Alphalogix, Inc., a leading provider of software solutions and services for the connected enterprise, addresses the high cost of enterprise wide instant messaging deployment and management. With this in mind, Alphalogix developed the Versona Instant Messaging System (VIMS) which drastically lowers the cost of deploying and maintaining an instant messaging infrastructure without sacrifice to capabilities or features. This is made possible with the IM client streaming technology used by Alphalogix in the Versona Instant Messaging System. [PRWEB May 18, 2004]

Instant Messaging Mom And Dad

Instant Messaging Mom And Dad 01/03/2004 01:23 AM
My parents live more than 3,000 miles away from where I live, yet I'm in constant contact with them thanks to instant messaging software, which they started using nearly six years ago. It's amazing how much closer it's allowed us to remain as a family, despite the physical distance (though, my father has the somewhat disconcerting habit of waking up and logging in to the computer before I've gone to sleep the night before and starting up a conversation). It appears we're not the only family to bridge distance with such a solution. The NY Times is reporting that it's increasingly common for family members to stay in touch via instant messaging - even if they live in the same house. In some cases, it's made normally difficult parent-child communications easier, since many people are more comfortable expressing themselves through the written/typed word than the spoken word. Also, it gives a "built-in" pause in communication that often helps to stop people from saying something they'll regret, while also hiding any emotional facial response that could shut off conversation. So while some parents are complai ning that they can't get their kids offline, maybe they just need to log in on their own computer and start chatting with them.

SMS Messaging for MSN Messenger UK Beta

SMS Messaging for MSN Messenger UK Beta
Due Soon
04/14/2005 04:27 AM
In an email to MSN beta testers, Microsoft have announced plans to start testing SMS (short message service) messaging direct from their popular chat client.

SMS Messaging features were present in previous beta releases of MSN Messenger yet had a variety of restrictions placed on users. With the new beta, the requirement for a passport account to enter a contact has been dropped, and one can simply enter a name and mobile number. As well as this new functionality, a number of new mobile carriers have been added.

Microsoft is targeting the beta at users in the UK, and notes that whilst in beta stages, usage will be free. So far, no public launch date has been announced, or, more importantly, a future pricing system. Microsoft's attempts to "commercialise" elements of MSN Messenger (dynamic display pictures) have been criticised by users for being too expensive and restrictive.

Messaging and Presence @ IETF

Messaging and Presence @ IETF 02/19/2004 12:50 PM

After perusing the IETF's Working Group Guidelines and Procedures, I went perusing the web for charters to 'crib' from.  I came across SIMPLE and XMPP.&n bsp; These are not just interesting from a potential future IETF bretheren point of view, but also from a basic syndication and API point of view.  In particular, such protocols can avoid the scalability problems associated with a polling based architecture and can potentially navigate through gateways, firewalls and routers.

Authentication is the one area where I expect things to be different, but the uniform layout of the feed and entries are something that I don't expect to vary based on the transfer mechanism.

How Americans Use Instant Messaging
http://www. pewinternet.org/report_display.asp?r=133

2004 Pew Internet & American Life surveys reveal that more than four in ten online Americans instant message (IM). That reflects about 53 million American adults who use instant messaging programs. About 11 million of them IM at work and they are becoming fond of its capacity to encourage productivity and interoffice cooperation. At the same time, IM usage varies widely across different age groups. Instant messengers utilize IM not only as a way to expand and remain connected their social circle, but also as a form of self-expression, through use of customized away messages, profiles and buddy icons. Instant messagers use the expressive tools of IM more frequently than the protective tools that allow them to block unwanted communications. Buddy list management also occurs relatively infrequently, with users reporting adding or deleting buddies from their list no more than a few times a month.
