09/23/2004 02:41 AMMany automotive dealers have done a good job selling the new customer
of a high security equipped car with the premise that the keys to the
new purchase can only be made at the dealer!! In most cases high end
locksmith facilities can not only duplicate but can program or
reprogram the new keys for a owner at a substantially reduced price in
comparison to a dealer. [PRWEB Sep 23, 2004]

Are Speakerphone Mobile Calls Less
Annoying Than Regular Calls?
Are Speakerphone Mobile Calls Less
Annoying Than Regular Calls?
04/21/2004 03:53 PMLast week we noted a new study saying that
people get
annoyed with others talking on mobile phones because they only hear
one half of the conversation. At the time, I wrote that this made
sense as periods of silence followed by talking are a lot more jarring
to the passive listener. However, this BBC report claims that the
reason for the annoyance
is that it
shows that we're more curious about what the other party is
saying. I'm not sure I buy that. It seems much more likely that it's
the variability in noise, from silent to noisy rather than any form of
curiosity. When the conversation is at a constant hum (even when
loud), it's much easier to tune it out. Still, the findings do go
against the opinion many people have expressed that things like
"push-to-talk" where the phone usually acts as a speaker phone would
be more annoying since we get to hear both sides of the conversation.
In fact, the researchers behind the study are even suggesting that
mobile phone makers may want to explore adding speaker phones to more
phones to make them
less annoying. Of course, the study only
set up two conditions: a conversation on a mobile phone and a
face-to-face conversation. They didn't test the speaker phone
situation to see how annoying that was. It's possible that the
annoyance factor comes from the inability to make use of body language
to express concepts as well, leading to a different tone of voice.

Domain Keys Explained
Domain Keys Explained
05/18/2004 09:08 PMVia Jeremy Zawodny,,
Yahoo's Anti-Spam Resource
Center have published an explanation of their proposed Domain Keys spam
fighting technique. At first glance it looks very promising. There's
no centralised authority, no requirements for changes to existing
protocols and the central concept is extremely easy to understand.
Essentially, mail servers generate a public/private key pair and sign
outgoing messages with the private key, while publishing the public
key as part of their DNS record. Because only they can publish to their
public key in this way the signature can be used to confirm that the
sender of the email has not been spoofed. The presence or lack of a
signature can be used as part of the process of identifying spam.
The FAQ
covers all the bases I could think of, and explains how Domain Keys
can help fight phishing attacks as well.

06/13/2004 01:04 AMOle Eichhorn:
Have you ever
wondered about all the unused keys on your keyboard? Us Mac users
have it slightly better, since we actually use the Command and Option
keys, and Apple omits some of the useless keys like Scroll Lock. I
agree that Caps Lock is useless; let's just put the Control key there
(no, I am not a former Sun user; stop looking at me like that). And as
a programmer/HTML coder, I'd like to see +, <, and > promoted to
their own keys. The [ and ] keys should probably be swapped so that
{ and } are the default and [ and ] are the shifted
characters. No doubt dedicated ( and ) keys would be worth it to Lisp
programmers.
