Wireless Stealth Wallpaper

Wireless Stealth Wallpaper 08/09/2004 11:46 AM

New Scientist reports on Frequency Selective Surface sheeting, essentially wireless security wallpaper that can contain Wi-Fi signals while allowing cell phone calls to pass through. Funded by UK telecom regulator Ofcom, BAE Systems (formerly British Aerospace) based the technology on material used to camouflage military radars. The company is now working on a transparent version to cover windows. Link

Silicon.com reports on BAE Systems's radio frequency blocking wallpaper: It's 50 to 100 microns thick and can adhere to most surfaces. It's a mesh of copper and a polymer created in a manner similar to how circuit boards are laid down. There's no timeline for commercial availability. Some versions can be switched on and off; others are permanent. [link via TechDirt]...

One of the many issues companies bring up in explaining why they won't install Wi-Fi wireless networks is the "bleeding" issue: the wireless "bleeds" beyond the walls of their building and out into the parking lot, where some creative hackers might be able to get access. Well, if someone's got a problem, someone else is likely to come along and solve it. British defense contractor BAE has taken some of that stealth bomber material they had lying around and put it up on the walls and discovered it blocks Wi-Fi. In other words, companies could put up this wallpaper and stop the Wi-Fi from bleeding out beyond the walls. Of course, I would imagine that stealth wallpaper doesn't come cheap.

On Pets TV and working wallpaper... 04/29/2004 09:07 AM

From behind the mediaguardian registration wall comes this wonderful little weird nugget of BBC-ness:

Pet TV is a service digital viewers can access by pressing the interactive red button on their remotes, for a week-long run from Saturday May 1. It is being billed by the BBC as an attempt to find out what sort of TV programmes, sounds and images animals respond to. The interactive TV service will consist of a looped series of images and sounds, including clips of snooker balls rolling across the green baize, frisbees flying through the air, cat toys and cartoon characters such as Top Cat. The service will also offer clips from more traditional TV fare, such as EastEnders, Neighbours, The Muppet Show and Animal Hospital. Pet TV can be tried out on dogs, cats, birds and even fish, according to the BBC.

Not quite sure what I think of in terms of how entertaining pets might find it, but it could be ideal ambient TV wallpaper. I'm thinking of having it on all the time...

Stealth Overclocking

Stealth Overclocking 04/12/2005 01:05 PM

There's an awful lot of overclocking out there: The Windows team at Microsoft was getting some bizarre crash reports. They followed up on 10 of them, and found that five people had intentionally overclocked their system. As for the rest:

The other half said, "What's overclocking?" He called them and walked them through some configuration information and was able to conclude that they were indeed all overclocked. But these people were not overclocking on purpose. The computer was already overclocked when they bought it. These "stealth overclocked" computers came from small, independent "Bob's Computer Store"-type shops, not from one of the major computer manufacturers or retailers.

So are these shops buying slower processings, then overclocking them and selling them as CPUs of the actual speed they've been overclocked to? Sneaky. Sleazy.

Stealth Lynndie-ing

Stealth Lynndie-ing 08/18/2004 08:54 PM
In this warped variant of steal th disco, you strike the cigarette-dangling-from-mouth, finger-points-at-exposed-prisoner-genitalia pose made famous by Pfc. Lynndie England in Abu Ghraib torture photos. As a website devoted to Stealth Lynndie-ing explains, "The image has shocked, sickened and outraged people. But more importantly, it has captured the imagination of young men and women up and down the country who don't give much of a shit about anything."

I'm not sure what's more disturbing about this online photo gallery -- (a) the fact that people are sick enough do this, photograph this, publish it on the web, and think it's funny; (b) the fact that I'm blogging about it, or (c) the fact that Lynndie England bears a striking resemblance to the fellow in the photo at left. Photo gallery featuring dozens of anonymous people "striking a Lynndie": Link (Thanks, Doug)

Stealth Ships

Stealth Ships 06/10/2004 09:52 AM

visby_ship.jpg imageThe Beeb has a short profile of the upcoming 'stealth ships' being designed by various world navies (including the U.S. and its DD(X) destroyers), focussing specifically on the Swedes' carbon fiber Visby Corvette, an angular low-profile (to radar and otherwise) ship with, among other innovations, includes a retractable 57mm cannon. Although there are many criticisms about building a 73-meter ship out of carbon fiber, some have questioned the Swedish Navy's decision to use Windows NT to control the operation of the ship, especially since, you know, that' s gone so well before. (I know it's a cheap shot, but I saw the story on Slashdot; I caught the open sores).
