Apple has announced that the iPod mini is finally going to be shipping internationally on July 24th. Worldwide demand has been at a fever pitch, but Apple has previously had trouble just providing enough units for the United States, let alone the rest of the world. Looks like those troubles have gone away ... for now. (Not that I know anything. I just like being ominous.)

Press release after the jump.

Simtec's Mini-ITX ARM Board

Simtec's Mini-ITX ARM Board 10/31/2003 10:37 AM
Simtec has released a new Mini-ITX board based on the Samsung S3C2410, a 200MHz ARM920T SOC. The board requires 3.3 volts at 600ma (3 watts). It's got some interesting I/O including the usual PC-type stuff like Ethernet, USB, five serial, parallel, IR, audio, and video. But it also includes some I/O of the type that's crucial to robot builders: I2C, 50 GPIO lines, LCD, JTAG, 8x13 keyboard matrix connector, and even a PC104 expansion connecter. It seems to lack any A/D inputs however. It runs Linux, of course and includes A Debian GNU gcc tool chain. Full documentation and a gallery of photos can be found on the Simtec website. The only downside is the price: $425 per unit. The VIA Technologies EPIA M10000 combined with an external I/O subprocessor like the IsoPod still wins on price.

A mini-guide to Mac OS X for new Mini

A mini-guide to Mac OS X for new Mini
owners
02/01/2005 08:53 PM

Apple finally went and released an inexpensive computer. With the advent of the Mac mini, some Windows and Linux users who have been curious about Mac OS X but turned off by Apple's high prices have finally bit the bullet and ordered a mini.

Trying an unfamiliar operating system can be irritating at times. Things are not where you expect them to be, the GUI is different, and connecting to servers and other PCs can be frustrating. Hence the mini-guide.

This is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to all things OS X. Its purpose is to help those new to the operating system do simple things, like use a Windows printer, connect to a network share, and figure out what the key with the funny-looking squiggle on it next to the spacebar does (or even use your PC keyboard with a Mac). So if you're an "adder" and are feeling a bit out of sorts, check out our guide.

Either the Mini isn't supported any longer, or, more likely, someone within BMW's marketing department didn't want to dillute the Beemer brand with their low-end cousin. Whichever -- it's still been removed from the site.

QuickTopic: Free Bulletin Boards (Message Boards) and Collaborative Document Review Groupware
http://www.quicktopic.com/

There's a major gap in collaboration tools between plain old email and more complex, long-term solutions like multi-threaded web bulletin boards or mailing lists, and QuickTopic fills that gap. For any substantial group discussion, email is cumbersome. A conversation thread is scattered among email in-boxes, and there's no central respository to capture it. Heavyweight collaboration systems require complex setup and registration and/or learning by participants. QuickTopic fills the gap by providing a super-easy single-topic web forum that's also fully email-enabled. You can start a topic in ten seconds, and participants can use just email to participate, or they can use the web board, or both as the need arises. It's like an instant mailing list with a web-based archive, or it's like an easy web forum that works seamlessly with email. Each topic also has its own RSS feed, accessible by simply appending ".rss" to the topic's URL! This has been added to the tool section of Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

At Siggraph today, AMD announced that AMD Opteron™ processor-based servers and workstations are providing the digital backbone for the final Star Wars prequel, Episode III: “Revenge of the Sith.”

The AMD64 digital processing pipeline at JAK Films, the production company for Star Wars: Episode III, includes pre-visualization and pre-postproduction, which involves 3-D match moving, 3-D modeling, lighting, shading, texturing, compositing and rendering techniques. The AMD64 processor-based workstation systems are running Microsoft® Windows® XP Pro, Alias’ Maya and Adobe® After Effects software. AMD64 processor-based file server systems are running on clustered Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 software.

The full adoption of 64-bit capable AMD Opteron processor-based systems at JAK Films is the result of a long-standing relationship between AMD and the pioneering Pre-Visualization department at JAK Films. The relationship began during the making of Star Wars: Episode II and provided AMD with direct feedback from the world’s foremost digital content creators. JAK Films is now using AMD64 technology to reinvent the digital filmmaking process.
