http:

Abstract:
Ambient intelligence appears poised
to cause remarkable changes in the way people live. With digital
information, the ease of interaction between humans and computers can
be greatly increased by broadening the interface media available and
allowing for mobile and portable communication free of inhibiting
wires and stationary units. Additionally, some forms of ambient
intelligence allow computers to adapt to their user's preferences. The
result of ambient intelligence is ultimately a more empowered computer
with the benefits of added convenience, time and cost savings, and
possibilities for increased safety, security, and entertainment. This
technology has the potential to significantly impact business and
government processes, as well as private life. The paper describes
developments to date in ambient intelligence and its closely related
counterpart, ubiquitous computing and communication. It discusses the
driving forces behind this digital information technology, describes
the equipment and devices involved, the obstacles to implementing
ambient intelligence on a large scale in real-world scenarios, and
considers the future outlook. The authors believe that the
introduction of this digital information technology will have
wide-ranging implications, which will for the most part be beneficial
and valuable. This has been added to

science and engineering of Artificial Intelligence has come a long way
since 1950, when scientists began to explore the link between human
intelligence and machines. Since then, computer scientists have made
advances in creating machines that can engage in human-like behaviors,
mimic human thought, understand speech, and beat the best human
chessplayer. Applications are far and wide, from military technology
to personal cell phones. This Topic In Depth reviews some of the past
accomplishments, current research and future challenges in AI. John
McCarthy from the Computer Science Department at Stanford University
has posted this article answering some common questions people have
about Artificial Intelligence, including the implications of this work
for the meaning of intelligence. (1). This next website (part of a
ThinkQuest website competition) gives a history of AI among other
interesting tidbits about different approaches and applications (2).
The Turing Test Page elaborates on Alan Turing's conditions for
considering a machine to be intelligent, which he outlined in a 1950
article that is also available from this website (3). The Singularity
Institute describes itsambitious plan to develop "real AI" (4). The
New Scientist highlights some applications for AI which range from the
traditional to new wave (5). On a lighter note, this webpage by IBM is
dedicated to Deep Blue and the event that captured the attention of
chess and computer fans -- the rematch between the supercomputer, Deep
Blue, and Kasparov (6). Ai Research has made their HAL Nursery
available to the public -- a collection of "Virtual Children" you can
interact with online. (7). [From The NSDL Scout Report for Math,

07/10/2004 12:38 PMNY Times: The
Senate Report. The panel's investigation into how President
Bush handled the intelligence has been postponed until after the
election. But the bottom line already seems pretty clear. No one had
to pressure analysts to change their findings because the findings
were determined before the work started. By late 2002, you'd have had
to have been vacationing on Mars not to know what answer Mr. Bush
wanted. The planning for war had begun. The C.I.A. was under enormous
pressure over getting it wrong before 9/11. And the hawkish defense
secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, wanted to set up his own intelligence
agency to get the goods on Iraq that the wishy-washy C.I.A. couldn't
seem to deliver.

tp://goanna.cs.rmit.edu.au/~xiaodong/cec04-swarm/index.htmSuch systems are made up by a population of simple agents
interacting locally with one other and with their environment.
Although there is typically no centralised control dictating the
behaviour of the agents, local interactions ong the agents often cause
a global pattern to emerge. Examples of systems like this can be found
in nature, including ant colonies, bird flocking, animal herding,
honey bees, bacteria, and many more. Swarm-like algorithms, such as
Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO),
have already been applied successfully to solve real-world
optimization problems in engineering and telecommunication. SI models
have many features in common with Evolutionary Algorithms.

EI/EI.htmlThese pages show how to construct a dynamic
virtual world of complex and interacting genes, genomes, organisms and
populations that compete against one another in a rigorous selection
regime in which fitness is judged by one criterion alone:
intelligence. The genetic architecture underlying this evolutionary
system is versatile, creative and powerful enough to engender a
practically infinite variety of data processing and analysis
capabilities, adaptable to almost any conceivable intellectual task.
This virtual world could witness the emergence of our first learning,
thinking machines, and provide a rich opportunity to study the nature
of intelligence and foray into a vast, untapped technological market.

The
wisdom of crowds and
the miracle of aggregation, arguably, are
the reasons why
markets and

New Yorker
James Surowiecki explains in his
new book, "consider the show
Who Wants to
Be a Millionaire. When a contestant on the show is stumped by a
question, he has a couple of choices in asking for help: the audience
or someone he's designated as an expert. The experts do a reasonable
job: They get the answer right 65% of the time. But the audience is
close to perfect: It gets the answer right 91% of the time, even
though it's made up of people who have nothing better to do than sit
in a TV studio and watch Regis Philbin."

Toto Intelligence Toilet

Toto's new "Intelligence Toilet" system brings health
measurements only a bathroom away. For mere thousands of dollars, the
Intelligence Toilet system will measure urine sugar, blood pressure,
body fat and weight on a daily basis. Since there is very little human
intervention required, it's almost lazy enough for me to use. The data
can be transferred over a home network too, for viewing on your PC.
Sony Online Entertainment has announced the next version of Everquest
will interface with this as well, so creating an in-game likeness of
yourself is as easy as going to the bathroom.

The Limits of Artificial Intelligence
The Limits of Artificial Intelligence
12/19/2004 03:41 PMA new ACM
Ubiquity article addresses what the author, Alexandru
Tugui, believes are limitations of artificial intelligence that
cannot be overcome. The article is primarily concered with AI as a
simulation of biological intelligence rather than with the creation of
real machine intelligence. Even so, some of his objections seem a bit
odd, such as the claim that AI can never truly simulate biological
intelligence because it is limited to 1s and 0s whereas biological
intelligence can have intermediate values. A CD player is a computer
that deals only with 1s and 0s, yet it seems to simulate analog music
quite easily.
