Toshiba SD-P5000 15-Inch Not A Monitor
Toshiba SD-P5000 15-Inch Not A Monitor
06/24/2004 09:47 AM
My first thought
after seeing this 15-inch LCD panel with DVD from Toshiba was, "Of
course! A decent VGA monitor that doubles as a somewhat portable movie
player. How lovely. I need a snack," but as I looked at it, it seemed
as if it actually doesn't have VGA ins, so ... why not? It absolutely
kills me to have all these perfectly decent LCD televisions unable to
accept a VGA signal. In the past, sure, it made sense. Television CRTs
were huge but had awful resolution and computer CRTs were small and
had high resolution, but that's increasingly not the case. Anyway,
just as I got really confused, I noticed this diagram at the bottom,
which if I'm interpreting correctly means the Toshiba SD-P5000 can,
through a series of intricate MPEG encodings and I/P processes, turn a
DVD into a fish. Oh, okay then, no VGA forgiven.

backlit LCD monitor
05/24/2004 10:32 AMNEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display of America Inc. on Monday
introduced a new 21.3-inch LED backlit LCD monitor aimed at desktop
publishing, pre-press and other professional markets looking for high
color fidelity in a large-format LCD display. The new monitor features
1600x1200 native resolution, 500:1 contrast ratio and 190cd/m2
brightness; it sports VGA and DVI inputs. The display uses LED
backlight technology made by Lumileds Lighting, which NEC-Mitsubishi
said helps achieve 109 percent gamut for Adobe RGB color space.
Pricing was not announced, but NEC-Mitsubishi said to expect the new
display to hit stores in the fourth calendar quarter of 2004.
NEC-Mitsubishi's Web site was not updated with information about the
new display as MacCentral posted this article.

06/24/2004 09:47 AM
The only bad thing I can say
about BenQ's new FP231W large-screen LCD monitor is that my video card
might not have the polygonal prowess needed to pump out 1,920 by 1,200
pixels worth of videogame. However, if there were one sitting on my
desk here -- and I'm cleaning off a little spot, actually, just so it
knows that it would be welcome to stay over -- I would take the
23-inch, 16ms flat panel and a favorite game and try. Sure, we
might drop some frames here and there, "chug" some of you kids call
it, but we'd be trying something new together, which is beautiful,
really, and although it might be a little awkward at first, I'm sure
we'd both learn to make it work.

06/28/2004 06:08 PMBut perhaps in the real world, this note could be worth a lot
more-“During the past year, Microsoft has taken a number of
important steps to help curb the epidemic of junk email, which is a
major headache for computer users worldwide. We’ve made
significant progress, including blocking more than 95 percent of all
incoming junk mail - an average of 3 billion messages a day - on
Hotmail. But more work remains to be done. We’re committed to
finding additional ways to counter this costly nuisance.Over the next
12 months, we will begin to introduce several additional innovative
technologies and processes that should further reduce the volume of
junk email reaching customers’ inboxes. Because you’ve
subscribed to receive executive emails from us, I’d like to
update you on what we’re doing in this area. On the Web at
www.microsoft.com/execmail, I’ve posted an in-depth explanation
of Microsoft’s technology vision and strategy for ending the
junk email epidemic as a major problem. I hope you’ll take a few
minutes to read it.Thank you.Bill Gates”Now, we’ve all
seen those hoax chain letters, but this came from Microsoft (as far as
I can tell). Considering the content, it looks genuine. I invite you

DAPreview reports
on a new 1.5GB hard disk-based mp3 player from Teac called the MP-1000
which looks, all things considered, remarkably uninteresting. It does
play OGG Vorbis, if that's your thing, and manages to include an
FM-tuner and USB 2.0 -- which is notable only because of the
surprising amount of modern players that still putter along over USB
1.1. I don't think many people care about the 1.5GB players with the
4GB players so abundant, but as long as it's cheap, it might stand a
chance.
