Barcodes are really cool.
11/05/2003 04:09 AM Barcodes are
really cool. This guy's
apparently historical site
generates barcodes for numerical values which are mostly used in
retail stores, but new "symbologies" have arisen since then.
Some
(Code 39 and Code 128) can translate alphanumerics, which is way fun
(you have to specify the 'T' parameter as either of the aforementioned
symbologies)!
I admit it: The new

07/01/2004 03:53 PMI am amazed daily on how far behind America is in cell phone
technology. My sister-in-law in Japan showed me a couple of years ago
how she could find information about products just by taking a picture
of it although I am not sure if she scanned a barcode or not. It Seems
Neomedia Technologies has finally
figured out that by enabling camera phone users to scan barcodes and
linking that to a net based database with product information and
price comparisons could make for a popular product.
I am all for this kind of empowerment but it just pisses me off
that America the land of the free is so damn far behind when it comes
to personal communications. [Scobleiz

« A ferry bound for Tallinn looks more like a Christmas tree
than a boat. »
The week lived up to my estimation of suck. HB had a visit with the
vet this morning and, well, his days are numbered and few. It is
somewhat bizarre when you start to discuss the process of putting a
pet, a member of the family, a friend you've had for 13 years since he
was a pup, 'to sleep'. I was relieved to know that the procedure
shares much in common with the human kevorkian protocol as there are
three stages instead of the vision I had of them going right for the
injection in the arm which HB would be utterly traumatised over since
the last time anyone got near his arm with a needle for a blood
sample, he flinched and it took 2 weeks of daily visits and cookies to
get him to allow the same again. So, I'm in a bit of a darker mood
than I was at the beginning of the week and haven't been answering my
email much either.
And, aside from the gloom report, there's a cool photo exhibit and
camera sale over at my favourite Leica shop on Uudenmaankatu,
EP-Kamera. Ukko Heikkinen's lovely photos taken around Helsinki with a
Lubitel 166 camera are on display M[12-18]-Th[11-17] and EP is and has
been selling a stock of Russian cameras, mostly FEDs as I recall, for
25 euro per kilo, yes you read that correctly, kilo. I don't
need any more cameras so someone should go buy them all soon before I
do something rash.

Every couple of years Microsoft wraps a marketing label around all the
major initiatives in the company. In 2000, the label was .NET; in
2003, Longhorn. As developers and IT managers ponder what the
"Longhorn wave" might mean to them, InfoWorld decided to assess the
current .NET wave. Its goals were many and ambitious. At the core of
.NET, the Common Language Runtime (CLR) and its associated Framework
(class library) would usher Microsoft developers into the world of
managed code, whose benefits were already well-known to their Java
counterparts. In parallel, Web services would become the pivotal
integration technology, and XML the lingua franca of data
representation. These were, and still are, the central themes. Don
Box, architect of Longhorn's Indigo communication subsystem, put it
plainly on his weblog: "We're betting that the future is managed code
and XML." [Full story at InfoWorld.com

This story, which began
thirty weblog items ago, is (at least for me) a compelling
demonstration of weblog/journalism synergy. I first tried this
approach in 1996, for a
BYTE cover
story. In the pre-blog era, NNTP newsgroups were the venue, but
it's the same principle. When you're dealing with an evergreen topic,
and you're not worried about getting scooped by the competition, why
not go ahead and outline your ideas in advance? The ensuing
conversation will clarify them, and put you in touch with people who
can share interest and expertise that you otherwise wouldn't have been
able to find.
