Casey Mears Wins Brickyard 400 Pole (AP) 08/07/2004 03:39 PM

AP - Casey Mears grew up dreaming about winning poles and races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He just never pictured doing it in a stock car. On Saturday, Mears took a big step in his budding NASCAR Nextel Cup career, and the first step toward emulating the Indianapolis success of uncle Rick Mears, by winning the pole for the Brickyard 400.

Cory Doctorow: Telltale Weekly, which sells DRM-free audiobooks of public domain works, has just posted a $0.50 version of "Casey at the Bat" and two "sequels" written by a different writer, hearkening to an era when copyright didn't mean that others couldn't fool around with your work.
Ernest L Thayer (writing under the pen name "Phinn") wrote the baseball classic Casey at the Bat: "A Ballad of the Republic, Sung in the Year 1888" for the San Fransisco Examiner. In the century since, the poem has spawned hundreds of sequels, including a handful of updates by sports columnist Grantland Rice.

My Back Pages--Interesting in his own right Eyolf Østrem still maintains the fan's fan tab, chords and music site, the standard by which all others are judged. I just revisited it the other night, while trying to recall how that little run in Dylan's version of Delia went, and dang, if it didn't have the back story of that ballad. I love this kind of stuff. The source of that account, John Garst, is the folklorist king of such research--he puts John Henry at a railroad tunnel near Leeds, Alabama, just east of Birmingham on September 20, 1887, for example. Murder and heroic death ballad back stories are of extreme interest to me, so I decided to post a few more here: Frankie and Albert, Frankie and Johnny, Casey Jones and Stagger Lee. Did I say I love this kind of stuff?

North Pole Goes Wireless

North Pole Goes Wireless 04/15/2005 04:36 AM

The possible puns regarding this story are practically endless, though the Register does a good job of exploiting most of them: Two Intel employees set up a hotspot at a research camp at the North Pole. It uses Iridium phones for backhaul, which means the access is probably excruciatingly slow, but people at the North Pole probably aren't complaining. The deployment is purportedly meant to check out how the equipment fares in such cold, wet weather, though there are plenty of other such experiments that have been done for some time. Dave Hughes has done tons of work in Alaska with wireless networks and he was also instrumental in enabling the hotspot at Mt. Everest base camp in Nepal.

Intel Goes Wireless At North Pole 04/15/2005 09:59 AM

north_pole_kthx.jpgWhile not busy encouraging the destruction of the original 'Moore's Law' article, Intel's employees have installed a wireless hot spot near the North Pole. Built in the Arctic region at the Barneo ice camp, Intel Russia engineers installed an 802.11 b/g access point and established a connection with four of their laptops, 78 miles from the North Pole (using, of course, Centrino mobile technology to accomplish this feat). The hot spot has since been taken down, but survived the cold (-22°F or worse) and worked reliably. Of course, "Intel pointed to the experiment as an example of how mobile technology allows users to work anywhere," even if I can't get a signal in my own backyard.

Utility pole boxes as tourist maps

Utility pole boxes as tourist maps 07/26/2004 12:33 PM
Darren sez, "Victoria, Canada's City Engineering department has found an inventive use for those ubiquitous traffic control boxes you see on lamp and traffic light posts. In high pedestrian traffic areas, they've pasted neighbourhood maps on them. The maps wrap around three sides of the box, identifying areas of interest (as well as, interestingly, the city's URL).

"What a great idea. Not only do they use existing visual real estate (avoiding the need for other street-level maps), but it's a really cheap, low-tech solution to graffiti. As a guy who spent two sweltering summers across the street from the pictured box, at the busiest Tourism Information Centre in the country, I appreciate any non-human assistance for tourists." At the franchise in Herndon (Virginia), I have personally seen the line exit the store, cross the front of the building and circle around to the back (at 3pm). You might call it just a press release, but Indianapolis company wants to beat Hartford, Conn.: Wi-Fi network enabler Sputnik is working with an Indianapolis firm that appears slightly aggrieved that Hartford, Conn., has one-sixth the residents and more Wi-Fi hotspots. Their public (and public relations) goal? Boost Indianapolis from 48th in Intel's recent wireless cities survey up into the top 10. Austin's civic leaders and community networks have made similar statements about leveraging that city's wireless potential, and perhaps some civic boosterism can help grow Wi-Fi. In Austin, it's a mix of civic, commercial, and free community; this Indianapolis company appears focused on commercial with a little bit of free....

Olympic-Sized Arrogance

Olympic-Sized Arrogance 08/21/2004 02:40 PM
  • AP: Olympians largely barred from blogging. Athletes may be the center of attention at the Olympic Games, but don't expect to hear directly from them online -- or see snapshots or video they've taken.
  • This is about greed, nothing more and nothing less. It is about the historically corrupt International Olympic Committee's desire to please the giant media organizations to which it has sold "rights" to tell and show the world what is happening. The irony here is that the olympic officials are inadvertently telling us something about the future of journalism, though I'm certain they don't understand it themselves, in the context of their heavy-handed (and probably illegal) action. Because the more that regular folks -- OK, that's a stretch for the athletes -- put their own work on the Web or send it to each other by other means, the more they are becoming some of tomorrow's journalists. But the move is ridiculous. If an athlete phones a friend and reports what's happened, and the friend posts it online, is that somehow breaking the rules? Go further. Look past today's technology. What's coming will utterly wreck the Big Media monopoly over Olympic images, and all Big Event images. When all spectators have a high-quality video camera in their phones, will the powers-that-be ban phones? Unlikely. But even if they could ban phones that are obvious, what will they do when we're carrying video cameras in the buttons on our shirts, and when our eyeglasses contain phones or other transmitting devices? I hope athletes break this rule right and left. I also hope that they declare independence someday from the cynical and corrupt organizations that have run international sports for so long. The games are about the athletes, or should be. Also:
  • Larry Magid also finds it outrageous, but sees athletes' blogging "more like a letter home" than journalism. I'm not so sure I can draw the line anymore.
