Special Glass Blocks Heat But Not Light

Special Glass Blocks Heat But Not Light 08/10/2004 04:18 PM

Researchers at University College London have developed a special coating for glass that blocks heat from the sun when temperatures rise over 29 degrees Celsius (about 85 Fahrenheit). The derivative of vanadium dioxide allows buildings to retain valuable heat from the sun when it is cold, but block the infrared light that heats things up with only one, fairly showstopping flaw - the coating, as it stands, is a yellowish green. But they're working on it.

Shooting outside of our vision. Infrared photography is cool - the world looks surreal. But man, it's a PIA. Just keeping the film at the right temperatures is difficult. So, all of this can be done digitally. I still haven't gotten around to buying the necessary pieces, but in replying to this Ask MetaFilter question, I remembered eric cheng's page. For your perusal.

FacetopSo you thought the upcoming enhancements to iChat AV sounded cool? Wait until you see Facetop:

Facetop superimposes transparent images of a computer's desktop over video images of the user to allow the user to look at the video and desktop at the same time.

The video shows a ghostly mirror image of the user so that when he points, his video reflection appears to touch objects on the screen. The system tracks fingertip position in the video to allow the user to control the mouse pointer.

Essentially it looks like two users are working with a pane of glass containing the desktop between them. UNC is developing this technology as part of their research into software to aid in pair programming over a distance. Pretty cool. This is possible on OSX right now, but Windows folks will apparently need to wait for Longhorn for the neccesary support.

lookingglass.jpgSun Microsystems is releasing an early version of their Project Looking Glass desktop environment into the GPL.

What if windows were translucent so that you could see the multiple windows you're working on at the same time? What if you could tack a note to yourself right on the Web page you're viewing? What if your CD or movie database became a 3D jukebox, where titles were joined with images to make finding what you want easier than ever? [...]

Sun Microsystems' latest innovations by its Advanced Software Technology Team will make these "what-ifs" a reality for the desktop of the near future. Code-named Project Looking Glass, these Java technology-based developments will bring 3D windowing capabilities to the desktop to offer a far richer user experience for work and play. But, it's not only about looks, it's about creating an engaging user experience, one that can make communications and collaboration even easier.

It's basically Sun's spin on a 3D desktop environment. I remember seeing early previews of this at a JavaOne keynote a few years ago, and everyone definitely sat up and took notice. Even at that early stage, they had video playing in real time on a 3D object. It would be awesome to see some of this tech integrated into GNOME and KDE a few versions from now.

Self-Cleaning Glass

Self-Cleaning Glass 06/08/2004 09:07 AM

activ_glass.jpg LogoThey've been developing it for years, so it's good news to see that the Pilkington Activ glass -- the self-cleaning "eco glass" coated with a film of titanium dioxide -- is finally being put to use in commercial development. If you hadn't see it before, the Activ glass has two advantages over normal glass: the first is the photocatalytic effect that reacts to sunlight to break down organic dirt, and the second is an enhanced hydrophilic tendency of water running on the glass to form sheets instead of droplets (like Rain-X, for instance). The combination of the two effects means that every time it rains (as I hear it does a lot in UK, where the technology was developed), the outside of the windows clean themselves.

Raise a glass for Pat

Raise a glass for Pat 05/07/2004 03:28 AM

Leonard pulled the recent under the radar stuff about Pat Tillman into one nice post. I was impressed with Tillman's resolve and unselfishness in ditching sports for the military, but after reading the SFGate article he sounds like an interesting and very human person to boot. The funeral sounded like a perfect send-off, done the way he would have wanted it, and Ted Rall is an asshole for making a dark cynical joke of the guy's ultimate sacrifice.

This is why blogs are a good thing for the existing media - due to the language used at the funeral, no media outlet in america can carry it, and probably due to our religious sensibilities, the photo from the funeral is only running on an overseas news wire. So you can only get the rest of the story thanks to the millions of eyeballs scouring the net for interesting angles on what would otherwise be one-dimensional soundbites.
