Apple Makes Just $.04 Per Track

Apple Makes Just $.04 Per Track 09/24/2004 05:32 PM
UK newspaper, The Independent has uncovered data suggesting that Apple make as little as $0.04 per track sold. Apple operates iTunes in the US and Europe, which is the largest legal music download provider. The investigation concludes that because record companies are taking such a large percentage from online sales, many companies will go out of business within years due to lack of profits.

Copyright holders, most often the recording industries, take as much as 60% of the $.99 that Apple charge for each song on iTunes. Music Publishers take the rest, amount to about $.08 per song. The report highlights the fact that even though online publishing has virtually killed costs, record companies have almost doubled their take from each song sold.

Record companies need to wake up to the fact that high prices are going to cause even more problems in the long run. Legitimate downloads have helped stop the tide of music piracy, and to over-price the songs would be disastrous. They desperately need to start thinking long term about this issue. Although Apple has the iPod to help shore up revenues, others do not; market analysts predict that many of the music download start-ups coming to market in the next 12 months could be bankrupt within 5 years. Michael Robertson from MP3.com told the Independent that online music providers are so un-profitable that it's more of "a race where the winner gets shot in the head".

The Bluetooth adapter had to be ordered at the time of purchase while the AirPort Extreme Card could be installed later. By including these wireless options even in the entry-level $1,600 12-inch PowerBook G4 model, Apple is competing more directly and simply against the Centrino concept. From now on, Apple hopes that buyers think PowerBook and wireless the way that Intel has branded Centrino and Wi-Fi....

press conference by George W. Bush

Love is hate War is peace No is yes And we're all free

Why, by Tracy Chapman

Reading the transcript of George w. Bush's press conference tonight (I couldn't bear to watch it), Tracy Chapman's song kept running through my head. It seemed like Bush had a script of 5 points he set out to make, and he kept on making them in response to the questions, no matter how inane they sounded. It was amazing the number of logical fallacies he committed in the course of one press conference, but just as amazing is the fact that as a body politic, we don't expect our representatives to be able think and speak logically. Still, I can't resist noting a few of the more egregious offenses against logic and reality.

it's hard to say the United States is defiant about the United Nations when I was the person who took the issue to the United Nations September the 12th, 2002. We've been working with the United Nations. We've been working through the United Nations.
vs.
I'm confident the American people understand that when it comes to our security, if we need to act, we will act. And we really don't need United Nations approval to do so.

Refocusing Peace 03/20/2003 05:32 PM
Grant Henninger is suggesting that the peace movement refocus its message since obviously we're not going to prevent the war. Instead, Grant suggests, we should focus on limiting civilian casualties and ensuring that we step up to our responsibility to rebuild Iraq afterwards. I'm in favor of both of Grant's points, but I think there is a point to continuing to protest the war itself: It tells the government that we don't all fall into a line when a war is declared, and it tells the world that not all Americans believe this war is worth the death and instability...

Crazy Shoppers

Hullut Pivt is the bi-annual sale at Stockmann's Department Store in Helsinki which comes just before Easter in the Spring and and at the end of October in the Autumn. The sale lasts three days and most sane people avoid going near the store until after the madness has subsided. I had the Leica and so I thought I'd try to capture a little bit of the insanity on film by walking around while trying not to be noticed.

Everywhere you look there are yellow banners and menacing looking ghosts. In the US, parents would probably be suing the store for such scary ghosts being displayed when it's not even Halloween. The mannequins get draped in yellow cloth with eyes taped on to look like a flock of really tall trick-or-treaters. Mylar balloon ghosts, employees in costume, people pawing over tables piled with stuff and announcers saying something into a microphone which sounds like you're at the drive-thru window make the whole scene pretty chaotic. I had fun lurking around with the camera and trying to take photos of the better costumes until one rather irate cashier started yelling at me in English and then switched to Finnish because I must have looked so startled she must have thought I didn't understand English. :)

Lots of people claim that there really aren't any deals or good sales during the 3 days of mayhem but I don't think that's really the purpose of the whole show. Shoppers flock to Stockmann's as a good excuse to head into the city, look at some of the random new items the store buys just for the sale and then go to a movie or the theatre. Some shoppers take the event really seriously though, so when you see yellow ghost Stockmann bags downtown, walk away from the store unless you enjoy watching a piranha feeding frenzy. :)

"When stewardesses were sexy and the world was sexist" is the tagline of this years-in-making musical by Suzy Conn, who also runs the blogway baby musicals log (which talks about this musical quite a bit). It's meant to be based around the early 1960's, when airlines were truly a luxury, not unlike a sea cruise or a first-class train ride pre-Amtrak. (The website spends some time going on about Braniff International, and it's worth it to check out the history of that airline. This is also laid out on top of the era of Women's Liberation, although it does so using the aesthetic of 1960's music and phraseology, which was, basically, designed by male-dominated hollywood. For everyone who sits in the cheap seats, if you let the flash animation at the beginning of the site load, it plays the entire opening title song for you. Hey, free show!
