California Regulators Inadvertently Give
VoIP A Boost

California Regulators Inadvertently Give
VoIP A Boost
09/24/2004 03:15 AM
California regulators have agreed to let SBC raise the prices they charge to competitors who lease their lines for local telephone service. SBC can now charge $2.60 more per line. In turn, those other providers are all planning to increase their own prices $4 or $5, though no one seems to explain why they need to raise their rates twice as high as the increase in cost. SBC isn't happy because they claim this rate increase still doesn't cover their costs, and they want it to be even higher. Of course, what they don't seem to want to admit is that the higher this rate goes, the faster it's going to push people to VoIP. Apparently, no one at SBC has been noticing just how cheap VoIP services are these days. As traditional phone service gets more expensive and VoIP gets cheaper it doesn't take much for people to start to question why they're paying more than twice as much for phone service than what someone else appears to be offering (often with more features). Most people don't care about whether it's VoIP or traditional phone service. They just see the same features at a cheap price as their phone bill keeps rising, and the choice is easy.

New UK Competitive Directory Services
Give You Wrong Number 40% Of The Time

New UK Competitive Directory Services
Give You Wrong Number 40% Of The Time
11/17/2003 03:08 PM
Directory assistance services are pretty straightforward. Someone asks for the phone number of a person or business they're trying to reach, and the service gives them the phone number. There certainly is a lot of data to manage, and working through similar names is definitely an issue - but you'd still think, on the whole, that if you call a directory service system you're more likely than not to get the right number. It turns out in the UK, where they've just deregulated their directory service system it's true that you'll get the right number more often than not - but just barely. In a large test of the various directory services providers, 38% of callers were not given the right number. Ouch. And 20% of those not served properly couldn't get a refund. Of course, in a competitive situation, you would think that the services that can't get the job done would get weeded out pretty quickly by word of mouth.

AT&T Vies for VoIP

AT&T Vies for VoIP 09/23/2004 06:52 AM
AT&T is announcing a number of voice over Internet Protocol initiatives, such as a program to develop common standards for the technology and an expansion of its international VoIP remote worker pilot project. But as the company tries to draw more users to VoIP, its own research shows that concerns about the quality of service continue to dog the market as a whole.

"We are trying to answer some of the questions as to 'so what?', accelerate what can be brought in from the future, and bring forward initiatives that can be wrapped around VoIP," said Jeff Ace, vice president for global business development at AT&T, in a press briefing in London. With its traditional long-distance business under increasing competitive pressure, Ace readily conceded AT&T sees Internet calling and its associated products and services as the way for the company to open doors to new markets.

Kiwi Vies For Darwin Award

Kiwi Vies For Darwin Award 08/30/2004 01:27 PM

This is about two years old, but I ran across it on SlashDot today in the midst of the discussion of a guy that strapped a jet engine to a wheelchair (worthy of his own post). What tops that? How about this New Zealander:

Unfortunately that small quantity of ice would not keep multiple beers cold during the course of a day in the shed. And no, you cannot, not under any circumstances, put ice into the beer. No!

It was obvious I had to come up with a better solution to the problem.

I knew from some long forgotten physics lecture that when a liquid expands into a gas it will draw heat from its surroundings. And I happened to have a source of a suitable liquid right in my shed in the form of a LPG cylinder. [...] What I needed was a way to use up a lot of fuel very, very quickly.

What I needed was a jet engine!

If you're a tinkerer, this is a good one to print and give to your spouse so that they can see that you could be so much worse.
