Some American colleges and universities received anticipated
letters this week from
Acacia Media , requesting the payment of licensing fees for
streaming media. The firm
has sent letters to dozens of colleges in recent days claiming the
schools' use of streaming video in areas like distance learning and
video lectures violates company patents. The message: pay up, or risk
getting sued.
"Certainly for colleges that do a lot of distance education, this
could be a major problem," said Steve Worona, director of policy and
networking programs at EDUCAUSE...
Acacia has been campaigning
for fees for streaming media, for which it claims several patents as its intellectual
property .

Streaming and On-Demand Video
12/17/2004 06:34 PMToday, we look at Digital Rights Management. A key question here is:
"Should you distribute your video online?" Movie industry figures who
have watched what happened in the music industry with Napster and its
successors are determined not to find themselves in a similar
predicament. When a movie studio invests $50 million in a film, it
wants to be quite sure the work is not going to be passed around Kazaa
and BitTorrent like so many MP3s. By Pearson Education, Inc. 1025

05/19/2004 01:14 PMA Dutch company that is trying to offer streaming videos of DVDs
claims that they can do this without authorization from the movie
studios because they're
doi
ng the same exact thing as a movie rental shop. They basically
say that they're shipping a legal "personal copy" (allowed under Dutch
law) to a user's set-top box which they watch and then "return."
Chances are this is unlikely to fly in court, and it won't take long
for the entertainment industry's lawyers to come knocking.

artifact duplication dispute
04/28/2004 10:20 AMA Chinese gamer who bought a sword that was deleted by the game-host
because it had been duplicated by the seller is suing the game-host to
reinstate his sword and apologise. As Terra Nova's Dan Hunter says,
"Virtual property, duping, and fraud. Heaven."
After many hours of playing the game, he earned 140 million units of
game money, which he spent buying a powerful sword from another player
through an online trading platform provided by the operator in
November.
On November 16, he found the sword had been deleted from his account.
After contacting Optisp several times, he was told that the sword was
deleted because it was illegally duplicated.
He is asking the court to order Optisp to give back his sword, which
he estimates is worth 1,000 yuan (US$120) in real money, and
apologize.
