Adobe has released a Ph otoshop CS update that fixes two bugs which occur when the application is used in Mac OS X v.10.2.4 or higher on Macs with multiple processors. One problem caused image corruption when rotating bitmap images while the other issued a program error when using the Magic Wand tool. Both are now fixed with this update, which is a free download from the Adobe Web site for registered users (an Adobe ID is required). The company notes that it won't have an effect on Macs with configurations other than the one cited.

Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Bridge

Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Bridge 06/17/2005 07:13 PM

For most graphic artists, Adobe's applications are their bread and butter. Adobe Creative Suite 2 recently hit the streets, but is it worth paying the price to upgrade? We have a comprehensive look at Photoshop CS2 along with Bridge, an image browser which "connects" the Creative Suite 2 applications.

In Photoshop 7, Adobe added a file browser to Photoshop and let it chill for two versions seeing if it would get better with age (it didn't). It was a good idea but weird in Photoshop, a really document-centric program. Now, they've taken it out of Photoshop, made it an independent program to act as a connector between apps much like say, a concrete passageway or a road above water.

It makes a lot more sense this way since it was really out of place as a floating window inside the Photoshop interface. Adobe has added a favorites and collections pane in addition to the basic file system browsing, chocked it full of features to interact with other Adobe apps and added an interactive thumbnail zoom that works much like iPhoto's.

Of course, there are plenty of other apps on both Windows and Mac OS X that perform the same function (GraphicConverter represent!). Is the combination of some spiffy new features in Photoshop CS2 and the new Bridge enough to make an upgrade worthwhile? There's only one way to find out...

Discussing what it calls a "significant hole," ABCnews asserts that a security issue affecting both Jaguar and Panther versions of OS X announced last month means that the "Mac OS is just as vulnerable as Microsoft Windows." While no operating system can claim to be perfectly secure, OS X and Unix variants in general are more secure than Windows by design, because Unix was created for a networked, multiple user environment, and Windows was created to operate on...

Conferences with Macs

Conferences with Macs 04/09/2004 04:08 PM

Three reasons Macs make excellent companions to geek-centric conferences:

  1. iChat and Rendezvous. iChat uses Rendezvous (aka zero configuration networking) to automatically display a list of all other iChat users on the same network as you. In a conference setting this can be a great way of seeing who's around - I met a couple of people at SxSW who I'd been hoping to run in to by co-ordinating a metting via iChat. A few panelists even used iChat to take questions during their panels. Here's a screenshot of iChat Rendezvous taken during SxSW.
  2. SubEthaEdit, which really has to be seen to be believed. I made a half hearted attempt to get a SubEthaEdit session going at SxSW but failed to achieve critical mass. Ted Leung at PyCon seems to have got it sussed.
  3. EtherPEG. This isn't as essential as the other two but can be a lot of fun - it's an ethical (as in it doesn't steal anything important) network sniffer which displays a selection of images currently being transferred across the network. It provides an often surreal insight in to the browsing habits of other conference goers.

I remember hearing Mac owners complain of being treated like second-class citizens. I haven't felt like that once in nearly three months of owning a Mac.

It could also be mistaken for a 1950's-era toaster. Somebody ought to fill Alienware in on the fact that good design costs no more than bad design. And producing professional looking hardware — like the Apple G5 PowerMac — is probably less expensive than all the cheesy plastic eye candy.

I got a Mac and it sucks 03/08/2004 11:11 PM
I just spent an hour on the phone with my father-in-law failing to help him find his email client. It used to be there, but it vanished from the tool bar at the bottom. Now we can't get it back. None of the Finder options seem to actually help us find anything. I know it's there. I know it's "easy." But it sure ain't intuitive. Anyone want to give me the most basic instruction about how to find things on the !@#$% Mac, OS X? As Dr. Dean would say, "Aaaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhh!" Sometimes it sucks to be a Geek

Sometimes it sucks to be a Geek 09/20/2004 02:53 AM

My wife and I went to a work related party last night which turned out to be pretty boring. So much for the $70.00 spent on tickets. We left early and knew that the sitter was good to go decided to drop in on a friend of hers.

We get to her house and I am admiring her house and see a big Master Degree in Education hanging over her computer. I was surprised to see it actually as we have known her for a while and she had never mentioned it. Anyway to make a long story short she says hey my PC is having problems can you look at it.

You guessed it 2 hours later and much under breath cursing I give up and tell her I need to take it home or we can just pull the restore disk out and start from scratch. I get this deer in the headlights look when I explain that her computer has been hijacked and is infected with nearly every piece of spyware known to man.

1. Virus Definitions 2 years old
2. She had never run Windows Update.
3. Systems is plugged directly into cable modem
4. No Spyware detection software
5. No Firewall

Remember now she has a Masters Degree in Education. She commented I should open a business and fix peoples computers like hers. I guess my 21+ years working with advanced electronics now makes me qualified to fix computers. I suppose I could charge her $750.00 for a days worth of work. All I could do was smile and say drop it by the house and I will get it fixed for you...

All my wife could say when we left was sorry. I hate stupid educated people. Sometimes being a geek sucks.

Monroe County Family Court Judge Marilyn O'Connor ruled March 31 that two parents "should not have yet another child which must be cared for at public expense."
Unconstitutional? Maybe. But not sufficiently so for the NY ACLU to say much anything about it. Maybe the Judge could have recommended the same sex-ed scheme that shows, in parts of England and Wales where it [called A Pause] was trialled in 104 schools, sexual intercourse among 16-year-olds fell by up to 20 per cent. Now that may mean we have to have more discussion of oral and manual, with less genital-genital emphasis. Anything that promotes the right to say 'no' amongst vulnerable young folks is alright by me.

Why JSP Sucks So Hard

Why JSP Sucks So Hard 12/19/2002 11:43 PM
once again my UI engineers will be taking perfectly good HTML written in Dreamweaver and tearing it apart, throwing out some of it and rewriting other parts of it, just to make it work with the JSP they're writing. Once they're done, the HTML author will have absolutely no clue what the page does any more, and will have no desire or ability to edit it. When we insist that no really we need this redesigned, we'll spend twice as long doing it (doubling our costs, negative ROI, bad technology choice, yadda yadda yadda) since the HTML author will need that long to write in sample data and then have the JSP author tear it out again. -- Marc Hedlund

ARGH, MY MAC SUCKS!

ARGH, MY MAC SUCKS! 05/12/2004 08:23 AM
How do I turn on the screensaver with a key combination!?! I don't want to use the hot corners (I already have them overloaded with Exposé and I want to have the top left corner free so I don't have to worry about counting pixels when I try and access the Apple menu), but so far the best way to lock the Powerbook is to go and turn the lid down and then back up again. which turns on the screen saver (and stops iTunes, BTW, since the computer goes to sleep for a second).

I know there are Mac people reading me, so please: tell me which key combination I have to use, or which freeware application I have to install to just be able to press Apple-F12 to lock the computer! I've been trying to find the info from Google, but apparently I haven't been able to figure out the right keywords.

Frustrated now!

(Sorry for the headline, just wanted to grab your attention there. My Mac Powerbook does NOT suck, it is a wonderful little machine and I grow more attached to it every day. It is by far the best computer I've ever owned. I just need this one thing to make it perfect. Please?)

Passym sucks

Passym sucks 01/22/2004 03:17 AM

Tonight is my second night in an Embassy Suites with Passym Wireless internet access, and I have to say that Passym really sucks.

Connectivity is just horrible. I don't know why the service sucks so badly... it might be because I'm in a corner room (they're larger at the Embassy Suites) or it might be because I'm using a Macintosh, but neither of those two things should be reasons that the connectivity sucks so badly...

Maybe there are too many people using the service to keep up with what I want to do, but that shouldn't be a problem. I've normally stayed in Wyndham and Marriot hotels with Wayport access, and even though most of the time those hotels only provide wired access, they always worked just fine. I could connect to my office's VPN at the most complicated end of connectivity issues, and I could definitely send email through my own servers, but with this silly Passym service, I can't connect to the VPN and I can't even send email through my own service... and the speeds are terribly slow compared to what I expect them to be... especially at $10/day.

The worst part is that to get technical support, I'm supposed to email their support@ email address... no one here at the hotel knows anything about the service from a technical/troubleshooting stand-point, and I can't get email out through my email client. Good thing I have a webmail client set up on my server...

So, next time I stay in a hotel, I'll ask them if they have internet access, and I'll ask who the provider is. If it's Passym, I'll choose a different hotel if internet connectivity will be a need.
