Orphan Works" proceeding, it failed to redact the
personal info of the submitters, simply covering them with a white
box, which anyone could see through with a simple copy-paste
operation. He complained to the Library of Congress, so they deleted
his comment.
I had assurances from the LoC that they had fixed this personal
information disclosure. However, working with the folks at
freeculture.org, it appears that their "solution" was to remove my
comment document only (instead of a more general solution). Moreover,
all the original unredacted files are available in the ZIP file they
offer... which hasn't been updated.
Man, doesn't anyone know someone at the LoC who can get things done?
Well, I guess that's the price I pay for providing feedback
(participation tax, I suppose).
