All Marketers Are Liars
All Marketers Are Liars
04/14/2005 03:31 PM
Seth Godin sent me a a copy of
his new book,
All Marketers Are Liars. It's excellent. As usual,
it's very provocative and typical Seth Godin. In a way, it's like
Cluetrain Manifesto written by
someone who speak Madison Avenuese. He writes about how people buy
products because of stories and how these stories fit into their world
view. The products and people behind the stories have to be authentic,
but people pay for these stories. These stories sell the products, not
facts about the products. Most of these stories are not completely
true. It reminds me of my Moleskine notebook which has a story that I
know isn't really true, but I love the story. My Macintosh is also the
same. I know Apple is suing a blogger and has DRM all over iTunes, but
for some reason, I'm still believe the story that they're on my side.
(For now.) He also writes about the end of the advertising "message"
and that you can't control the story. You don't know where your
customer will touch your product/company and get their first
impression. Every part of your company has to be authentic and
resonate with the story.
The book reminds me of Don't
Think of an Elephants by George Lakoff which is about how the
Republican Party is successful at telling their story because it fits
the frame / world view of their voters.
Interestingly, Seth is telling a pretty strong story that I believe
doesn't fit the world view of many of the marketers he is talking to.
I hope they believe his story. ;-)
He has a blog about
the book called Liar's Blog for the book.

Video News Releases: Deception And
Deceit
04/21/2004 02:09 PMJay
Rosen writes
"Check out this development at PressThink.
Bloggers (Campaign Desk and PressThink) press the Public Relations
Society of America into taking a stand against fakery in Video News
Releases, wherein a PR person claims to be a reporter when reading
from a script. This is the outcome of the infamous Karen Ryan case.
It's a "tech" story because, as a reader points out in comments @
PressThink, these things come with multiple voice tracks that allow
for easy substitution of a TV news person's voice, and--presto--a
"story" is done with virtually no effort, and it's all
propaganda!" What's more interesting to me, however, is that this
shows how technology is breaking down traditional barriers in all
directions. With the ongoing (somewhat annoying) debate over whether
or not bloggers are journalists, is it a fair question to ask if PR
people are journalists as well? What's becoming clear is that,
perhaps, no one is the traditional "objective" journalist - but that
anyone who takes on the role of a journalist should be prepared to
have their stories looked at with much more scrutiny by a crowd of
people who have their own voice as well.

Video Phones Won't Catch On Because
They'll Uncover Liars
01/22/2004 03:07 AMSomething of an odd prediction, suggesting that 3G video phones will
never catch on because it will
make it more difficult to lie about your location. I hadn't
realized that so many people used their mobile phones as a way of
lying about where they were. I would guess that there are plenty of
other reasons why video phones might not catch on (perhaps, for the
same reason that landline based video phones have never really caught
on - people often feel uncomfortable knowing someone is watching them
without being able to see them directly). I also wonder how many make
their buying decisions based on their ability to use the technology to
lie to people.

Easy Come, Easy Go: Antigua Loses To US
Over Gambling
04/07/2005 05:39 PMAntigua has been battling the US for some time over the US's ban on
online gambling. For many years, Antigua-based online casinos
have
run into problems with US laws. Two years ago, they went to the
WTO claiming that the US ban on online gambling was
a
violation of a fair trade agreement the two nations had signed.
It took the WTO almost exactly one year to point out that
Antig
ua was probably right. Of course, that wasn't acceptable for
politicians who seem to think gambling is pure evil (except, of
course, when it contributes to local tax coffers) -- so, while they
planned to ignore the ruling completely (we're the US, we don't follow
international rulings unless we agree with them), they did file an
appeal, just for fun. It turns out that appeal worked, and the WTO
has changed its mind, saying that
banning
gambling is a "moral issue," and therefore not subject to the fair
trade agreement the two nations signed. So, sorry for all you online
gambling addicts in the US, but you're back to breaking the law again.

12/19/2003 11:33 AMBoth drives do a fine job of simplifying backup and providing external

Virus Detection
Virus Detection
02/10/2004 07:08 AMVirus Detectionhttp://link.abpi.net/l.php?20040209A2 Researchers at
Purdue University have developed a miniature device sensitive enough
to detect a single virus particle. The device is tiny cantilever, a
diving board-like beam of silicon that naturally vibrates at a
specific frequency. When a virus particle weighing about
one-trillionth as much as a grain of rice lands on the cantilever, it
vibrates at a different frequency. The work, funded by the National
Institutes of Health, is aimed at developing advanced sensors capable
of detecting airborne viruses, bacteria, and other contaminants. Such
sensors will have applications in areas including environmental-health
monitoring in hospitals and homeland security. The next step will be
to coat a cantilever with the antibodies for a specific virus. Only
those virus particles would stick to the device, making it possible to
create detectors sensitive to specific pathogens.
