Choosing a New Cellular Phone Carrier:
Verizon Wireless
07/18/2004 08:19 PM
Background I was a reasonably happy Sprint PCS customer for the last 2.5 years or so. But ever since I moved into my new place, I've become more of a disgruntled customer. The wireless signal in my house sucks. I get one "bar" of signal strength and calls typically drop, if they work at all. And the coverage at work seems to have gone downhill too. Even on the 4th floor where my current office is, I get lots of...

Cellular Data Wars Heat Up

Cellular Data Wars Heat Up 01/09/2004 09:52 PM
Verizon Wireless said today that it will spend $1 billion over the next two years expanding its data network nationwide: Verizon's EV-DO network is already up in San Diego and Washington, D.C. and "many major" cities will get it by this summer. Alan Reiter has written a bunch about his experience using the network, which promises 300 Kbps to 500 Kbps speeds with the potential to burst to 2 Mbps. He says he usually gets around 200 Kbps and almost never as much as 2 Mbps. In response to Verizon's news, AT&T Wireless is touting how its data network compares to Verizon's. AT&T Wireless has the fastest network with the widest coverage area right now. Its EDGE network, which delivers around 100 Kbps, is available nationwide. By contrast, Verizon's nationwide 1XRTT network offers over 50 Kbps. AT&T Wireless still claims to be planning to introduce a higher speed service based on the European 3G standard in four cities by the end of this year....

Junxion Box Puts Cellular Data at
Workgroup's Disposal

Junxion Box Puts Cellular Data at
Workgroup's Disposal
06/21/2004 09:02 AM
Junxion Box acts as bridge between growing cellular data networks and the need for ubiquitous, driver-free workgroup access: In today's Seattle Times, I write about local firm Junxion which will shortly ship its Junxion Box, a small device that uplinks to cellular data networks through a PC Card, and shares the connection via built-in Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Think of it like a portable Internet feed. The Junxion Box is driver free in the sense that the company handles the software connection for several kinds of PC Cards to several national data networks. Local users connect via the LAN side--they don't have to install and configure the special PC Card drivers which are available for specific platforms with specific limitations. Temporary work sites and mobile workgroups will benefit most from the system, which is an effective modem and analog line replacement given current cell data speeds. But as cell networks increase in speed and prices continue to fall, it's likely that the Junxion Box's niche will expand as more of a broadband replacement for certain kinds of markets. I've tested a prototype of the Junxion box, and it's just as easy as the company maintains. You plug it into AC power or a DC car adapter. You wait a few moments for it to train up to the cell data network. You connect. Will cell operators allow the Junxion Box on their network, and can they do anything to stop its use? The answers seem to be maybe and no....

Your Ex-Carrier Can Stalk You

Your Ex-Carrier Can Stalk You 07/26/2004 06:02 PM
Database company Accudata has a new offering likely to annoy the hell out of many people. They're offering a service to carriers to help them track down and annoy anyone who has ditched them for a better provider. So, if you thought you had finally gotten rid of those awful "we want you back" letters by changing your phone number, your address, and possibly your name -- too bad. Accudata is on the case and going to make sure that the rest of your life (starting 24 hours from when the carrier gives them your name) you will be hounded by requests to come back to the carrier who wouldn't seem to lift a finger to help you when you actually were a customer, but preferred to charge you extra fees for just about everything. If an ex-significant other did something like this, it would be called stalking. However, apparently, in the business world, it's called "marketing." Next thing you know, your carrier will start making drunk phone calls to you at 2am wishing they had you back as a customer...
