Spymac + iStockphoto = Free iPod photo
Spymac + iStockphoto = Free iPod photo
03/19/2005 03:26 AMSpymac has teamed up with the stock photography double agents over at
iStockphoto to give all registered Spymac members the chance to win a
brand spanking new 60 GB iPod photo! All you have to do to enter is
create the godfather of all posters for SpyStock between March 18 and
April 18, 2005.
What is SpyStock? We have no idea, so that's why we need you to help
us out. The only information we have on SpyStock is that it's
centered around Spymac and iStockphoto. The rest is up to you my
friends. To help you on your artistic journey, the kind folks at
iStockphoto have supplied all participating members with eight top
notch images from their massive stock photography database. To access
these fine images, you'll need to visit the Spymac SpyStock gallery.
Once you've checked the images out, you're free to use as many as you
wish in your SpyStock masterpiece. To make things even more
interesting, you must use at least two of the iStockphoto-provided
images in your composition. Did I mention that the winner gets a
shiny new 60 GB iPod photo from the stock photography ninjas at
iStockphoto?
To recap then, the official rules are as follows:
1. The contest begins on March 18, 2005 and closes on April 18, 2005
2. The theme of the poster must be that of SpyStock
3. Aspects of both Spymac and iStockphoto must be included in the
poster
4. A minimum of two images from those provided by iStockphoto for the
SpyStock contest must be used in the composition of the poster
5. All entries must be upload to the official SpyStock Entries gallery
6. Multiple entries are allowed
7. You must be a registered member of Spymac to participate
8. The contest winner will receive a 60 GB Apple iPod photo
compliments of iStockphoto
9. All contest judging will be completed by the staff members of
iStockphoto
So, if to you, SpyStock is an event where the members of Spymac unite
to sing folk songs at a rodeo with guitars made of Lego while snapping
photographs on invisible stilts, doctor up a poster conveying that
message. Remember, aside from the outlined aspects that must be
included, SpyStock is whatever you want it to be. So get out your
crayons, thinking caps, G5s, rocket launchers, whatever works best for
you, and send us your smoking hot entries (luke-warm entries will also
be considered). Good luck to all who enter!
Entries can be uploaded here.

works using Radio Frequency (RF) technology instead of infrared, so it
doesn't require a line of sight to the iPod and can operate up to 60

Yeah, that probably got your attention. But thanks to event sponsors
iPodResQ, the iPod mini is just one prize among many that we'll be
giving away at the South Beach iPod Garage Party. So what do you have
to do to win? All you have to do is show up with your iPod, connect it
to our sound system, and play "DJ" for twelve minutes as you share the
highlights of your own music library with the rest of us (as many
songs as you like, as long as it fits within the time limit). Yep,
it's your very own twelve minutes of fame.

company's Icewear mini cases. Prie Hook, which will ship in
mid-January for US$54, features a large metal hook that you can use to
attach the leather case to a belt loop or other spot. A flap at the
bottom opens for charging the MP3 player in a dock; slots at the top
and bottom allow access to all the ports. It's available in two
models, one that fits all 4G iPods -- including the iPod photo -- and
one that fits the iPod mini; the hook on the latter doesn't swivel 360

Scam Or Not: Free iPods?
Scam Or Not: Free iPods?
08/18/2004 06:32 AMMost people admit that the idea behind a site promising free iPods if
you sign up for trial offerings from various marketers (and convince
others to as well) sounds like a scam. However, those who have done
it
insist
it's no scam at all -- but a legitimate marketing practice that
gets people to try various products or services in exchange for an
iPod. That said, whether it's a full-out scam or simply a marketing
ploy, it's still sketchy. Anything that requires you to get others to
participate before you get your "prize" is going to lead to spam from
people trying to get you to sign up so they can get their prize.
Furthermore, you're giving up your info to a marketing company who
clearly has incentive to resell it. Their privacy policy (which does
not appear to show up in Firefox) admits that they're going to give
your info to "marketing partners." So, while it may not be a full on
scam, it is just like plenty of other marketing programs, where the
end result is plenty of spam.

So Free iPods, right?
Apparently there's a sort of multi-level-marketing promotion through
the site FreeiPods.com, who will give you a free iPod mini, 15GB iPod,
or $250 iTunes gift certificate for signing up for one of their
"online offers," like signing up for AOL Broadband or Ancestry.com.
The idea is, of course, that after six people have signed up (you and
five people you refer) they'll get enough kickback from the
participating companies to pay for your iPod.
So Andru at GearLive has figured out a way to make the Free iPod
process a little easier. We'll explain how after the jump.

12/27/2004 01:22 AMIn case you were wondering if the folks at FreeiPods.com (aka Gratis
Internet) were somehow the exception to the rules "There is no free

this New York Times article (free signup necessary) explains, you must
sign up for one of about 10 different offers and hornswoggle five of
your friends into doing likewise. And while Gratis makes no secret of
this fact, somehow while giving away approximately 500 iPods a week,
the company's revenue for 2003 was nearly $5 million and 2004 is
expected to triple that.
I dunno. I'm not signing up. Have any of you signed up and received a

07/20/2004 02:45 AMHot off the severely overhyped announcement concerning the latest iPod
models (er... honestly, they look pretty similar to the old ones)
Slashdot has the
story
that
Duke
University is giving away "free" iPods to incoming freshman (which
won't make the upperclassmen happy, but what can you do?). The "free"
is a bit of a misdirection, because most people attending Duke are
paying an awful lot of money for the privilege, and I'm sure a slight
tuition bump to pay for the iPod will mostly go unnoticed. Of course,
this isn't the first time this has been done. Last year we wrote
about students at Georgia College & State University
receivi
ng iPods donated by Apple. While both cases talked about the
educational uses of such devices, it's more likely an attempt by Apple
to get people hooked early, so when they make big announcements about
iPods that really don't seem all that different than the last ones,
these kids have to go out and spend their money on them. It's the
same strategy Napster is using in
signing up colleges.
