Community WiFi summit in Denmark, 3-10
September
08/12/2004 11:21 AMThe Wireless4Development confernece (3-10 September 2004, Djursland,
Denmark) is an activist summit wherein WiFi hackers of all description
can plot the downfall of the Man and the rise of the unthethered
network.
The wireless4development seminar & workshop brings together many
of the
people who are doing exactly that. Using low-cost wireless
technologies
to bring Internet connectivity to parts of the world, and to parts of
society, where there are no real alternatives. For one week in
September, wireless and free networking activists from around the
world,
will meet up to share skills and experiences gained in some of the
most
remote regions of the world. Participants have experience from some of
the most innovative uses of Open Spectrum (license-exempt) wireless
technologies, ranging from wireless connectivity at the Mt. Everest
Base
camp, over pedal-powered connectivity in rural Laos, to connecting
local
radio stations across Mali. These projects illustrate the true power
of
low-cost, locally run wireless networks.
wireless4development will present workshops on a variety of subjects
related to wireless community networking, and brings experts from
around
the world to discuss these subjects. Presentation subjects include
Voice-over-wireless, Solar- and Bicycle-powered wireless networking
and
Mesh Network.

Digital Divide Among Kids Is Shrinking
09/17/2004 11:55 AMFor all the talk about the "digital divide" and how poorer kids
weren't getting access to the internet that would be important to
their ability to get jobs in the future, it looks like much of the
problem is going away.
Nearly all children in the US
now have some form of internet access, though, there still are
differences in how they access it. It shouldn't be much of a surprise
to find out that wealthier families are more likely to have internet
access at home for their kids. Either way, this is clearly a positive
step.

International Digital Divide Narrowing

12/04/2003 02:25 PMIt seems that every other week a report comes out saying that the
digital divide
is a problem, followed the next week by a study
saying that the digital divide isn't a problem or is going away. This
must be the second week. The UN has put out a report saying that the
digital divide among nations is
decreasing much faster than anyone anticipated. While there are
still gaps, the study found that, even in many very poor nations,
people did have access to things like a telephone, if they needed to
use it. Still, that doesn't mean the people are actually using the
technology, but it does suggest that the problem isn't one of getting
infrastructure built.

China Gets Wired... But Digital Divide
Exists
07/21/2004 02:54 AMThe internet is growing in China, as they
now have 87
million people online, though they are apparently connecting
through just 36.3 million internet connected computers. The number of
Chinese netizens puts them firmly in second place, though just about
everyone expects them to take first place before long. That 87
million represents just 6.6% of the population, which may point to a
bigger issue. While the US worries about the "digital divide," it
looks like a much bigger issue in China. Internet usage is much more
common in more developed areas, and many seem worried that less
developed areas will get left even further behind. While the Chinese
government has tried to go online, the study found that most such
sites are unused, and many government officials prefer not to use
their own websites. None of this is particularly surprising, but it's
still interesting to see the data.
