Go, Rev, go! “Ordained minister Don Parris has plenty of experience spreading the good word — about Linux. Parris is planting a new church in Charlotte, N.C., the Matheteuo Christian Fellowship. Matheteuo translates to ‘make disciples,’ and Parris has extended this directive to include Linux disciples. His PDF book, Penguin in the Pew has been downloaded more than 1,000 times. Additionally, Parris has launched a computer training class as part of Matheteuo’s educational ministry. The class teaches word processing skills and computer literacy, enabling students to apply their knowledge to several different applications and computer tasks — regardless of the operating system.”

Let's Ban Municipal Networks Nationwide

Let's Ban Municipal Networks Nationwide 06/05/2005 10:56 PM
Anti-Federalism rears its ugly head with Rep. Sessions's bill: The bill would ban municipal networks where any competitive service existed in the municipal area of governance. A grandfather clause allows existing services to proceed. The language of the "Preserving Innovation in Telecom Act of 2005" is so hilariously broad and ill-defined that it could kill all kinds of projects that the incumbent carriers this is meant to protect would support or are involved in deploying. It has such a broad grandfather clause that it could allow massive projects to continue if even a tiny portion of the service was in use. I doubt it will go anywhere because in its current form, it's a shotgun full of buckshot, not a surgical weapon. A broad consortium of businesses and public policy groups will certainly try to get it killed. I doubt it will get many supporters because of its broad sweep. For instance, this bill would kill all future airport Wi-Fi that's not already built out because government entities would be unable to "provide" services if Wi-Fi were operating anywhere else in the airport authority's municipality's domain. It's pretty easy to read that interpretation....

Nationwide scream when W speaks at the
RNC

Nationwide scream when W speaks at the
RNC
08/27/2004 10:54 PM
Cory Doctorow: Al Franken wants you to holler on September 2 when W takes the stage at the RNC.
On September 2nd, 2004, at approximately 10 pm, George W. Bush will appear on television screens nationwide. For some of our fellow citizens, this will be a moment of joy. But for most of us, it will be the low point of an incredibly exasperating week.

Until now, there have been only two options: miss the speech (either by screaming at the television or turning it off), or bottle up the frustration within us, causing irreparable psychological harm. The first option is unbecoming of citizens in a democracy. The second option is just terrible. But now, for the first time, we have a better way. At the moment we see the president on our television screens, we will rise. We will throw open our windows. And, as George W. Bush moves to the podium in New York City, we will send him a message about his bid for reelection: we will yell, "fuggedaboudit!"

This will be a peaceful, non-disruptive protest. We will stop yelling before the president starts speaking. Our goal is not to drown him out, but to communicate. (And vent.)

France to Get Nationwide WiMax

France to Get Nationwide WiMax 09/23/2004 03:18 PM
Altitude Telecom, the only owner of a nationwide 3.5 Ghz license in France, plans to use Alvarion gear to build a broadband wireless network in the country: The Alvarion gear is based on WiMax, though not yet certified as WiMax because the certification process hasn't started yet. Altitude will start out with four counties and move on from there. It's interesting to note that Altitude plans to use the wireless network to serve small to large businesses. That target market is the same market that broadband wireless operators have traditionally targeted. WiMax, however, has often been touted as a DSL replacement that could be used to serve the residential market. Perhaps Altitude will use the next generation of WiMax gear to target the residential market....
