Is a Rich Internet Application in Your
Future?

David Temkin (of Laszlo Systems) will be at the Bay Area Chi meeting tonight.

He's really a wonderful speaker and can explain RIAs for you.

I highly suggest everyone attend.

Ethan and Ian (of ODDport) will be there too.

And io you go - make SURE to ask the Macromedia guy (slimeball) "hey, Flex seems a whole lot like laszlo...... where did you get the idea from."

Macromedia has to know that it's not OK to steal ideas from others and just plain rip them off.

A Rich Internet Application (or RIA) uses a proprietary client instead of the web browser as the front end for a Server Side software application program or MiddleWar e. The result is a desktop-quality User Interface and application functionality. An RIA allows the website to provide services to visitors, but these should not be confused with Web Services or Service Oriented Architectures, which provide services to other application programs. The RIA depends on the new generation of browser development tools like Macromedia Flash, with its ScalableVectorGraphics?, or Microsoft's Avalon/XAML, or perhaps Mozilla XUL (XML-based User Interface Language).

The Future of Flash as a rich client

The Future of Flash as a rich client 09/13/2002 02:24 AM
Mike Chambers has created ... an example of the Flash MX DataGrid control. It's a great example of the richness of the client environment created with Flash MX. We're now reaching the richness of the traditional Mac/Win desktop in terms of user interface components.

I know the DataGrid is one of those components that *everyone* needs in an Internet application --- it facilitates easy structured viewing/browsing/editing of tabular data; it will be interesting to see how developers extend and enhance it with custom Cell Renderers to provide really powerful data views and manipulation. -- Jeremy Allaire, author of Cold Fusion, CTO Macromedia.

"tri" I intend to learn Flash over the next few months. It looks like this (or something similar) is going to be very important in the future.

Last fall I asked a question that I'll probably keep on asking in various contexts: Can rich Internet apps be web-friendly?. In response, Macromedia chief software architect Kevin Lynch created an example showing how the state of a Flash app could be exposed on the browser's URL-line, and thus made available for bookmarking, deep linking, and scripted integration. There was also some follow-up discussion on integrating this technique with the browser's navigation history. ...

Muzio JM-200 Flash Player Reviewed

Muzio JM-200 Flash Player Reviewed 08/09/2004 07:27 AM

muziojm200_buttons.jpg imageI4U reviews the Muzio JM-200 flash player, a run-of-the-mill music player with a few stand out features, like a physically spinning volume wheel, two-color OLED screen, and the ability to add your own custom graphics to the front of its display. Other than that we're looking at what has become almost stock standard on flash players, including an FM tuner with recording, voice and line-in recording, and TrueBass (something so common I rarely even bother mentioning it).

Another nice thing - and this is going to start being standard pretty much soon - is the JM-200 is a USB host device, meaning it's conceivable you could hook this music player directly into your camera (or whatever) and copy over files. Oh! And you can listen from two sets of headphones into a single unit.

I guess this isn't quite as stock standard as I had let on.

muziojm200.jpg imageA new Muzio from Korean manufacturer Jungsoft (promoting the hot new band, "Man and His Cymbals"), this one called the JM-200. Besides being sort of ugly, which is probably not a bullet-point feature, the Muzio supports USB Host functionality, SRS (some sort of surround sound magic?), OGG Vorbis support, FM radio, aluminum body, and recharging via USB. Plus, it has a two-color OLED screen, which probably isn't too much to get worked up over, but there you have it. I4U has some information, and apparently a test model, so expect a proper review in the next few days.

Did I mention it's a flash player? It's a flash player.

Who was David S. Canter #1?

Who was David S. Canter #1? 09/24/2004 01:18 AM

dad-harold.jpg

One day I stumbled downstairs into our kitchen to meet Harold Washington talking to my father. Harold was the Congressman from our district and my father was explaining to him how he could split the white vote and become the first black mayor of the city of Chicago.

My father had been mentoring, encouraging and working with Hariold for 15 years by then and it worked. They won the election and Harold became history. It was a blast back then - watching it all happen.

My father encouraged black politicians to get their piece of the pie - just as I'm encouraging micro-content entrepreneurs to get theirs.

My father never charged for helping anyone out - and it was only until he was 65 did he ever accept a job from anyone he helped. He was one of those idealistic reds.

His father was a famous American Communist and he was raised (as I was) on the notion that one man CAN change the world. Now it's my job to instill that spirit in my children (5 so far.)

Reading Canter in an aggregator.....

Reading Canter in an aggregator..... 07/28/2004 11:08 AM

... is like watching The Matrix on a Teletype machine/printer: you not only miss the entire experience, but most of the headlines picked up by the feed are uninteresting at quick glance, whereas the stories themselves usually are pretty good. Sure, better summary style might do the trick, as Jon Udell often writes about, but that would miss the point, and the impact/speed with which worthy items appear. I used to moan about the confusing (non-existing or subtle) quoting convention, but now I've told him that I don't care anymore... where would we be if Marc Canter gave up his shoot-from-the-hip style, and increasingly-rich-media blog pages?

[My Dog]

Thanks Marc.

Marc Eisenstadt is one of my favorite people. And not just because he bought me a headset and camera (which I haven't even used yet.)

I tty and keep my life as close to 'normal' people as possible - so ONE DAY I'll pull out that camera and start using Marc's stuff - but first......
