Here’s one from earlier today. I knew I’d fail to get it

Outdoor Fire Detectors
Outdoor Fire Detectors
04/16/2005 10:10 AMDeadwood goes high-tech to control fires: Deadwood is as close to a tourist
mecca as you're going to get in South Dakota (not counting that
mountain with the funny designs carved in it, of course). Anything
that disrupts tourism out there is a huge, huge problem for the
regional economy.
The FireAlert-DC units, made by Ambient, are about 6 inches around,
20 inches high and sit on top of 12-foot poles. A sensor scans the
full horizon every two minutes. When it detects a growing fire, the
unit sends a signal to a satellite, which relays the information to
the company's dispatch center. It also calls the local 911 dispatcher
and fire department.

Global Hawk and X-45 as well as remotely piloted vehicles like the
Dragon Eye and Predator.

The
Nature of Normal Human Variety A talk with
Dr. Armand Leroi
(his
website).
"Almost uniquely among modern scientific problems [the problem of
normal human variety] is a problem that we can apprehend as we walk
down the street. We live in an age now where the deepest scientific
problems are buried away from our immediate perception. They concern
the origin of the universe. They concern the relationships of
subatomic particles. They concern the nature and structure of the
human genome. Nobody can see these things without large bits of
expensive equipment. But when I consider the problem of human variety
I feel as Aristotle must have felt when he first walked down to the
shore at Lesvos for the first time. The world is new again."

Altruism: The Art and Science of Interstellar Message Composition."
On March 23-24, 2003, the second in a series of international
workshops on interstellar message design will be held in Paris. The
workshop will focus on two broad themes: first, the interface of art,
science, and technology in interstellar message design; and second,
how to communicate concepts of altruism in interstellar messages. The
workshop will focus on messages that could be transmitted across
interstellar space by radio or laser signals. These communication
techniques reflect the methods used by current observational programs
in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI).

About a year ago, near my birthday, I had completely failed to
appreciate the people in my life.
I treated them with disdain, hid stuff, actively twisted truths in
order to avoid unpleasant-ness and to gain some selfish affection.
Bad. Very bad. I lost a great deal then: love, self-esteem,
friendship, to name a few.
I've since apologized, cleaned-up, and reformed. Now ...

The Human Side Of Offshoring
The Human Side Of Offshoring
01/28/2004 04:39 AMA great set of articles from the latest issue of Wired takes a look at
the outsourcing issue by taking a
closer
look at some of the people it impacts on both sides of the
debate. It's absolutely true that the offshoring process is a
terrible thing to go through for those who lose their jobs. There's
simply nothing you can say to make the situation better for them while
they go through that process. However, if their companies can't
compete, then they're going to end up losing their jobs anyway. As
one of the additional articles points out, the anger against
outsourcing is no different than the Luddite anger against computers
taking away jobs. However, as always, whether outsourcing to cheaper
labor or automation, the end result has been a net positive - opening
up plenty of new job opportunities. In fact, the article profiles one
"angry programmer" who is pushing for protectionist policies.
However, even he found a new job relatively quickly that appears to
have more challenges, more responsibility and will be a lot harder to
offshore.

The Human Cost of Outsourcing
The Human Cost of Outsourcing
05/30/2004 10:23 AMLA Times (reg req): Outsourcing Ax Falls
Hard on Tech Workers. In the months leading up to his layoff,
Cotterill was assigned to work alongside programmers from India who
are taking over tasks formerly done by Americans, a process his
company calls Knowledge Transfer, or KT.
The
callousness of American executives who force employees to train their
lower-paid replacement is amazing. I don't know how these managers can
look other people in the eye, or themselves in the mirror.
America is outsourcing itself into trouble over the long term even
though the short-term economic reasons for doing it are compelling.
Once we could tell ourselves we'd just move up the value chain, but
this won't be easy anymore.
As this nation's leaders systematically undermine public education,
disinvest in basic research and ignore powerful demographic trends --
including the new availability of several hundred million
well-educated, motivated, English-speaking workers elsewhere who are
willing to work for a quarter of what we need here to have a
middle-class existence -- they are just begging for trouble. And
running half-trillion-dollar budget deficits and historically high
trade deficits will only magnify the woes when the bills come due.
I don't have a magic answer. No one does. But if we don't start
dealing with this now, we are in for horrendously difficult times to
come.
