A Pro-Evil Mutual Fund? For centuries, the argument in favor of laissez-faire capitalism has been simple. If you step back and let businesses pursue profit without restraint, legitimate needs and desires will be taken care of in an efficient manner. Moral concerns, the argument goes, are better handled by consumers and investors voting with dollars than governments coercing with legislation. Now, Cato Institute scholar and Fox News columnist Steven Milloy is worried ideologically motivated investors might be putting business profits in danger. He's forming a new mutual fund to fight their leftist influence.

The Not Really Free, Not Really
Broadband, Free Broadband Scam

The Not Really Free, Not Really
Broadband, Free Broadband Scam
08/06/2004 04:41 PM
Aaron writes in to point us to a story at Broadband Reports about a scam claiming to offer "free" broadband, when the truth is anything but that. The company in question is really just offering one of those silly web "accelerator" tools that speed up some dialup web surfing by caching images and using some compression. It's not really broadband at all, though if you're stuck on dialup, apparently it helps. It's also not free at all, since it's a typical pyramid scam, where you need to get others to sign up first. Since they know otherwise intelligent people will know it's a scam, the site doesn't make outrageous claims on their home page, but leaves those only for those who come via a referral code (which is all part of the scam) at which point they start making outlandish claims anyone with a bit of broadband knowledge would know were false.

Canadian government funding DRM with
tax-dollars
04/16/2004 03:38 PM
The Canadian government is giving away tax-dollars to fund the creation of digital rights management software. I think I'm going to throw up. Or go on tax strike. The idea that the Canadian government is going to spend my arts-career-earned dollars on doomed techno-snake-oil whose only use is to frustrate posterity, steal the public's rights in copyright, and justify the existence of stunningly evil anti-circumvention laws -- Christ, it makes me want to spit.
To assist in the development and implementation of online, copyright management and licensing systems and mechanisms that facilitate access to and the exploitation of one or all types of existing or copyrighted works, in particular Canadian, including works where multiple ownership arrangements exist, preferably through the development of a single-window model.

The Best For Broadband: AOL vs. MSN

The Best For Broadband: AOL vs. MSN 02/11/2004 02:35 AM
Are America Online (TWX ) and Microsoft's (MSFT ) MSN relevant in the broadband era? The two online services' latest packages, AOL 9.0 for Broadband and MSN 9, try to make a case but manage no more than partial success. AOL's broadband offering is the richer and better integrated of the two, but I'm left wondering if either is worth the expense.

The Broadband Home of the Future. With almost 23 million households sporting high-speed, always-on Internet connections, the broadband home of the future makes every room the center of the networked world. By Chris Anderson from Wired magazine. [Wired News]

This is why we need FOAF, OpenReviews and other new forms of open micro-content formats.  All validating cleanly.

Last week popular peer-to-peer telephony company Skype launched SkypeOut, allowing you to call regular telephone numbers from your computer or PDA. The price list is sweet, and the global rate for selected countries looks good too. There's no press relase, news announcement or description page yet, but Heiko Hebig confirms that it's working with an early short review.
