ata/datamining/story/0,10801,88351,00.htmlFormerly
used primarily by the intelligence community and businesses that are
strongly dependent upon research, text mining technologies are now
beginning to find more general acceptance. The mounds of unstructured
data that have been piling up in companies for decades are growing
larger as a result of new regulatory requirements that are forcing
companies to retain e-mail and other documents - and to be able to
find specific information in them. The key to making text mining work
for business -- not to mention the intelligence community -- is
striking a balance between accuracy and speed, says Ronen Feldman,
chief scientist at text mining software company ClearForest Corp. in
New York. In a recent interview with Computerworld's Tommy Peterson,
Feldman discussed how text mining technologies work and what promise
they hold for business.

Unstructured Data
07/03/2004 05:34 AMText Mining Begins Digging Through Unstructured
Datahttp://snipurl.com/7gppA good
85% of an organization's knowledge is in the form of unstructured
data. Easy to quantify, hard to find. "We are drowning in information
but are starving for knowledge," says an R&D technical leader at Dow
Chemical. But a new generation of text mining tools is allowing
companies to extract key elements from large unstructured data sets,
discover relationships and summarize the information. Dow, for
example, uses ClearResearch to extract data from chemical patent
abstracts, published research papers and the company's own files. And
the University of Louisville uses SAS's Text Miner on text files, such
as patient charts, and analyzes flat-file snapshots of billing and
pharmaceutical databases as text, rather than as database entries.
Researchers there have pinpointed certain medications that can prolong
hospital stays for patients. Because of some limitations in the new
software (such as understanding linguistics), text miners are still
niche products, generally restricted to specific parts of an
organization and requiring specialized analytical skills to implement
and deliver truly useful information. It'll be awhile before they're
commonly available. But some vendors are already incorporating text
mining tools as a background function to improve the effectiveness of
more familiar search or document management applications.

Or you can spring for the two-light set for $150. Might as

Fossil Wrist PDA (Finally) Reviewed
Fossil Wrist PDA (Finally) Reviewed
02/05/2005 10:17 PM
For those of you who don't mind adorning your wrist with what
appears to be a small, metal-framed end table comes the Wrist PDA from
Fossil. Possibly the first wrist watch to come with a stylus, (albeit
one that looks like the nail file from a mini-Leatherman) Fossil has
jam-packed every ounce of PalmOS goodness they could into a little
square. As a bonus, they've graciously packed it in an adorable
orange tin which you can later use to store your Tinker Toys or
fingers collection. FossilWristPDA.com has a surprisingly balanced
review/getting started guide that gets only a little bit smarmy (and
we'll cut them some slack, since they've obviously been anxiously
sitting on that domain for a while). It seems that writing on the
watch has a bit of a learning curve, but using most third party
software works well and allows you to pack quite a bit of
functionality onto your wrist. It's only taken like 3 years to get
here.

TheRegister has gotten their paws on a Fossil Wrist
PDA, the FX2008, and posted their review of it. After having waited
"an extra year," the reviewer says it has some serious pitfalls
— it's too damn big and has too short a battery life. One is a
critical blow to the "watch" aspect, and the other a critical blow to
the "PDA" aspect. I'll let you figure out which is which.
Fatality.
