theodp writes "Not to be outdone by Amazon's 1-Click patent, Microsoft snagged a patent from the USPTO Tuesday for a Time based hardware button for application launch, which covers causing different actions to occur depending upon whether a button is pressed for a short period of time, a long period of time, or multiple times within a short period of time. So does pressing car radio buttons for different periods of time to change or set stations constitute patent infringement?" What about double-clicking? Seems like a fair amount of prior art. I know my caller ID box requires a "double-click" to delete phone numbers. Also, I may not remember correctly, but I was under the impression that Apple's famous "one-button" mouse allows you to fake a right mouse click if you hold down the button.

Click Here Now! 04/12/2005 04:23 PM
We're now pretty far along into the web-based world, and you would think that most people would recognize what a "link" is. However, it appears that a debate is still raging on as to whether or not web-based writing should include the specific call to "click here" when linking to some other webpage. While it's been a common practice in web advertising, trying to entice people to click on an ad, it probably doesn't make very much sense any more in standard web writing. People know what a link is. They know that they can click on it if they want to. Maybe some people just like ordering others around -- even online.

Click Maps 11/13/2003 09:55 PM

I'm not a very visual person; complex entity relation ship diagrams, data flow diagrams and the like are usually completely lost on me, and I try to avoid them when they are mandated by coursework at University. Give me a text based SQL schema any day. Click Maps on the other hand I could learn to like - they're nice and straight forward and solve the very real problem of planning how different parts of a web application will link to each other.

Mail and click-through

Mail and click-through 06/05/2005 11:39 PM
Apple Mail. There’s more.

The new toolbar does the icons-inside-buttons thing, which makes sense, and may be a usability gain.

However, here’s a weird thing I noticed:

When Mail is not the frontmost app, the buttons change their look: they look dimmed, disabled.

Mail New button in background

However, if you click, it’s actually enabled, it supports click-through. (This is true for non-destructive buttons, not all of the buttons.) Right before you click you see the mouse-over highlighting.

Mail New button in background

It turns out that the icon inside the button is used to indicate whether it’s enabled or not. Standard toolbars dim and un-dim the icon too—it’s just that they don’t also have a button being used to indicate status (sorta).

So the dimmed button look means “I’m in the background” rather than “I’m disabled.”

Safari’s icons are similar in that the icon rather than the button indicates status—but they don’t have a special dimmed in-the-background look, which I think confuses things in Mail.

Very impressive for a debut issue; worth a look for those who enjoy capturing the world one RAW file at a time.

Offshoring... To Click On Ads

Offshoring... To Click On Ads 05/03/2004 04:44 PM
For all the talk of offshoring labor, it seems that many in India have answered "earn rupees clicking ads" advertisements found (ironically enough) on Google, which basically pay people to sit at home and clic k on advertisements on specific websites to help those sites earn more pay-per-click ad dollars. This, of course, is always the risk with any sort of pay-per-click advertising scheme. Those who stand to make money are always going to look for ways to increase the clicks. While it's easy to pick out automated clickers, having a network of people around the world who are paid to click the ads could be a lot trickier. Of course, this may remind some people of dot-com bubble companies like AllAdvantage - but at least in that (failed) case, advertisers knew what they were getting involved with. If such fraudulent clicks continue on content sites for advertising networks, it could noticeably decrease the value of such ads.

The Limitations Of Pay Per Click

The Limitations Of Pay Per Click 06/07/2004 12:04 PM
With the rise of Google's advertising system, it seems that everyone is focused (yet again) on the "pay-per-click" model of advertising. While pay-per-click is great in many situations, it shouldn't be the only model for advertising. For example, advertising isn't always about creating action immediately. It can be used for brand building, so that someone may return to the company or product at a later date. Therefore you can have an effective ad that never gets clicked (just as you can have an ineffective ad that does get clicked - such as one that seems interesting, but turns out to be poorly targeted). Another issue with pay-per-click is that it doesn't do well when the point of the ad is to try to get someone to call. Now, a few companies are working on ways to measure calls that were started via online ads. One company is basically setting up specific phone numbers to be advertised online so they can track how many calls come from the online ads. Another company has a system where you do click through the ad, but it can then establish a phone call with the company. Clearly, we're getting beyond just click-based performance metrics, but there's still a way to go.
