DB Sumo Sunriser Skateboard Headlights

DB Sumo Sunriser Skateboard Headlights 03/30/2005 09:10 AM

dbsumo_sunriser.jpgI have a long and silent war with the skaterats that live down my street, who have of late taken to calling themselves the 'Dobkings' (our street is 'Dobbin,' get it?) and spray painting their new stencils all over the street's dumpsters. I wage this war normally by walking down the street, using a hula-hoop motion and my gut's natural inertia to rotate my head, avoiding their smiles.

Next time, though, I will hit them with a blast from the Sunriser, the new headlamp system for skateboards from DB Sumo. It's designed to be installed between the trucks and deck of a skateboard, but will serve just as well as a distraction while I waddle the last forty feet around the corner. They're 20 bucks a pop, plus shipping.

OpenMedia.org is heating up 08/15/2004 05:24 PM

Looks like we'll be able to "open up" the Openmedia.org Wiki real soon now.

We've got enough content and momentum - that there's actually something there for folks to grok now.

One thing JD and I have found - is the termendous support for this concept and all the existing related efforts that TOTALLY tie into the OpenMedia concept.

So now teh hard work commences. We need folks to actually DO soemthing - instead oif just lurk. So we've set up specific sub-groups, focused on particular issues:

- Web Site development
- Base Specs
- User Experience and User Interfaces
- Meta data
- Creator Authentication
- Roadmap
- Legal

We're hoping to make this dream come true.

MP3 Phone Battle in Korea Heating Up

MP3 Phone Battle in Korea Heating Up 05/06/2004 07:29 AM

While the patent fight over MP3 phones in Korea is ongoing, the conflict between the Korean music industry and cellphone makers is about to reach the boiling point (Korean).  While the Korean music industry is trying to ban MP3 phones in Korea, LG Telecom wants LG phone users to be able to download and play any MP3 files.  As in most such conflicts in Korea, neither side is prepared to lose.

Whether MP3 phones are banned in Korea or not, both sides have to worry about downloadable third-party software capable of accessing other music networks and playing other formats.  If they cripple the device so that downloaded software can't access the cellphone's audio, then Korean phonemakers will lose the competitive edge over models from other phone makers.

Only possibly workable solution I see is Play Tax.  The idea is to charge music listeners using audio devices by the minute and compensate the music industry.  Differentiating music and conversations can be done by a chip on every device that can output hi-quality sound.

Available in both 2- and 4-door versions, the UK importer ZEV Ltd. plans to sell around 350 of the units in the next 18 months. Even better, the Gems are exempt from the UK road tax and London's congestion charge.

Body Electric

Body Electric 08/04/2004 10:04 AM
Skinplex is a new commercial technology that uses the human body as a conductor of data. According to an article in EE Times, the developers, German start-up Ident Technoogy AG, hope to compete with RFID, Bluetooth, and Near Field Communications (NFC) for some applications:
Skinplex technology could be used between an identifier worn on the user's body and a receiver integrated into a car, for example. A distinct code is transmitted through touch, the receiver recognizes its dedicated, authorized sender, and the car door is opened, for example.
This reminds me of the Personal Area Network research at MIT's Media Lab in the mid-1990s. Neil Gershenfeld and Thomas Zimmerman demonstrated a system where two people could trade electronic business cards by shaking hands. Link (via Carlo Longino at TheFeature)

Electric Arc of Death? 01/16/2004 11:02 AM
Maybe you've seen the Electric Arc of Death video. OK, so maybe it's just capable of death if you get too close. But, if you work in the power industry like I do, I was amazed to see this rather impressive video of a switchyard problem. Electric arcs involving switchgear for transmission lines are nothing new, and this link provides an excellent analysis of why this arc is occuring. Make sure you turn the volume up for an extra charge of excitement.
