Email: to sign or not to sign?

Email: to sign or not to sign? 01/22/2004 02:10 AM
If you participate in non-techno-geek mailing lists, and you also make a habit of "signing" your mail in compliance with the open standards articulated by RFC2015/3156, you've undoubtedly run into questions about what you're doing and possibly even criticism for doing it. At least that's been my experience over the past couple of years on mailing lists as low-tech as one dedicated to raising donkeys and mules and as high-tech as tech journalism. Well, on second thought, maybe those are both low-tech. But in any case, I've been asked to stop signing messages on both lists. The question is what to do: continue swimming upstream or give in and go with the flow?

Emergent church

Emergent church 08/05/2004 02:32 PM
AKMA successfully complicates the notion of the "emergent Church." Snippet: Any singular model of liturgical normativity came into prominence by way of a long path of emergence — so picking on emergent church for its buffet liturgical practice occludes the cafeteria past that lies behind the watershed liturgical models. Fascinating. One of the things I like about Judaism (speaking as a non-observant Jew) is the way an original text grounds it, interpretation frees it to respond to modern and cultural differences, and a tradition of discourse guides how interpretation addresses the original text....

Despite whatever certain Christian anti-porn propaganda sites would have you believe, there's ample evidence that porn, masturbation, and parody are part of the divine universal plan. Guru Karen, Bob the Sexually Suggestive Wooden Massage Implement, and the rest of the gang at ExExEx Church have made it their mission to set the record straight: "I believe that if God hated masturbation he would have made our arms short, like a Tyrannosaurus Rex."

The Church of Jobs

The Church of Jobs 04/09/2004 04:09 PM
So, I write deep and thoughtful pieces< /a> on human life, or useful technical analyses, and what do I get? A couple of comments, and no links. OK, fair enough. Nobody really cares - I can live with that.

But then I post a biased, opinionated rant about how good Mac OS X is (of which most was copied from Jeremy Zawodny), and I get on the front page of TWO major Mac newssites, and MANY comments, completely agreeing with everything I said. Not a single whiff of disagreement.

It's kinda like going into a full church and shouting "God is Great!" from the top of your lungs - and the whole congregation goes off with an ear-deafening "Hallelujah!"

Scary.

The Church of the Long Now

The Church of the Long Now 07/16/2004 01:16 AM
July 02004 I believe that the folks over at the Long Now project are onto something, although they don't seem to quite realize it. They point out that civilization has a "pathologically short attention span" and are addressing this problem by building a 10,000 year clock that "ticks once a year, bongs once a century, and the cuckoo comes out every millennium". They have a charming way of prepending a zero onto the date (so that 2004, for example, becomes 02004) to emphasize this point of view. Their goal is an admirable one - to focus humanity's attention on timescales that extend beyond a single life, but they don't seem to have thought very deeply about the underlying philosophy. I propose that the Long Now has profound implications for our species - implications that range from the mundane to the practical to the spiritual. What better way to organize and direct such implications than to form a new religion? All rational thinkers, hear me: Welcome to the Church of the Long Now.

Death Church in Poland

Death Church in Poland 12/24/2004 12:29 PM
Xeni Jardin: BoingBoing reader Kamil Antosiewicz says,

"Reading the BoingBoing post about mass tomb in Kutna Hora near Prague, I realized that here in Poland we've got a similar sacral place. It's located in a village called Czeremna, near a famous spa center called Kudowa Zdroj in lower Silesia. About 24 thousand human skulls are gathered there (3000 in a main hall, the rest in a cellar). A priest named Waclaw Tomaszek dig them out in during the XVIII century, and the chapel itself was built in the 1780s. The human remains mostly date from the 30-year war (1618-1648) and epidemic disease which killed thousands of people in that period. You can check out some pictures here: Link (the text is in polish but the pics are clickable), as well as here: Link."

PRIMATE, n. The head of a church

PRIMATE, n. The head of a church 06/24/2005 04:47 PM
POLITENESS, n. The most acceptable hypocrisy. On this day Ambrose Bierce was born in 1842 in Ohio. The author famous for The Devil's Dictionary was a Civil War vet who despite being wounded in the head moved to San Francisco where he began a successful career in journalism, writing cynical columns, fighting publisher William Randolph Hearst, and ultimately serving the first blow upon the railroad industry whose political muscle had grown obscene. A decade later, the family man whose wife was from one of the most well-to-do families in the City, dissapeared probably in Mexico never to be seen or heard from again.
